can I add more shelves so it should come out to like 7 or 8 feet?

Asked by: yank
I would NOT recommend putting this system together any higher than it is. It is not a stable system. You MUST secure this to a wall in a minimum of three points per rear pylon. It is a very wobbly loose fitting shelving unit.

Can I add casters to the bottom so it can roll around?

Asked by: jjt
I don't think so. The feet (to me anyway) did not look like they would hold the casters that I've seen in the past

5-Tier Metal Shelf is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great concept but poor execution!!! This product has been disappointing right from the moment I have opened the box. The first thing I noticed is that there was absolutely no cushioning whatsoever in the packaging. There were plastic pieces and broken parts all over the package. The plastic used in the construction is cheaply made and there were several dents on the metal shelves as well. The assembly takes around 20-30 minutes overall. The assembled shelving also looks wobbly and I would not risk putting any heavy or expensive items on it. All in all, I would not recommend this product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from More style than substance. Check for damage before dragging home! I bought several sets only to discover that all but one shelf were damaged due to inadequate packaging. Open both ends of the boxes before you leave the store and verify the black plastic end caps are intact. The metal edges can also dent, so these stylish shelves may not look good after heavy use. Lastly, be advised the unit is 47" wide (not 48" as the box states) and its posts are deeply offset resulting in a net of only 41" shelf space. Other than these issues, they look better than most others, but are a bit wobbly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Waste Your Money On These Poorly Made Shelves! I don't give one-star reviews lightly, but I pride myself on being honest about the products I review. And in this case, I have to be honest; I would not recommend these shelves to anyone. For starters, when the shelves arrived, one was badly dented up. I reexamined the box, but no damage to the cardboard was evident at all. There is no packing material inside the box at all to cushion the contents. The shelf material itself is a plastic resin with very thin galvanized sheet metal of the type that you'd use for HVAC heating/cooling ducts. The resin parts are very poorly cast, and arrive attached to plastic casting frames that you must detach the parts from. Many, if not most of the plastic parts have cast seams on them, so that they do not fit together properly, unless you take the time to shave them down with a razor knife to trim off the excess plastic. Assembly is easy enough, if you can get the parts to fit together. The instructions are a complete joke. The illustrations look like they were done by a child, and there is very little text instruction given at all. The instruction sheet shows the parts that are included, and how many of each there are but in the case of Part #D, they show you get 4, but in reality you get 8. Nowhere in the instructions do they bother to show or tell you what Part #D is for. I am guessing that Part #D is a plastic spacer for attaching the shelves to a wall. The instructions also show a group of tools that are not included, which it says you will need, yet the only tool they show you to use is a level. They also depict a screwdriver, a drill, a drill bit (no size given), a drywall anchor, a screw, and a washer. They don't bother telling you how many of each you'll need, or what size you'll need. The illustration of tools shows a work-glove as well. I supposed that is so you won't get cut by the sharp edges of the flimsy sheet metal shelves. The safety section of the instructions says that you must attach the shelves to a wall. There is a good reason for that. The shelves are so flimsy and wobbly that attaching it to a wall is the only way to make it safe. The instructions also have a section called "Disposal", which tells you to follow local regulations for the proper disposal of the product and/or its components. If you just got this shelf, and are in the midst of assembling it, why would you already be considering disposing of it? I can think of a few reasons... In the section of the instructions called Legal and Technical Information, it tells you not to place it near heat sources, don't store hot objects on it, store solvents or corrosive materials on it, and that placing it in direct sunlight may cause the color and durability of the parts to fade over time. Then the instructions go into the terms of their warranty, one requirement being that you must preserve the instructions and proof of purchase to make a warranty claim. The funny thing is, nowhere on the instructions, or even the box, does it say who the manufacturer is, or how to contact them other than a website address on the box, which you might miss noticing if you are not careful. The shelves themselves have under-braces that fit loosely and slide around. I don't know if that is intentional or just more sloppy manufacturing. I seriously doubt that these shelves will hold the maximum 250 LB that the instructions claim. If all you want is something to hold light-weight crafts or something, maybe they will be okay with you. I would not trust them with anything heavy or valuable. Home Depot sells some very good shelves, and I have reviewed some of them, and do recommend them. These are not good shelves at all. That is my honest opinion folks!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sturdy Shelf This is a nice, sturdy shelving unit. I like that it has solid shelves. I've noticed that many of these utilitarian/industrial shelving units the shelves are wire and not great for storing smaller items or keeping things level. However these are nice, wide solid shelves. The metal also looks nice. Building it was a bit of a pain, but nothing too time consuming or difficult. I was mostly able to build it myself, but a couple times had my husband helped me. The little plastic rings that lock the shelves in place really have to be placed properly and locked into place otherwise you'll find them slipping down when you push the shelf on. But, overall an easy assembly and very practical storage unit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good design, flawed manufacturing This is a sturdy lightweight shelving unit made from galvanized sheet steel and rugged plastic resin. The box proclaimed that it could assembled in minutes with no tools required. Neither claim was true in my case. 16 strong plastic poles has a series of indentations that matched a split fitting that was firmly locked in place by the shelf. If the shelf was raised, the fitting could be opened and moved up and down the pole giving easy adjustment of the shelf. The shelves had end caps that were riveted to the metal sheet that carried the load. In my case about half of the holes in the metal were misaligned with the hole in the end cap- see the photo. This meant that the poles would not fit. I used a Roto-Zip tool to remove the offending metal taking care not to cut into the plastic, then used a half round file to remove the burrs. After the better part of a day I had the shelving assembled and securely screwed to the wall of my shop. With uniformly distributed loading, the claim is that the shelves can each hold 200lbs, for a maximum of half a ton for the unit. Pressing down on the shelf by hand suggests that the shelves will hold that much with less sagging than on some of my other shelves. If the manufacturer can improve their quality control these units would deserve a five star rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for the price Let's just call it like it is - this is a good shelf for a great price. If it sold for $200, this would be a 2 star rating at best, but for the $60 it currently sells for, it's a great deal. I wouldn't exactly use this in a mechanic's garage and throw transmissions on it, but it's perfect for our basement storage needs. I actually have 7 shelves in my basement - all 7 are different, and this is one of my favorites. It's a perfect combination of value and quality. ASSEMBLY Tedious, but simple. Everything but the shelves are plastic, and all those plastic parts arrive attached to each other. Convenient for keeping them neat and organized in the box, but a pain to break everything apart before assembly. Some other reviewers complained that the parts don't fit together - I found that they fit, they just fit very snugly, which in my opinion is a good thing. Who wants a wobbly shelf? (It may be worth noting I'm a young 6'4", 200lb man, so "convincing" these parts to go together may have been easier for me than others) FINISHED PRODUCT I'm impressed - considering it's mostly plastic, it's very sturdy. The instructions state it can hold 200lbs per shelf - I'm not willing to test that, but it comfortably holds the 50lbs or so I have on each shelf. I like that if you have more than one of these shelves you can connect them together, further enhancing their sturdiness. I may end up buying 1 or 2 more.

I am so, so sorry I didn't follow my instincts and buy some at COSTCO. Like another review, the caps on the ends of the shelves were, for the most part, cracked and broken. They are difficult to assemble - especially if you want to vary the height between shelves. Once assembled, they are VERY wobbly. I cannot imaging placing 200 pounds on the top shelf?! Please, do not buy these - even their all plastic shelving units for $19.99 feel more stable. I would have returned them, but it was just too much trouble. Maybe that is what they were counting on? Good thing they are in the garage.
