How much paver base do i need ?

Asked by Cuau September 4, 2020

Answer

For a traditional base prep you want to have a 4” base and 1” sand. For this you will need 211 base of base. Compact 2” of base at a time. For an easier way with less digging and a faster way to prepare you base, you can also use PaverBase panels. Each 5 sq ft panel give you a 4” base, 8” thermo barrier and proper drainage, along with the slope, fabric and sand. You would need need 52 PaverBase panels, and only need 1/2” sand. You project will be the paving stone thickness plus 1” (.68 panel and 1/2” sand (approx. 1/4” when compacted)

Good product if like me, you do not need a whole lot of gravel. I bought as a base for a small retaining wall that I am rebuilding. Twelve, 40 lb. bags got the job done and was just the right amount. I am pretty well pleased with how my base turned out. If I needed small amounts of gravel in the future, I would purchase this product again.

I probably shouldn't be rating this Paver Base because we're NOT using it for it's intended purpose. We built a berm to sit our Budha fountain atop and wanted it to look like river rock (paver base). Once that was completed we added turquoise "go-in-the-dark" pebbles (yes, they actually worked) to look like water flowing out of the fountain into the water pond below. Thanks to the paver base, it all turned out exactly as planned. Now we're going to add white rock (from Home Depot) around the water pond below and do a few more final touches (feathery plantings, etc.)
