Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tool for small projects I used this to countersink 12 holes in 1/8 cold rolled steel. Worked ok with WD40 but way better with air tool oil which is thicker and stays put. Used a small drill press and it would vibrate/whine/chatter if you went too quick. Use air tool oil and go slow and you could do 100 holes im sure. Way worth the price and its in stock.

This bit did a decent job with countersinks, but it's not for applications that require a high degree of accuracy. Running it in a cordless drill, I found it wandered quite far off center the deeper I got. This was mitigated somewhat by drilling a wide diameter pilot hole, but there was still some degree of "wander". The only time I'd use this in the future is in a drill press. A closer inspection of the bit shows a dull point and uneven grinds on the cutting edges. I'm pretty sure this is contributing to the bit's tendency to move off center during drilling. I tried both hard and soft woods with the same result. The good news is I didn't experience any chattering while using it. Overall, I'd try a different HSS bit, since this one is a little more expensive than other comparable bits that come with a more consistent grind.

That is all basically true. It works better with a drill than an impact driver. Using an impact driver results in a less smooth bevel, because of the start and stop cutting nature of the impact driver. This also work better on hard woods then soft woods. The cutting edges are not razor sharp. On plastics if works good/okay on plastics that are not brittle or rubbery. It's good on PVC and abs. It also does well on glass-reinforced plastics as they are generally stiffer and not brittle. On metals it does good one most metals non-ferrous or metals that have not been hardened. Aluminums and brasses are fine, cold and hot rolled steel is good too. Harder bronzes and steels and stainless steels its not to good on. Metals that are difficult to machine because they are considered sticky don't work to well either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Did the job well the counter sink did what it was manufactured to do -- easy to use, produced clean accurate countersinks in a wood flooring transition. I've only done three countersinks with the tool at this point, but would rate it excellent.

I tried this out on mild steel, aluminum, pvc, oak and pine. I have several countersink bits that are now junk and always were, really. Oh, they are also in the trash after getting this Ryobi "universal" countersink bit. I like to sink my screw heads down in wood without splinters popping up. Sometimes I've used drill bits, but they often bite into the wood too fast to control and are the wrong angle. I got to get another of these well made high speed tool steel Ryobi countersinks and it seems the 5/8" dia may be a good general size.
