Questions & Answers

Can you cover this to prevent hardening while waiting for for first coat to dry?

Can you cover this to prevent hardening while waiting for for first coat to dry?
Asked by: Jeff
Jeff Thank you for your question. Durabond is a setting type compound. Once it is added to water it starts to set up and then chemically hardens within a specific time frame. You cannot reverse this process or slow it down. You cannot retemper this by adding more water. Mix the compound in small quantities. Do not allow it to harden in your equipment or tools.

Can this be used just to fill pit holes in smooth concrete walls, then painted over with epoxy primer / paint?
Asked by: Kyle
Yes, with limitations. https://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfImages/da/dabb5bc2-ae2a-4cd6-8d2f-1b08e7abe687.pdf Per the submittal sheet 09250 for Durabond, "These easy-to-mix chemically setting powder compounds provide low shrinkage and superior bond, which make them excellent for laminating gypsum panels to gypsum panels, to sound-deadening boards, and to above-grade concrete surfaces. In addition, DurabonD setting-type joint compounds can be used for filling, smoothing and finishing interior concrete ceilings and above-grade concrete." Additionally, the applicable limitation here are, "3. Do not apply over moist surfaces or surfaces likely to become moist, or on below-grade surfaces or surfaces projecting outside building structure unless protected from direct exposure to moisture. 4. Cure new interior concrete surfaces 60 days or more before using DurabonD setting-type joint compounds. Remove protrusions, ridges, form or parting oils, grease and efflorescence. 5. Prior to using any epoxy coating over any surface treated with joint compound, consult the epoxy coating manufacturer and follow manufacturer’s recommendations regarding the preparation or suitability of substrates for the epoxy coating. Many epoxy coatings exert significant shear stress on the substrate as the strong epoxy film shrinks while curing/drying. This stress can cause the bond of the joint compound to fail, resulting in delamination problems." So Yes, but the surface must be dry and likely to remain dry, be above grade, clean, and be protected from direct moisture. Make sure the concrete has cured for at least 60 days. You will want to read the epoxy manufacturer's instructions regarding its suitability over durabond and the concrete. As a side note, all legitimate contractors (bonded, insured, licensed if required, and registered with the county if required) have a "Workmanlike Manner" standard to abide by. In Ohio, all home constructions services shall be supplied to the following standards and in the following order of priority: a) in compliance with Residential Code of Ohio, b) in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and specifications, c) if not contained in (a) or (b), then according OHBA standards. Too many contractors deliver inferior finished products as a result of not following directions to the "T". To everyone, please follow directions!

Can I use Durabond 90 on 1/2 Durarock as a joint compound with Alkali-Resistant Cement Board Tape?

Can I use Durabond 90 on 1/2 Durarock as a joint compound with Alkali-Resistant Cement Board Tape?
Asked by: DIYer
No. Alkali-Resistant Cement Board Tape is specifically designed for cement board finishing and is used with a dry or thin set mortar. There are exceptions, but for the most part, durabond is used for drywall applications. For durock, a cement board, you will definitely want to use Alkali-Resistant Cement Board Tape, but with a thin set mortar. Consult manufacturers instructions for the cement board, the tape, and the thin set for curing times and installation specifics.

Can I use this for prefilling some small gaps in drywall?

First time drywaller and I have a few gaps in some spots where drywall sheets meet. Majority 1/4" with no gaps bigger then a 1/2". From what I've read online I can use this as prefill to smooth out those areas, then tape and mud after this dries. Is that correct and what products would be recommended to tape and mud over this?
Asked by: Jp
Yes, you will want to use this product to fill in the gaps, but durabond has limitations. "1. DurabonD setting-type joint compounds are more difficult to sand and smooth after drying and should be smoothed before set or while damp, but not completely hardened." As a first time drywaller, I would recommend Plus3 to embed Sheetrock Joint tape, NOT MESH TAPE. Mesh tape requires a time setting joint compound, like durabond, however, is extremely difficult to master as a first timer. Proper steps in your case are, 1. Prefill gaps and let dry (durabond 90 so follow instructions on dry time and recoat time) 2. embed tape with Plus3 (usually ready for first coat the following day in proper drying conditions) 3. First Coat to cover tape with Plus3 (very important to COVER tape completely, and again, usually ready to redcoat the following day) 4-5. Use Plus3 2 more times to smooth and feather out the joint (to make the wall and seam appear "seamless")

Unfortunately the people I learned from used the all purpose or easy sand stuff. That stuff can not hold a candle to durabond. It drys hard as stone and can still be sanded easily. I did a job where the dry-wallers didn't do a good job (large seems), and this product took the challenge like a champ. Also, the tape just glues onto this product. The first time I used Durabond it was in a very humid room. I thought I was going to get many bubbles, and not one happened. The 90 has about a 65 minute good working time. At my skill set, working alone, I can mix about half a bag at a time, and use it before the mud starts setting. For DIY'ers and first timers I would mix only a pan at a time to become comfortable using the product.

It cures hard, filling gaps that other pre-mixes shrink out of. Slake time, the time between mixing and applying, is important to efficient use of Durabond. Mix a bit on the thin side and give it five-minutes to slake; ready then in a spreadable consistency. Also, clean tools/trays thoroughly between mixes. Residual product shortens the "life" of the next batches, bringing about a premature hardening. STILL, a great product for those must-fill spaces, divots and valleys.
