Q:How long do the cartridges usually last in residential applications before they need replacement?

Answer This Question

A:  Our American Standard toilets with Sloan Flushmate units were installed in 1995. One cartridge had to be replaced in 2019. The other one is just now failing (Feb.2023). We have only two people living in the house since new, so your mileage may vary.

A:  It will remain mostly dry. Residual water may collect but you're talking about a very small, immeasurable amount. The seal on the cartridge is allowing the water to seep out of it. Eventually it will fail to pressurize the vessel enough that it won't flush any longer. Replacement is a snap.

    by|Jan 27, 2020

A:  Some water can be expected. The cartridge accumulates some on top. That’s probably what you’re seeing.

      by|Jan 28, 2020

A:  Nope, the interior of the "tank" doesn't have to be dry, as a little water leaks out of an anti-siphon fitting at the top of the pressure tank where the water line attaches to the pressure vessel. This is normal and it falls into the toilet on every flush. Replace this part only if the toilet doesn't flush properly. Otherwise save your money.

        by|Jan 28, 2020

A:  The answer is NO you don't need to repair the pressure vessel tank. The water you see is in the ceramic tank is from the over pressurizing of the pressure vessel, it's there so the pressure vessel doesn't explode from being OVER PRESURIZED....so no repair is required!! That being said if the water s at the top of the ceramic tank then the pressure vessel is leaking and should be replaced. So a little water in ceramic tank is ok but a lot of water is a pressure vessel leak that needs repairing.

          by|Jan 27, 2020

A:  Yes, the tank should never have water in it. The cartridge is normally the culprit, and since you have water around the top I guarantee it's the problem. They are easy to change just be sure to lubricate the o-rings. Good instructions come with it, be sure to read them. The cartridge doesn't normally need to be screwed all the way down.

              Huge Improvement
I've had a pressure assisted toilet for over ten years and it never seemed to perform as expected. When I started having valve activation issues and some leaking, I researched repair options and found an on-line video that showed how easy it is to change this valve. I ordered the valve kit and it was just as simple to install as the video made it look. The kit also included an inlet screen, which I didn't install, and a duckbill valve, which I did. Now a little gentle pressure is all it takes to get a strong, consistent, leak-free flush. I like the toilet better now than ever.

              Flushing again!
The valve assembly was an exact replacement for the OEM flushmate. It is working flawlessly at this point.

              Buy the OEM valve
Works well. The first two aftermarket valves failed quickly. This one works great.
