Questions & Answers

Can you run this hybrid unit OK without a battery, just plug it in?

I have a long cord and have no problem using that, rather than recharging batteries all the time that eventually go kaput, and then you have to figure out how to dispose of them. So I'd like to buy it if it will run plugged in, and not even purchase the battery and charger, as it comes separately and I don't want it.
Asked by: WestTexas
Yes, this can be run only with electric - that is why it is called a hybrid.

Ca I use an 18v battery from my Ryobi drill?
Asked by: Karuna
Yes, as long as it is a 18V ONE+ battery. The lithium batteries run longer in this trimmer, however.

Can I respool the line myself or do I have to buy spools ech time I need one?

Asked by: foleyp
You can re-spool the line using either 0.065 or 0.080 line. 0.080 line will last longer, and the commercial rated lines available online or the star cross section line will last longer than the round line. Either way, do yourself a favor and make sure the line color is green, otherwise the blue string looks way out of place on your lawn.

Do you have to buy a new spools of line for this or can you respool the old one?

Asked by: Burgh6lt
Both are options, I have a few extra spools so I do not have to respool immediately.

ONE+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Hybrid Electric Cordless String Trimmer/Edger - Battery and Charger Not Included is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 276.

One of the reasons I bought it was because of the 3 year warranty. Unfortunately, there is now a problem with the feed spool but Home Depot cannot tell me whether a repair is under warranty unless I pay a $20 diagnostic charge but if you have them diagnose it then you also must agree to allow them to do any repair up to $100 without further authorization. Since the unit costs only 60 this is fairly ludicrous. The edger has worked fairly well except that the original battery died after 2 summers but if you are thinking of purchasing this item from Home Depot and the warranty is a factor in your decision then don't do it. Home Depot, while normally good in most areas, really sucks in regards to supporting the products that they sell under warranty.

After I switched the power this trimmer burned out in 10 minutes. The string advance mechanism continually failed to feed line. If you have too much line out when unjamming it, the line wraps itself under the spool housing.

The self lengthing line system lengthens the line every time you take your finger off the trigger. Ryobi used to make good products but it doesn't seem to care so much now.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Initial review "First Time Use" After first time use. Positives: Versatile from trimmer to edger. Not to heavy. No issues with battery life. I do have a smaller yard though. Trim and edges well with the battery. I have not tried it with power cord. Negative: the feed of line every time you take your finger off the trigger. Wastes battery life and line. If I did not have a small yard I would probably not purchased the product simply for that very reason. I would only recommend for a smaller yard and practice running without taking your finger off the trigger and hope the battery lasts. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Double The Option I bought this about a little over a month ago and I am so happy that I did. The option to use a 18V One+ battery or plug it into an outlet via an extension cord is outstanding. I don't have to worry about having an extra long cord if I veer off into a far distance or if I go up my hill in my backyard. I could easily unplug the cord and attach the battery and I am free to roam about the premises. The Hybrid String Trimmer will go through a 18V battery fairly quickly though. But I have two batteries so it isn't much of a problem for me. This trimmer is more than it is cut out to be and it is a valuable addition to my Ryobi tools collection. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for what it is. This tool is not for heavy bush whacking. But it is a good tool for general trimming around the yard. The auto-feeder works fine if you use it properly. You can't oscillate the throttle as you trim. You just throttle up and trim until the string starts to wear down then release the throttle wait for it to slow, depress the throttle and continue trimming. My batteries (4ah) has plenty of run time for my purposes. Also, a spare battery or two is good to have especially if you intend to have more ONE+ tools. Rated 3 out of 5 by from I like that I don't need an extension cord! I bought this at the end of April this year. I like the lightness of it, and not having to drag an extension cord. However, the battery runs out after about 15-20 minutes. I'm not sure if this is normal, so I borrowed a friend's who bought his a few years ago. I used his battery in my trimmer. I got about the same battery life (15-20 Minutes). I run it continuously through 4"-6" grass. At this point, I'm not sure if this is normal battery life. Should I just return it? Thanks! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent solution I bought the trimmer because it was light enough for me to handle although we also have a gas powered John Deere trimmer that was too heavy. I love this trimmer because I can handle it, it can run in two different positions - flat to trim and sideways to edge. The battery runs for about 15 minutes but we also bought the blower and I can use that battery on the trimmer and it last 1 hour which takes care of my whole trimming needs [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
