Questions & Answers

How long will the battery run on one charge?

For typical trimming and edging, how long with the battery last on one charge?
Asked by: Bobo
Thank you for asking, Bobo. Although these Ryobi 40 volt batteries are "gas-like", we do not have an exact measurement on how much of a run time this battery has. There are too many variables involved such as: what kind of tool you are using the battery with, what kind of material you are cutting, how thick the material is, if the material is wet or dry, etc. The charge time on the battery should take anywhere between 60-90 minutes. I hope this helps and we appreciate your interest in Ryobi! -Keri

Is this doable for a 5'2 woman?

I can't handle my husbands 2 cycle gas stihl trimmer, is this lighter?
Asked by: Kygal33
I am a woman and while I am taller than you are this weed eater is extremely light compared to other weed eaters making it much more comfortable to use.

the lever to change from trimmer to edger. The wheel does not allow the lever to come down far enough to change from wleeding to edger or visa versa

this is a Robi cordless
Asked by: Rayjohn
I had exactly the same problem with the 18 volt model, and I see others have too. Design wise the wheel gets in the way of reversing from edger to whacker. I called the service number and the gentleman said he has the same unit and that the wheel cannot be in the way of the lever reverse it back. (the 1st time I took the guard off and was able to release it). He instructed me to lay it in my lap and pull the wheel over, push the lever and rotate the head. It did work but I don't think it was meant to be used that way; getting a lap full of grass! Maybe after I rotate it a few times it will be easier but when he said the wheel must be out of the way that points to a design error. Going to try it again to see if its easier, but it is definitely a problem; Other then that the 18 and I suspect the 40 volt model work great

Where do you get the Connexion attachments

As far as I can tell, Home Depot doesn't sell them. So where do you find them?
Asked by: MS
If you can't find any of the CONNEXION attachments at your local Home Depot, check www.homedepot.com.

40-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer/Edger - 2.6 Ah Battery and Charger Included is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1449.

Ryobi 40v Trimmer/Edger - With 2.6Ah Battery and Charger This Trimmer/Edger was my introduction to Ryobi 40v yard tools, back in Summer 2012. After a few uses, I was a true believer. I like that one tools easily converts between Trimmer and Edger. It has a variable speed trigger, but I only squeeze it to full-speed about 40% of the time. After 5 years, this tool and its charger still work fine. This original Battery still holds a good charge, with long life and high power to the end. The trimmer works fine, and just as good as my old heavy gas one on basic grasses (even St. Augustine and it's runners). No more mixing oil and gas. I like that it self-feeds without bumping on the ground (it does it when it slows-down to very low RPMs). You can buy pre-wound line cartridges, or wind your own. No more hauling-out the old large 3HP gas solid-blade edger. I ended up giving-away my old Edger to my brother so no more storage space or gas-engine maintenance and repairs to worry around. Cuts a nice clean groove and is easy to control. I think Nylon-line life is good (even when Edging). A tip for longer line-life is to try to avoid heavy contact with concrete (light contact can't be avoided and it not a problem). Trimming and Edging is much less of a hassle now-days (you just pickup tool, snap in battery, and go to work). I like that they all use the same batteries, so you don't have to buy a battery each time (saving money). However, if you want more batteries ... I think it's a little cheaper to buy the version of your next tool that has one included. So far, (in 2017) I currently have 2 batteries that I rotate between 3 different Ryobi 40v yard-tools.

The product in general operates acceptably. The replacement line replacement packages are ridiculously overpriced. Self winding from bulk line is a much more economical way to replace your line. Also, the self feed mechanism does not self feed very often as I've experienced. As of 2017, the battery charger has died. The warranty coverage so prominently displayed by Home Depot and Ryobi is worthless and extremely difficult to get a productive response from Ryobi. The Ryobi rep would not honor the 3 year warranty based off of the serial number, and wouldn't consider the original purchase receipt. Also, the warranty is misleading, the 5 years DOES NOT COVER the battery or charger! I won't be buying any more of Home Depot's Ryobi products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good Trimmer, Horrible Battery Life I bought this trimmer last spring after my previous trimmer's 18V battery wouldn't hold a charge - after owning it for many years. I researched and read a lot of positive website reviews and user feedback regarding ease it's of use, power, and versatility when compared to gas powered trimmers. And the fact that the battery would power a whole line of 40V tools was a bonus. But the battery that came with my unit is already flashing as defective on the charger! What's the point of a 40V interchangeable system if the battery itself proves to be inadequate; quite a disappointment!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great trimmer when it worked The trimmer worked great until the battery died. I used the trimmer 3 times and the battery would not charge anymore (Less than 30 days). Went through the warrenty department at Ryobi and have been waiting about a month for a replacement battery. Latestest update was they're back ordered until October 28th (ordered a replacement August 8). They apparently have been back ordered from when I originally ordered the replacement, I was just not notified. Now this trimmer is a paper weight until next summer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best yard tool investment ever I have been using this model for about 5 years now. I feel that I beat the heck out of this trimmer Esspessially in the spring when trimming out all my munched beds. This trimmer just digs in and takes whatever I have thrown at it. The auto string feed is just perfect an I could not be happier with how long it goes on one charge. I had to replace the battery once in 5 years so no complaint about that!! The rest of the 40 volt equipment is just as good in my opinion Ryobi hit it out of the park with this line. This unit I just bought was a gift as I still don't need a replacement yet. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works good so far The string doesn't seem overly tough it breaks easy on stone or fence. However cuts well, struggles a little in the thick stuff. But for general yard use it works great. It's a bit heavier than I expected as it looks light, though it is lighter than my gas one. No more fuel to mix, doing my whole yard 75x110 lot so not small took less than half a charge, so it lasts a while. Just be cautious when lifting fully off throttle as it auto feeds and you will cut the excess string off wasting it. So stay on the throttle just a little bit between cuts to not waste thread. For the average house user I think it's a great trimmer. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

The idea of a cordless trimmer/edger is very practical and this trimmer comes close to meeting most requirements. It holds a charge well, it is easy to operate, it is light yet powerful. Where it fails miserably is in the trimming line and the feed mechanism. The line breaks too easily and the mechanism hangs up constantly. The trimmer has to be upended and the line has to be manually drawn from the reel. Frequently the line will shear off at the reel opening. This necessitates opening the reel, releasing some line, threading it, then reassembling the reel. Last week the handle broke off in my hand. Now I have to source this part or get used to using the trimmer without it.
