Questions & Answers

How long does Cold Patch take to harden?

I used cold patch to cover an area 2' x 20'. In hindsight, I probably should have used hot asphalt to save $. I used a tamper and water filled roller to compact it. I have it down 2 days now and it's still somewhat loose. How long does it take to harden?
Asked by: Jack
I patched a hole 2' x 2' that was about 4" deep. That was 2 months ago. Even with lots of daily traffic it has yet to harden. It appears it never will.

Asked by: Wayne
No, there is no recommended temperature for its use. However, you would not want any snow, frost, and or ice in the hole during application.

Can it be used over dirt or gravel in a driveway where a pipe was trenches in?

Asked by: Deb
Not recommended- this is a product made for patching holes and cracks in existing asphalt. It needs a hard base and needs to be compacted very well to stay intact.

Where can I get it?

Your web-page says this product is not available in my local north Raleigh, NC store or any other Home Depot within a hundred miles. I think a few bags of either Quikrete or Sakrete cold blacktop repair would do the job for me. The price (around $12 or $14 per 50# bag) sounds reasonable but I don't want to spend a fortune having it shipped in from afar. Why isn't it stocked here? Can you order me some for store pickup without a shipping charge?
Asked by: Yampaw
Thank you for your recent inquiry with The Home Depot. Unfortunately, this item is not available within a 100 mile radius. Please visit or call your local home depot store to confirm special ordering options. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future. Thank you for shopping Home Depot.

50 lb. U.S. Cold Patch Pothole Repair is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A superb product I've put down over 150 bags on our private road, everything from potholes to worn out areas. Here's how I do it: sweep out the worn area or clean the pothole of loose rock and gravel. Pour the patch onto the area. Using a metal bow rake, smooth it out and tap it to get any lumps out and make it even in height. Feather the edges well by tapping with the rake. For potholes, extend it out a bit beyond the edge of the hole and leave it a little higher in the center. Then, drive back and forth over it slowly a few times with the left front and rear tire. Roll your window down and stick your head out the window to see where you're rolling. I recommend ordinary passenger tires, not knobby truck tires. Holds up perfectly. The bags remain soft in any temperature, so there's no need to pre-warm them, even in the winter. Can't say enough good things about this product. It's a real blessing. I'll be using it as long as I'm alive.

The product description sounded good but unfortunately it doesn’t stay together and just crumbled apart. I used another brand a week before from a competitor and worked perfectly for the same price. I’ll make the 25 mile drive next time and get a quality product..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Consistent With Product Description Have been using "do it yourself" driveway maintenance products for nearly 30 years. My job required 12 sacks (50 lb. wt.) of U.S. Cold Patch. Use this one according to directions: clean the receiving surface, open the plastic bag, spread well with the flat side of a bow rake (feathering out the edges), I started the compaction with a hand held plate tamper (watch out for material sticking to the plate surface, clean by scraping with the flat side of the bow rake), I rolled over the asphalt with the driver side front tire of my SUV 1-2 times with a helper guiding me from curbside. For you asphalt paving aficionados, you can refine your job by fine feathering the edges with Latexite Trowel Patch and sealing the whole job (I would wait at least 1 month) with a quality driverway sealer. Hope this was helpful.

I bought three bags at Home Depot, filled driveway holes, drove over it to tamp down, and have been driving over it for three weeks, and the stuff just comes loose like gravel. Still tracking gravel pieces into my house. Fills the hole, but everyday it is loose and spreads gravel all over driveway. I would not recommend this product and am seriously debating removal or trying to surface over it with another product or sealant. The stuff will not bind. We have been having 70-80 degree weather and no rain. It does not meet any expectation and now has created more work for me to fix it. Home Depot should ask why it is carrying this stuff on its shelf.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well This stuff works great for me. I've had to make numerous smaller patches and cracks of 1-inch size in asphalt. I clean them thoroughly and tamp the material in well until it's just above level, then use the flat side of a sledge to compact it. This has worked well for me. This finishes in a really black color which stands out against the weathered gray of my blacktop, but I don't mind. You may need to find ways to color it after the fact to blend better. One thing to consider is that this stuff is made somewhat locally, so the quality can vary between manufacturers (note on the bag that the product names are licensed). The company that makes it here (Sakrete) is very good in general and this product has never disappointed for me.
