About This Product

Put out the welcome mat in your garden for visiting friends, family members and pollinators with a 10 in. x 20 in. tile of cold-hardy live Sedum succulents. Viewed at eye level, these adorable sedums form a miniature, fairy garden-friendly forest of fanciful shapes and colors. You can plant single or multiple tiles in a garden bed, border, or slope and watch the plants grow and fill in your space with wonderful ground-cover colors and forms. You can also cut the tile into about as many pieces as you see fit, enabling you to use the plants in various ways, from themed designs and small novelty planters to mixed containers or window boxes with other succulents or drought-tolerant plants. The plants are rooted in soil, with a coconut fiber mat underneath that binds the roots and soil for easy handling. When the tile is first laid, water thoroughly for the first week. After that, the plants will be well on their way to developing drought tolerance and will display their best color when water is sparse. Blooms in the spring. Hardy to USDA Zone 5/minus 20°F. Smart Planet offers a remarkable selection of drought-tolerant plants that are not only easier to care for, they're mindful of our planet too. We believe there's something special about working outside in the soil with plants or that one-of-a-kind feeling you get when tending to your indoor greenery. We grow more than just plants, we create gardening experiences for indoor and outdoor gardeners and do-it-yourselfers.

Questions & Answers

I got one of these in the spring and like it a lot, and would like more. Would this be ok to plant in September in zone 6 (Ohio)? Would the roots have enough time to develop before winter?

Confusing: In "Description" it says, "Blooms in the spring. Hardy to USDA Zone 5/minus 20°F". The "Highlights" says "Grow as an indoor houseplant or outdoors in Zone 9 and 10. Which is correct?

Will these survive mostly full sun in summer in Central Texas?

Answer This Question

It depends on how often you let them get dry. I have also noticed a portion of mine will die off favoring more cool moist ground in 100 degree weather. Water lightly at night on extremely dry and/or hot days until the roots more are established.

Does this arrive ready to hang on an indoor wall??

    Answer This Question

This product is a live sedum mat designed for planting in gardens, borders, slopes, or containers. It arrives as a mat of plants rooted in soil with a coconut fiber backing, not ready to hang on a wall. You would need to create a vertical planting system or frame to display it on a wall.

No, They are grown in the tray with a strong net holding them together.

Can these be kept in the plastic tray and placed on a flat roof? Are the trays interlocking?
        ByJul 10, 2024
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

The product description mentions planting the sedum mats in a garden bed, border, or slope. It also suggests cutting the mat into pieces for use in various ways, including small novelty planters or mixed containers. While the mats come in a plastic tray for transport, the intent is to plant them. There is no mention of the trays being interlocking. Therefore, keeping them long-term in the plastic tray on a flat roof is not the intended use.

I am pleased with the plants that I received. I ordered four of them. Three of them arrived on time. For some reason UPS was delayed in delivering the fourth one. And the plants suffered because of it. Half of it died and it took a while for them to recover. So it’s very important that they arrive as soon as possible and that you take them out of the box and get them sun and water. See attached photo of the healthy plant. They are in an area that receives sun in the morning and afternoon shade. They get watered once a day.

        Easy to plant, cold hardy
I got seven of these mats/flats delivered after getting something similar in-store several months ago and having good luck with it. All seven of these arrived in great shape, and they were very easy to plant. I basically placed them on bare loosened dirt without digging a hole, and piled some extra dirt around them. I like the variety of textures and colors, and look forward to watching them spread.

          Exactly what I needed
I needed to cover an empty / sad planter with something low maintenance that would stay green. Plants arrived healthy, and with a box cutter I could cut the “sheet” into the shape I needed (well, sort of— it was a bit unwieldy, but with patience it worked well. Very happy with this purchase.

I ordered 3 mats and I’d say 2.75 have survived being in the garden for over a month. Overall very satisfied, though some mats had a much better variety than others.

I’ve ordered before and have been very happy, but this time all 3 of the mats came with a fungus and within 3 weeks were all dead. Home Depot made it right and refunded me. But I’m also worried about the same issue since I want to still order replacements. Can you stock these in store so this is not an issue?

Ordered these sedum flats through Home Depot from Altman Nursery. They arrived quickly and were in excellent condition. We followed the instructions and removed them from their shipping boxes and placed them outside for 1-2 days to acclimate before planting. They were easy to separate into smaller sections to cover an outdoor sidewalk strip. Hopefully they'll spread over time to fill out the area.

            Beautiful, Lush Sedum Mats
These plants are beautiful. I purchased 3 mats and they came well packaged and perfect out of the box. I've had them in the house for 3 weeks waiting for the last frost to pass. The sedum have been getting morning sun and a little bit of watering about every 7 days. They have grown quite a bit since I received them. I'm planting them outdoors this weekend and I am excited to see how they do at 9000ft elevation with long harsh winters.
