In the year 2017, it is insulting that ryobi chose to use lead acid batteries instead of long lasting, safe, lithium phosphates(lifepo4).( 3 year life vs 10+ years.) I would have paid $800 more for lithium. Heck i even used lithium on my last ebike, why cant $ryobi$?
Asked by: Justin
This mower is intended for homeowners who may use it 20-40 times per year. If properly maintained (kept charged) the SLAs should last at least 5 years, possibly 8+. SLA are typically given ~300 cycles before no good. This lifespan fits really well for the mower. The lithium would have added a lot more to the price for essentially no benefit to the homeowner consumer. I run an all electric mowing business, and have been working with all types of batteries for years. I wish Ryobi would come out with a ~32" walk behind battery mower. That is the gap that needs filling now. I will have my eye out for a used one of these 38" tractors, perhaps with a neglected battery. With a good lithium battery it could have potential for me. Even just the mower deck I'd love to have. But at $2500, sure beats the $9-12,000 MeanGreens.

With nothing to synchronize the blades (separate motors) how do they overlap without hitting? Do they not overlap? If so, how does it not leave a seem of uncut grass down the middle of each pass?
Asked by: John
no mower has synchronized blades, gas mower's blades are ran from a v-belt, not a timing belt

Asked by: Lawnguy
Yes they do. I broke a wheel when I bumped into a cement block. Cement beat plastic. If you ever need parts, this is the email I received. Thank you for your purchase of a Ryobi lawn and garden product, and we are proud that you have chosen Ryobi for your lawn and garden needs. Ryobi lawn and garden product replacement parts and their pricing can be obtained through the Ryobi master parts distributor at, 1-877-545-4110. Hi, I bought my RM480e two weeks ago, used it twice and love it. However, the parking brake on my unit does not work. The brake itself works fine but not the parking handle. It probably needs an adjustment. Where are the instructions for adjusting the parking brake?
Asked by: Lloyd
You really have to fully depress the brake pedal then lift the parking lever. Its on a cable that goes to the rear brakes. There is a nut adjustment, but id be careful as tightening that too much will cause the brakes to rub and wear out.

I recommend this upgrade. Pros: I used it 3 times now for up to 2 hours straight each time on a non-flat acre, and it seems it could go 5+ hours before requiring a charge. It can be fast, it is definitely quiet with the blades off, mows in reverse, has a tight turning radius, feels good, fits in my 2-car garage with 2 large cars in it. Cons: These are details to me but to mention. The parking brake does not function (I use a wood block). At first, I could not mount the seat as described in the manual (I had to pull the seat back first). The mower was delivered on a metal crate sitting on top of a wood palette (ask the delivery person to offload from the palette too). The ride can be smoother (perhaps needs better damping, or the seat needs more comfort). The USB cover broke at the hinge (flimsy plastic).

The uncrating was about 60 mins and assembly 30 mins, It climbs hills with ease. It does pick up speed fast downhill. The overall cost per year is less than Gas including replacing the 4 deep cycle lead acid batteries after 5 to 7 years.( lithium batteries would be too expensive and the lead batteries add necessary weight to the machine).. There is a small design flaw. The Plastic grass deflector sticks out way to far. I broke mine backing up by a tree. The good news is Ryobi is sending me a free replacement. This says alot about a company supporting a new product !

I love not having to mess around with gas cans and filling awkward gas tanks any more. This thing is as fun to just run around on as it is to mow with! I was surprised how much I ended up appreciating the high-backed seat too. I do wish the accelerator pedal was a vertical pedal (more like in a car) as my foot slips up this one pretty easy. Still, not a big deal as once you get used to it you just adjust automatically. I have fun with this thing every time I take it out of the garage. It's got lots of power and a surprising amount of OOMPH!

It takes a bit of learning: cruise control is definitely the "gear" to use, as it will hold speed for you on the level or uphill. However, if you head downhill, and it starts coasting faster, it will keep speeding up unless you put your foot on the brake. That unsets the cruise, and you must use the accelerator pedal to resume speed. I have found I like to turn on the mower blades during backup as well. One problem I have had keeps me from giving it five stars: the lever to set mowing height is super-easy to knock out of its detent, and falls to a very short mowing height. I ended up making a small tapered wood block to keep it in the setting I want to use for mowing. The fact that it wants to be left plugged to the charger is good. I just mounted the charger to the wall of my barn where I park the mower. The mower uses lead-acid batteries, which keep the price competitive with the nicer gasoline mowers. I mow half an acre, and never see the charge meter go lower than three-fourths.

Great mower, but not perfect - that's the risk you take being an early adopter. I have owned this mower for two weeks, so far the performance has been excellent. This is the definitely the future of mowing. Gas is obsolete. Likes: After mowing my 3/4 acre lot the battery charge indicator still says "full". Time will tell how well the batteries hold up. 38" deck on this model gets my lawn done faster than my old 46 inch deck mower because it is faster and more maneuverable Dislikes: Is Home Depot trying to not sell these? They are not in stock at many stores near me, so I had to drive 45 minutes to see one in person, since I was outside of their delivery area, I had to rent a truck or buy online and have it shipped to my home- I chose the latter. Manual advises to avoid water at all costs (don't wash it, don't mow when wet). - Gas powered mowers have electrical systems too, electric golf carts get used on wet turf daily but don't come with the same warning, so what's the problem? As others have noted, the operation of the accelerator is terrible. There is a signficant lag between when you push the pedal and when the unit actually gets in motion, but then when you do get going, the acceleration is incredibly fast. It would be nice to have the forward - reverse operation feel smooth and linear like a hydrostatic transmission. Would be nice to have more add-on parts and accessories available. With a 4.8 kWh electrical system on board, there should be no limit to what powered accessories this could run. Another interesting tidbit: If you're concerned about buying a riding mower from a power tool company, don't be. Although it's a Ryobi, this mower is actually manufactured by Textron, the same company who owns EZ-Go golf carts, and several other companies that make heavy duty industrial and military vehicles.

I have been looking for an electric rider and found that there are only 2 currently on the market. The other brand only had an hour or 1 acre run time. I have approx. 2 acres that are grass to mow and this mower does it with no problem and my yard has several hills. I can cut it all on one charge with plenty of power left to spare. I look forward to cutting my grass. The best thing is our home is 100% solar and I can charge the mower and be carbon neutral. "It's not how well you mow fast, it's how well you mow carbon free."

No Exhaust. Tight Turns. Comfy Seat. Easy maintenance. Cleans up easy with my leaf blower. Battery has yet to drop even one bar on the 100Ah version, even after mowing for 1+ hours. Blades are easy to raise and lower. Daughter likes to mow because it looks like a go cart. Cruise Control. Cons: No Suspension, very heavy. Because all of the weight is on the rear tires, every bump is amplified. Not a deal breaker, but this mower can mow much faster than the bumps allow me to. Delayed start / Gas pedal takes some getting used to.

Product was easily to assemble and guidelines about safety and operation were excellent. The mower runs good, cuts good, and batteries lasted on our 1 acre lot with room to spare. The only problem we had was on the 2nd time using the mower the front tire got a puncture from a dried out weed. We were able to fix the tire with a tire patching kit. It would be nice if the tires were a little more durable. Also, mower steering wheel has started to squeak on turning the 2nd time we used it. Overall we would recommend this mower for its durability, strength and ease of operation.
