Would this work as better alternative to sanding rough cut oak to get a smooth surface

Asked by: Cdhover
It could depending on how wide the board is. I would plan on still sanding the board after using this as it will not leave the smoothest finish or if you don't keep it level. Cut with the grain to reduce tearing of the wood surface.

I bought this to hopefully cut down the time of stripping a 6inx6in beam because my belt sanders wasn't doing the trick. This planer worked wonderfully. I had to make two passes to account for the blade length but overall it definitely made a difference. I rated a 4/5 because the "dust" port often gets clogged with the bag on. After emptying after each pass, I ended up switching to a respirator and no bag. This machine allows you to choose which side the material is extracted. Overall, I would recommend highly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a trooper Bought this because I'm building a deck. Needed it first to level out some joists that were standing taller than others. Worked great for that, even when I ran it over some small finish nails I'd been using to hold string. It continued to work great for evening out ends of joists, bevelling corners, easing edges. I'm surprised how much I've used it so far, and it hasn't complained. Chewed through 3 inch wide sections of composite deck board at the full 1/8" depth of cut with little complaint. Only issue is the chip ejection port can clog up if you are taking off too much material and/or feeding too fast. Pulling the planer off the work piece and flipping the little ejection gate back and forth a couple times fixes that easily. It's really nice to be able to divert chips to either side of the tool too. Overall, this thing has handled a lot already, including being thrown all over the place during the construction project, and has done everything without issue. Solid purchase.

Figure i can put some glue on it if it cracks more. Don't feel like returning it because needed it immediately and I had bought last one in stock at the store. The good thing is it reminded me to never never to drop it. If it lands on the housing suspect the housing will probably shatter. So be warned!... Using it to shave sides of 2 x6 boards to make farm table top. The guide isn't of much so I took it off. Works ok, just wonder how long the blade will last. I'm using it on pine, suspect the blade will have a much shorter life on hardwoods.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't last a day Got this to plane some 2x3's for a kitchen project. I guess you can't ask for much for this price, but the first problem was that it didn't plane straight. The cut was not parallel to the guide surface, so as you took cuts it would get progressively more and more off. This might have been fixable by adjusting the blade, but before we got around to it, it basically stopped cutting. The blade was completely dull, as in you could look at it and see how round the edge was. This was after a few hours of planing. Wood, without a single nail. Ended up returning it. Maybe it would be a useful tool if all you needed to do was a few cuts per year, but I'd save my money for something better quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ryobi Hand Planer Great tool for a homeowner who needs a reasonably priced hand planer in their tool collection for occasional use. It cost about half the price of planers designed for regular use by professional carpenters. It got the job done for me and was a real time saver.

This planer a actually pretty nice as it offers a bit more for the money than the others at the store. It's built heavy duty, and comes with a soft case, rabbit guide and a dust bag. I really like how you can switch the dust to come out on either side (very innovative) This also has the automatic kickstand so you don't mess up your wood when setting it down and a built in wrench to change the blades with. The one thing I can say is that it's a bit heavy at over 9lbs, and somewhat bulky, but the knives cut like butter, and does a great job cleaning off and smooting out wood.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good planer I bought this planer after my Makita called it quits after years of hard use and straight edging homes. I no longer do any straight edging and didn't want to spend a lot so took a gamble on this unit since it was the first Ryobi power tool I have ever considered buying. It's pretty solid and does clean work if blades are kept sharp. The shavings collector works ok. Only little complaint is the kickstand thing can kind of be annoying and in the way at times but useful enough not to break it off. Overall, was worth the gamble and have been pleased with it.
