Questions & Answers

I have patterned layed concrete blocks with pea gravel between them. They are approximately 2-3 inches apart. Will this help to keep the weeds down?

Asked by: Cber
If you don't want to redo the pavers, your best bet is put landscape fabric under the pea gravel. You can use a wet-vac to vacuum out the pea gravel, or remove by hand. Lay landscape fabric over all and cut out. You will still get the occasional weed. You can use vinegar, Roundup, or whatever you use on weeds. HD sells a good polypropylene landscape fabric. It last for years. They sell good leather gloves too if you choose to remove the pea gravel by hand. I know working with pea gravel, stone, etc. is hard on a body. Good luck!

I am going to build a planter bed out of cinder blocks and planned on using this to fill in the holes and stabilize the wall. Will this work?
Asked by: JLG
One thing to consider is how high you'e going. If you're only going to build it about two or three you can probably get away with it, but I'd use regular cement. On a low wall (2 to 3 high) you could fill just the bottom ones and the rest with regular sand or gravel--depending on what look you prefer. Anything higher than that though, I'd use cement in all or at lest every other (and the top row, of course). Another plus with cement is you can get different colors and paint it in the future if you so desire. Oh yeah, one more thing if you're gong to build a high or deep wall: don't forget to use a good adhesive between the blocks (sides, tops, and bottoms) so the wall doesn't keel over from the weight and pressure of the soil, especially when it rains or gets watered. Good luck with you project!

PermaSand 40 lb. Paver Joint Sand is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 617.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great if use a vibrator compactor to install I used this product when installing a 60 foot front walkway. It was much cheaper than joint sand for sale at the dedicated hardscape yard where I purchased pavers. I used a vibratory compactor to get cracks between the bricks filled. I had to reapply sand and vibrate seven times before joint sand stopped settling (aka disappearing in to the spaces between pavers). Without using a vibratory compactor, I do not think I could have properly filled the joints. I think much of the dissatisfaction with this product is due it is due to incomplete filling of the joints. Sakrete does not help by seeming to indicate the product can be properly installed without using a vibratory compactor. Installation without a compactor might work if the gaps between the pavers are large I suppose. With small joint widths, my experience would indicate one would not get complete joint fill without using a vibratory compactor. They rent vibratory compactors at many Home Depots.

No matter how careful you are, you will still get white spots on your pavers. I should not have bought this Sakrete Polymeric sand. I've done a lot of pavers but never used this brand of Polylmeric Sand. I had a small area to do and thought this would be more cost effective. I had read the reviews about getting white spots on the pavers so I was extra careful. I poured the sand into the cracks using a cup (to minimize any on top of the pavers) and left at least a 1/4 inch to the top of the pavers. I swept the area 2-3 times making sure there was no sand on top of the pavers. I then used a tank sprayer filled with water to wet down the sand in the cracks. I also washed the edges of the pavers so that any sand particles would wash into the cracks. This was a lot more work than I had ever done with any pavers before. I still got some white spots on the pavers. I wet down each spot and used a brush and was able to reduce how noticeable the spots were but most were still there.

Every so often there will be a pebble that clogs up the nozzle, but maybe only happens 2-3 times per 40 lbs bucket. Light sprinkle of water after sweeping excess off pavers will give you a really nice finish. Hardens in 24 hr

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not sure why bad reviews I followed the instructions completely and the product is as advertised. The Santa hardened between my paver joints and is a very pretty tan color. It did darken up a little. Installation took longer than expected because every time the leaf blower or went over the pavers, a little more dust would come up in the air. I made sure that all of the sand and dust was off of the pavers before I wet them. I also used the mist setting on my hose head instead of shower like it recommends to make sure that it watered it in softly. I was also careful not to overwater/let standing water accumulate because that would washout the bonding agent ( Learned this from other reviews). I would imagine the bad reviews came about because either the sand was overwatered, drowning the bonding agent, or the dust was not completely removed from the pavers, leaving a white haze of discoloration. Take your time with installation and you won't regret buying this product.

What they don't tell you is that if you are using a cement paver that is darker in color, and it is porous, after sweeping and blowing what is left on the top after tamping things down...You will spend the next two weeks scrubbing your pavers with either hot water or white vinegar trying to get the polymeric haze off and bring the color of your pavers back. This has caused me no end of grief. It also caused me to get on the internet and try to see if this was a isolated problem. It is NOT! There are other companies out there that produce this kind of product that guarantee that you will not get any haze from using their product, my suspicion of this one is that there is a certain amount of concrete powder mixed with the sand and polymer and this is what is the devil to get out of the pores of your pavers...Use this product at your own peril. Wish I could say something positive about it...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked exactly as expected If you follow the instructions, this product works just fine. It was very easy to apply with a push broom and I do recommend using a plate compactor if you have a reasonably-sized project as it helps get the first application of sand all the way into the cracks of the pavers. I swept in one application, compacted it, and then swept in a second application. I also followed their recommendation to use a leaf blower to blow the excess sand and dust off the pavers as my pavers were red, which are particularly susceptible to staining with this produce. I then wet the sand using the shower setting on my hose nozzle and in less than a day, the sand had hardened nicely setting the pavers and making the entire pathway firmer. It's only been a week, so I can't speak to the durability of this product, but so far it's behaving exactly as I'd hoped it would.

Bought it again 6 months later for different area and it didn't "set" at all. just loose sand, washing out, now all over the surface and my yard. contacted sacrete to tell them I think I got a bad bucket and they were highly inappropriate with their response, and put the blame one me and my installation. I give their customer service a 0/10 and would recommend finding a different brand and more reliable product. Just my personal experience, again it worked well once for me.
