After using this for 5 minutes, it started to smoke. I wouldn't think you can do much of anything with this "hammer" drill.

Yes; depending on how large a hole you want you may want to start a small pilot hole for your larger bit.

Your previous question intimated that you were going to buy a converter. Ask the converter merchant, that person should know, both the tool and the electric supply.

This hammer drill made it infinitely easier to drill cinder block than any rotary drill. Save your joints. If you need to drill into masonry, or its siblings, use a hammer drill and a carbide hammer drill bit, it makes a world of difference. And if you want to save your money, this is a great value for the price.

Couldn't run hammer drill for more than 5-10 seconds before it would vibrate Chuck open and bit falls out. After putting bit back in chuck approx. 25 times, I boxed it back up and returned it.

Used proper bit and wet the surface. Drill lasted for about 5 holes before the handle fell off. Stripped around the splines in the neck near the chuck.

I purchased this drill to install concrete anchors for railing posts. The drill's guidelines state that it can drill up to 5/8"diameter into concrete - this is untrue. The drill bit I used was 3/8", and the drill was able to penetrate about 2", and then the drill bit became stuck. The bits I am using are new and high quality. The drill did not have enough power to drill to the 4" depth needed or to remove the bit from the concrete. What an incredible waste of time.

I had a project to install lights to concrete pillars with concrete screws. My regular drill would not drill in the concrete and the bit would get stuck in the concrete. So I went to Home Depot and bought this hammer drill by Ryobi. Well I will tell you it drilled that concrete like it was butter. I finished drilling holes for 6 lamps in a couple of hours. It would have taken me days with my old drill. The hammer capability is amazing, and I love the reverse.I would highly recommend this drill for those tough concrete jobs.

Invest $30 more for a quality hammer drill, even if it's only for occasional use or if you're a DIY'er. I had to drill 5/16" holes in concrete 2 1/2" deep. This drill just would not drill them. I struggled and struggled with it. I even went back to HD and bought an $8 SDS bit. It still would not drill them more than about 1" deep. I took it back and bought a DeWalt hammer drill for $89. The DeWalt drilled each hole in less than a minute. I think Ryobi makes fairly good, inexpensive tools. I have a few that work well. In this case, invest a little more $ in a hammer drill that will do the job.

After struggling to drill three 1/2" holes in a concrete driveway and blunting a brand new drill bit, I broke down and bought a Ryobi Hammer drill and a new drill bit. I was amazed at how much easier the new drill bit cut through the concrete with the hammer mode. I quickly drilled another five holes with no problem and the drill bit was still in good shape. The Ryobi drill is a good balanced weight that made it easy to handle. The handle fits well and helps you control the drill. Given the price, I could kick myself for not getting a hammer drill earlier.
