older expand-it

I have an older ryobi expand-it that I can't get running. wondering if buying just the motor head if it will fit my attachments I already own? I currently have model ry-28025
Asked by: mike
Not sure about your model but I was in the same spot as you earlier this year and wondered the same thing. I had a older one {a 30cc} and yes the new one connects to all my attachments just fine. I can tell the difference in the 30cc and the 25cc which I bought, as far as the power goes but is does the job.

Does this 2 cycle have the power to to run a cultivator or would a 4 cycle be better for a cultivator?
Asked by: MrLazy
I have had mine for 4 years & had no issues... I run the string trimmer & the edger. I have started using the gasoline treatment though. I had a blower that ran fine for 2 years & then nothing... Still under warranty but HD wouldn't honor it b/c they said I left gas in it, which I didn't. My spark plug wire has broken & I'm thinking for 79 I will just get a new one instead of repairing it... The other problem I had was with the backpack blower. Great machine but the tubes wouldn't stay on. Had great power but I switched to Echo.

Is it durable?

Asked by: Cesar
NO. First one lasted about 1.5 years before becoming completely unreliable - problem was in wouldn't start. Second one lasted around 8 months and then wouldn't start. Warranty is a joke.

Expand-it 25 cc 2-Cycle Full Crank Gas Power Head is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 1103.

It seems smaller (cc-wise) than the earlier versions, and I have had 3 or 4 of these in the past. I still like it, but I am concerned it doesn't have the horsepower to drive the heavier attachments (chainsaw, edger, brush trimmer). These things bog the system down pretty easily and I need something that can power its way through the tough stuff. I am concerned I might put too much demand on it and burn it out;. Do you offer a larger "cc" version? Other than that, it seems quieter ( a little) than the older models, but runs good as a weed-eater, which is what I primarily use it for. Really have to baby it for the edger to work. Lots of back and forth to get it to cut to full depth. - Thanks for listening. By the way, most of the power tools I buy now are Ryobi as well. Good products for the price. I don't require commercial grade so they work great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good tool I have been buying these for the last 10 years. The main thing that goes wrong is the carburator. But maybe if you use marine gas it might hold up better. They always go out when the warranty runs out. I keep buying them because I have a lot of attachments. One thing I like can use it for alot of things. Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst piece of equipment I have owned Since the first day I bought one 3 years ago it had been hard to start, following the proper procedure listed, I often had to attempt to start it so many times my arm was tired from pulling the cord before i could actually use it. It has always idled very rough and it would frequently cut out during use. just recently while using it, it stalled for the last time. I am able to get it to idle on full choke for a while and I can even give it some gas while on full choke, but once it goes to half choke or full on, it slowly dies out and as soon as I give it any gas it promptly bogs and shuts off immediately. I have always been using a 50:1 mix with ethanol shield oil. I believe the carburetor was likely defective from day one. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great with other attachments I bought this power head to replace a Craftsman weedwhacker while being able to use all the attachments that I have. So far, I've used it with a regular straight trimmer and a Ryobi edger attachments. So far I'm pleased with my purchase: It's super light, and the engine starts up on the 4th or 5th pull. My wife likes it because she can hold it and start it without any assistance. Keep in mind that this is a fairly small engine compared to most weedwhackers. It revs up pretty nicely but doesn't have a lot of torque. It will get most household jobs done, but may struggle with heavy duty jobs like cutting through thick overgrown grass. Overall, it's an excellent purchase. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

The first on lasted about 1.5 years and then refused to start no matter what I did (fresh gas/oil mixture, clean spark plug, clean carburetor, have it serviced, etc). The second one lasted about 8 months before it stopped starting reliably. Went through the same procedure as above when it absolutely refused to start - ever. Still nothing. Called Ryobi warranty and was told to bring it to a Home Depot to see whether there was a warranty issue. They said that the spark plug was dirty and supposedly they cleaned it and it started right up. (I had just cleaned the spark plug - so I don't think so). Brought it home and it didn't start and has not started since (two weeks). Called Ryobi warranty again and they said I had to bring it to a service center about 30 miles away for a second opinion. Each time you are charged at least $20-25 - which is not refunded if they don't take a warranty claim. A new one is $79. I didn't go to the service center because they alerted me that it probably would not be covered. Won't be buying another - Ryobi does not honor their warranty but gives you the runaround. Note that I had tiller, weed-eater, edger, hedge trimmer and chain saw attachments. Used the trimmer each week, the other items once in a while. Very disappointing. Ryobi has lost my business.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost a 5 The engine starts easily and the 2cyc engine is much better than the 4cyc I had previously. Two minor issues: 1. the clamp that holds the attachments on the shaft was welded slightly off center, although the attachments seem to hold okay. 2. When registering the product on the Ryobi website it required a "Model Number" and showed a picture of the SN plate. However, this product does not have that SN plate pictured and no where on the the engine are the words, "MODEL NUMBER". It has Item number, Serial Number and Manufacturers number, so the registration screen wouldn't finish. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light, Quiet, and easy to use I recently purchased this Ryobi Power Head (to replace my Craftsman 4-cycle unit) on a recommendation from a local repair shop (the repair shop owner told me that it is more cost effective to purchase a cheap unit like this, use it for 3-5 years, throw it away if/when it breaks after the warrantee is up, and purchase a new one) (I completely agree). The Ryobi is expected to last as long as the Craftsman did at less than half the cost. The Ryobi is lighter and quieter than the Craftsman as well. The manufacturer's warrantee on the Ryobi is 3 years, and the home depot extended warrantee (which only costs $12.00) brings the warrantee period up to a total of 5 years. So, I am almost guaranteed to get 5 years out of this product. I gave it four out of five stars because the unit seems to rest on my right forearm while I am using it. It gets a little warm (not warm enough to burn me, but still slightly uncomfortable) against my arm. I will attempt to change my holding position over time to eliminate this minor discomfort. I will also have to use the unit with more attachments. 25 ccs is not very powerful (I can tell a difference even using the string trimmer) from my old 29 cc 4 cycle unit. I hope that it is powerful enough to use my pole saw and cultivator. Overall a very good product for a great price. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than ever! I have had previous models and they did work great and for a very long time 6+ years. There are two features about the new model that I find exceptional. The first is that it will sit straight up on the floor which allows the changing of different attachments to be much easier. The gas switch/throttle is much more responsive than previous models...not that they were bad...this one is just more responsive to the amount of power I need at any given time. These factors plus all of the attachments make this the most valuable and most tool in my garage! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
