Questions & Answers

Would this work as better alternative to sanding rough cut oak to get a smooth surface

Asked by: Cdhover
It could depending on how wide the board is. I would plan on still sanding the board after using this as it will not leave the smoothest finish or if you don't keep it level. Cut with the grain to reduce tearing of the wood surface.

If I clamp two boards 1 1/2 wide (3") total on top of each other, (96") long and plane the 3" edges will the plane work well enough to then mate the boards side to side with no gaps?
Asked by: Scott
It will if you are very careful; however, it would make more sense to plane those boards individually, maybe even use the edge guide to get them nice and straight and square. Planing them side by side can create a "gap" when you put the two planed edges together if you gouge (over plane) the wood in any one spot.

6 Amp 3-1/4 in. Corded Hand Planer is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 114.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Close to junk First off..... I have a RYOBI only garage. Everything from drills to impacts, sanders. Literally everything in my garage is RYOBI. So this isn’t a bashing session at all. It is a let down. Used this 3 times to take material off faster before using my hand smoothing plane. It now leaves MASSIVE grooves in the wood that I have to sand down. Then use my smoothing plane. The blade has chipped so much it doesn’t even work after I switch the blades around.

We discovered our back door was not installed properly when it started coming out of the wall every time we opened it. Much to our surprise it was not connected to anything on one side. There was no 2X4 on that side. Whatever made the person that installed it think that would make for a stable entry I have no idea. We decided to tackle the project ourselves. My husband was very overwhelmed when the 2x4 we were adding was too thick to work. I ran to The Home Depot in our area and picked up this electric planer. According to my husband it worked great and was very easy to use. I could have paid twice as much for another brand but chose the less expensive product. I'm glad I did. We saved hundreds by doing it ourselves, and have a good tool for future projects. Having the right tool makes all the difference.

It saves hours of manual chiseling when there is the slightest issue of uneven (down to 1/8") in plywood floors. I am so glad we bought this. I can see how it can be useful in many DIY jobs. Its a bit loud.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from solid planer I’ve hit live edge oak, maple, alder, and cedar with this tool and it does a great job. The varible adjustments are a nice touch and the cartying case makes a great lunch bag. I was able to get to work the minute I pulled it from the box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inexpensive, and performs well! I find myself needing a planer about once every 2 years or so. Considering the very occasional need for this tool, I decided to go with the Ryobi rather than a more expensive brand. I used it on solid red oak and it worked wonderfully!

Only thing to complain about is that the item was apparently a retuned item that had been used already when I bought it off the shelf.

Having never used a power hand planer before, I found the Ryobi hand planer easy to figure out and use. The key for me was to practice on some scrap wood first, take my time and let the tool do the work. Great product!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hmmm The cutting blade is not parallel with the sole of the planer. I tried to see if I could adjust it, but don't see a way. Makes for more work. It does have plenty of power though
