Can I use this to create a faux concrete table top by molding it around an existing table top? Will this work for outdoor application and directly exposed to elements?
Asked by: BobHabla
Bob: Not a simple yes or no answer, so here goes: Yes, you could use this for a table top, but it depends on what your base table is made of and whether it will stick to that pre-existing substance. In most cases, you'll need to scuff up the original tabletop to give the product something to stick to. As for outside use, the concrete will be fine, but how long the table lasts depends on what your base table is made of. I wouldn't use a wood base in areas where it would freeze. I'm not sure about plastics and vinyl, although I've seen a thin coat of concrete applied to a countertop before, that appeared to hold well. If you only want one season out of this thing, you could do a skim coat of concrete - or even a thicker slab - and the concrete will wear fine. A thicker coat will better handle the stress of heavier things being put on the table. Your greatest risk is separation of the concrete from your table. With any concrete product, it's good to add a little extra water to let the "cream" come to the surface so you'll have a smoother top. If you're not certain about your existing tabletop, you could apply a sheet of cement board to the top of the table and then apply the product to that. Good luck. -Coral

would this work good in weighing down a fake plant sitting on my patio? Wind keeps blowing it over and looking to add this to the bottom of the pot to give it some more weight.
Asked by: Angela
Might work if you used the entire bucket and added some rocks to it.

Can this material be used to make and outdoor chimeny or stove? I have bricks already.

Asked by: Fig
No, this material cannot be used as a mortar. It is too strong and will break the bricks. You will need to use a mortar mix for that application. You will also need to use a High Heat mortar for any areas that are going to be in the firebox or in direct contact with the flame.

Our customer entrance door has a 2 inch rise from the parking lot to the shop floor. I need to make a ramp so customers don't trip. Will this work for that purpose.
Asked by: Rampman
Yes and no. Let me explain. The product will probably hold the shape you want more effectively than standard cement because it has hardening fibers in it. It would help to have a wooden mold in place to hold the shape you need (but, then, if you use a mold you can buy the less expensive standard cement & mix in sand). The problem you'll have is with the new concrete ramp sticking to the old concrete and not cracking over time. The new ramp will be vulnerable to cracking from stress where it's thinnest, and it may not last very long. Most concrete people will probably tell you it's more effective to remove the old concrete and pour new, for that reason. If you're determined to do an add-on and not replace the existing, you definitely have to rough up the original concrete to give the new something to adhere to - you could do that with an angle grinder. There are products that help new cement attach to old, but I don't know enough about them to know whether they're absolutely necessary, and I think they suggest roughing up the old, anyway. Another thought - there are some companies that make pre-made rubber mats for this kind of situation - they're tapered - won't last forever, but might be cheaper and easier than removing and replacing a big section of concrete. And another thought - you could make a ramp from tapered wood (if not exposed to weather) or even metal that gets bolted to the concrete. I used to sell commercial hardware and Macklinberg-Duncan (spelling?) used to sell every variation you could ask for in aluminum and wood transition thresholds - - so someone like them might have a prefab product. - Good luck - C

ShapeCrete 20 lb. Shape-able Concrete Mix is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 184.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Alternative to Clay If you are someone who likes to go to the local pottery shop to make items out of clay, then this will be a material that you'll fall in love with right away. Shapecrete is as easy to mold and sculpt as clay is. The advantage of this product is that you don't have to own your own kiln to dry your sculpture or make time to get down to the pottery shop. You can sculpt by hand or with tools it into whatever you can dream up. When you are all done set it aside and let it dry for about 24 hours. When this hardens it is as tough as concrete. It is extremely durable and can be painted or stained. The options are pretty much limitless. Mixing this material couldn't be any easier. Follow the mixing instructions to get the desired consistency --- Clay Like Mixture (Thicker) vs. Casting Like Mixture (Thinner). Simply add water and let your creative side take over. You will have approximately 30 to 45 minutes, which depends on your consistency, of work time once you have completed mixing the material.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really neat product. Requires some practice and a fair amount of creativity This is a really neat product. It's a concrete mix with embedded fibers and a consistency that lets you shape and mold the concrete while wet. Based on my experience, it isn't nearly as firm or moldable like clay, but you can definitely produce complex shapes with intricate detail. But you can also add a little more water to create a mix that will easily pour into mold. My challenge is figuring out how to make creative and interesting uses of ShapeCrete. I need to watch some videos to get ideas on concrete projects and crafts. As an initial test, I created a simple mold using a cardboard coffee "can" and a water bottle, making a very basic vertical flower pot / vase. Mixing and pouring the ShapeCrete was relatively simple, and after a few days, I was able to peel off the cardboard coffee can and pull out the water bottle. The next test was giving some to my kids to have them make something. They had a good time and we learned how the thicker mix behaves and how it can be shaped. I really like the product and will try and think of more projects and crafts for ShapeCrete.

Shape Crete works quite well for my purpose in making garden stones and planters. A bit coarse for minor details, but certainly better than regular cement for the purpose. I also use it to make an embellishment cast in a silicone mold. Working time is about 15 minutes. It must cure for at least 24 hours before removal from forms.

I was excited about the potential and ordered it. It came on the day it was supposed to. It was fun trying the different options - moldable, pourable, etc. I even colored some of it, as I was making stones that had a design in the center.
