Will the Stud Detector find studs under lathe and plaster walls? Most of the older stud finders I have used in the past couldn't identify the stud under the lathes. Will this Whole Stud Detector be able to identify the studs behind the lathes?
Asked by: Jerome
I didn't have much luck at all. I have a textured plaster wall though too, which makes it even more difficult. It may work for you, or it may work if you are willing to search and verify several times for long periods of time. I can find a stud better and faster than that just tapping on the wall. It did find unshielded A/C lines accurately though.

Can this be used to find floor joist through carpet?

Asked by: Redinator
Yes you can. Since I have purchased the stud finder I don’t have to find things the old way my father showed me. Knocking on walls with your knuckles or tapped mg lightly with a hammer. Now I don’t have extra mistakes to fix. Sorry I’m not able to send a snap shot of the project.

will this unit locate studs behind bathroom ceramic tiles?
Asked by: Ray
Sorry i took so long to get back to you. It will detect electrical but the stud finding is suspect. I would not want to stake my life or reputation on its ability to see through ceramic.

I should have researched better I suppose, but I have old lathe and textured plaster walls, and some sand paper like textured drywall layered over plaster (?, can't tell for sure), so this stud finder doesn't work well at all for me. It did correctly locate A/C lines behind the walls though, and I was able to correctly located a couple of studs in some spots, but it's way too hit or miss, depending on too many factors. I haven't tried yet, but it may be useful to find the stud 'centers' after first locating the stud location with a magnetic stud finder, or by some other means. I looked at other stud finders too, and the marketing material for most aren't very clear or upfront about what kind of surfaces they are likely to work on or not. They should really all say in bold, right up front, "stud finder for DRYWALL (or similar flat surfaces, likely won't be reliable on other surfaces)". I mean, if you already have one, it doesn't hurt to try it other places, but I wouldn't suggest buying most of these things for a lathe and plaster wall, or anything textured. Magnetic finders would probably work better.

Wildly inaccurate and inconsistent in stud finding through ordinary drywall. Have tried to use it for several months. A waste of time and money. HomeDepot should remove it from their stores. HD has many very good stud finders but this is not one of them. So that you might believe this review and not think it is a plant from another company, I will not name the accurate stud finders I use.
