Will the Stud Detector find studs under lathe and plaster walls? Most of the older stud finders I have used in the past couldn't identify the stud under the lathes. Will this Whole Stud Detector be able to identify the studs behind the lathes?
Asked by: Jerome
Yes! I have plaster walls and it accurately found the studs. The key is to calibrate it on a section of wall where there is no stud. The low ratings on here are user error!

Sorry i took so long to get back to you. It will detect electrical but the stud finding is suspect. I would not want to stake my life or reputation on its ability to see through ceramic.

You can't put your fingers above the little gray rectangular lights or you'll get a false positive. It's very difficult to hold one handed as a result. It's also very slow, requiring several seconds to "boot up" and zero out before each measurement is taken. It was highly inaccurate, leading to many false positives. I had to measure twenty to thirty times just to be sure, and I'd get different readings fully fifty percent of the time. Once you hit an AC wire, you have to stop and recalibrate. Sorry, but something that slow and requiring two hands is just not as useful as some of the other products I've used. Would not recommend and would have returned had I not thrown away the package. Junk. I own a lot of Ryobi tools, I mean a lot. This is the worst I've ever used.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Inconsistent, terrible You might as well tap and listen with a hammer. I can't tell you how many times I've drilled or cut into a stud when looking for open space and vice versa. The best way to use this is for a door stop. Though it does seem ok at detecting electrical current. But would I trust it? No way. Worse than a waste of money. A waste of time that causes damage and costs time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from they made me rate it one star- deserves NONE! I would not recommend this at all. Bought and had it stored for About two months before my first use. It worked (I think) first time I used it but now all I get is a couple beeps and continuous flashing array of all the lights. Ryobi Service day was useless (don’t bother). Lesson learned... Ryobi you are dead to me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is terrible This is so inaccurate. I put a bunch of holes into my walls. After the fifth hole I stopped. And I returned it. This is terribly ridiculous. You have a better chance finding a stud by tapping then to find it with this thing. Just Horrible! Don’t buy it.

I have used this on plaster, drywall and sheetrock with the same perfect results. I love that it shows you the center stud location with the bright led lights, and the location marked in the back that comes out when you hut the button is awesome. It only takes one AAA battery, which actually last a long time, and the lights are nice and bright. I did remove a star because it is a bit bulky, and you will need both hands to operate this. I also think that the metal/electrical alert light is a bit too sensitive. Other than that the stud finder works great and even found studs on a popcorn ceiling for me. I recommend!

I've used it a couple of times now and it has accurately found the stud. Being able to identify the edges and center of the stud is something this tool seems to do well. The one feature I do not like is having to hold the 2 buttons while you move the sensor along the wall. This makes it a 2 handed operation which can be awkward as you are going along. And it doesn't always let me 'continue' to find the next stud without releasing the buttons and restarting the sensor. I also found the 'marker to be rather useless - marking a dimple that is impossible to see on a textured wall. But for the price the sensor works well.
