Questions & Answers

Is it possible to make a stepping stone in the shape of a pillow? Would it have air bubbles or be smooth?

Asked by: PillowSoft
Yes, you can make a stepping stone in the shape of a pillow. Do you want to just make the outer edge pillow-shaped, or do you want an actual dimensional (mounded & rounded) pillow shape? There are multiple ways you can do this. If you just want a rectangle, you can make a mold in the rectangular shape you want, filling in areas at the edges with newspaper to arc them ina little like a pillow - a lid of a paper ream box lined with plastic would work - then you can produce many stepping stones. Or you can do a one-off by starting out with some kind of rectangular form (like a box lid lined with plastic) and then carving the surface to look more dimensional and "pillow like". You might even be able to put the mixed concrete into a plastic bag (if it's the right size)and just shape it to the pillow shape you want, then poke a few holes in the bag so it will let the concrete dry. If this is going to be used as a stepping stone, just be sure it's not something that will turn into a trip and fall hazard or become slippery if it ices up in winter from snow or frozen rain.

Can I use this to create a faux concrete table top by molding it around an existing table top? Will this work for outdoor application and directly exposed to elements?
Asked by: BobHabla
Bob: Not a simple yes or no answer, so here goes: Yes, you could use this for a table top, but it depends on what your base table is made of and whether it will stick to that pre-existing substance. In most cases, you'll need to scuff up the original tabletop to give the product something to stick to. As for outside use, the concrete will be fine, but how long the table lasts depends on what your base table is made of. I wouldn't use a wood base in areas where it would freeze. I'm not sure about plastics and vinyl, although I've seen a thin coat of concrete applied to a countertop before, that appeared to hold well. If you only want one season out of this thing, you could do a skim coat of concrete - or even a thicker slab - and the concrete will wear fine. A thicker coat will better handle the stress of heavier things being put on the table. Your greatest risk is separation of the concrete from your table. With any concrete product, it's good to add a little extra water to let the "cream" come to the surface so you'll have a smoother top. If you're not certain about your existing tabletop, you could apply a sheet of cement board to the top of the table and then apply the product to that. Good luck. -Coral

Asked by: Joe
It would be extremely heavy and hard to handle. I would try using a lighter material.

ShapeCrete 20 lb. Shape-able Concrete Mix is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 233.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Alternative to Clay If you are someone who likes to go to the local pottery shop to make items out of clay, then this will be a material that you'll fall in love with right away. Shapecrete is as easy to mold and sculpt as clay is. The advantage of this product is that you don't have to own your own kiln to dry your sculpture or make time to get down to the pottery shop. You can sculpt by hand or with tools it into whatever you can dream up. When you are all done set it aside and let it dry for about 24 hours. When this hardens it is as tough as concrete. It is extremely durable and can be painted or stained. The options are pretty much limitless. Mixing this material couldn't be any easier. Follow the mixing instructions to get the desired consistency --- Clay Like Mixture (Thicker) vs. Casting Like Mixture (Thinner). Simply add water and let your creative side take over. You will have approximately 30 to 45 minutes, which depends on your consistency, of work time once you have completed mixing the material.

What could be better for an artist that want to do outdoor sculptures than sculptable concrete? Shapecrete, when mixed correctly, has the constancy and works like wet sand at the beach and after it sets...concrete! There is a slight learning curve but the results are impressive. I'm buying more soon!

By using ShapeCrete, I don’t have to hassle with having to mix my own. On the other hand, the mark up is so high that it took 3 buckets, $60, to sculpt a fountain under 24 inches tall. Using my mix would have cost about $15.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really neat product. Requires some practice and a fair amount of creativity This is a really neat product. It's a concrete mix with embedded fibers and a consistency that lets you shape and mold the concrete while wet. Based on my experience, it isn't nearly as firm or moldable like clay, but you can definitely produce complex shapes with intricate detail. But you can also add a little more water to create a mix that will easily pour into mold. My challenge is figuring out how to make creative and interesting uses of ShapeCrete. I need to watch some videos to get ideas on concrete projects and crafts. As an initial test, I created a simple mold using a cardboard coffee "can" and a water bottle, making a very basic vertical flower pot / vase. Mixing and pouring the ShapeCrete was relatively simple, and after a few days, I was able to peel off the cardboard coffee can and pull out the water bottle. The next test was giving some to my kids to have them make something. They had a good time and we learned how the thicker mix behaves and how it can be shaped. I really like the product and will try and think of more projects and crafts for ShapeCrete.

I had more luck pouring the concrete than using the shaping method. I gave this a 4-star as it is about 8x more expensive than regular concrete. This was my 1st adventure in concrete - I made some pots, some concrete flowers made from silicone molds and dipped some small plastic creatures in concrete - loved them all. I will be using the regular concrete in the future - if I can figure out how to get an 80 pound bag home. I'm not sure how to change my nickname 'disappointed', but I liked this product.

I don’t think that I’ll be able to chase my outdoor sculpture piece!I understand that air pits are common, but they should be correctible.
