This eye-catching plant is the Sunshine Ligustrum from the Southern Living Plant Collection. This shrub offers brilliant golden-yellow colored foliage that will bring great year-round color to your landscape. New growth is lime green that will continuously intensify to yellow hues as spring turns into summer, arriving at a vibrant golden yellow. The more sunlight they get, the better. More sun produces more yellow leaves, while less sun results in more yellow-green foliage. This is a sterile, non-invasive cultivar of Ligustrum that will not re-seed and spread. This plant looks great planted in containers, as a hedge, or accent in the landscape, and will also respond well to shaping into simple topiary forms. Another advantage to the Sunshine Ligustrum is that it doesn't bloom, which is great for allergy sufferers. When planting this shrub select a location that will receive full sun, use a well-drained garden soil mixed with your native soil to backfill the hole, and use a slow-release fertilizer annually in spring to keep your Sunshine Ligustrum healthy and brilliantly shining.

Q:Do you feel like they have helped keep bugs away?
by|Apr 22, 2022
3 Answers
Answer This Question

A:  I think so

by|Apr 25, 2022

A:  I really can't tell. I can tell you that the deer love them!

    by|Apr 29, 2022

A:  Sunshine Ligustrum, known for its vibrant foliage and versatility in landscaping, is not widely recognized for its ability to repel bugs. While some plants possess natural insect-repelling properties, there is limited scientific evidence specifically attributing bug-repelling qualities to Sunshine Ligustrum. If your primary goal is to keep bugs away, you might consider other plants known for their insect-repelling properties, such as citronella, lavender, or marigolds. It's important to note that the effectiveness of plants in repelling bugs can vary, and individual experiences may differ.

Q:how far apart do i plant a row of sunshine?
        by|Apr 5, 2022

        Answer This Question

A:  For a continual hedge you can plant the Sunshine Ligustrum 2 to 2.5 feet apart, center to center. The further you place them away from each other the more space you will have between them.

        by|Oct 12, 2023
          1 found this answer helpful

A:  The spacing for planting a row of Sunshine Ligustrum depends on the desired outcome and the specific variety of Ligustrum being used. Generally, for a dense, formal hedge, you can space Sunshine Ligustrum plants about 2 to 3 feet apart. This close spacing encourages the plants to grow together and form a solid hedge over time. If you prefer a more open and natural look, you may choose to space them 4 to 6 feet apart. It's essential to consider the mature width of the particular Ligustrum variety you have, as well as your landscaping goals, when determining the appropriate spacing. Adequate spacing allows each plant to receive sufficient sunlight and nutrients for optimal growth and health.

Q:How long can this plant last if planted on decorative ceramic pots?
            by|Aug 16, 2020

            Answer This Question

A:  I don't know, I planted mine in the ground. I'm sure they'd be fine in a pot as long as it large enough to accommodate the roots.

            by|May 4, 2021

A:  The lifespan of Sunshine Ligustrum when planted in decorative ceramic pots depends on various factors such as the size of the pot, the quality of the soil, the frequency of watering, and the environmental conditions. Generally, plants in containers may have a more limited lifespan compared to those planted in the ground because their root systems are confined. However, with proper care, Sunshine Ligustrum can thrive in pots for several years. It's crucial to choose a well-draining potting mix, provide adequate water, and ensure the pots have drainage holes to prevent waterlogged soil. Additionally, periodic fertilization and repotting as the plant grows can contribute to its longevity. Regular monitoring for signs of stress, such as yellowing leaves or stunted growth, and addressing any issues promptly will also help extend the life of Sunshine Ligustrum when planted in decorative ceramic pots.

              by|Nov 14, 2023

A:  It might be better to plant inside the ceramic pot instead of on it. The sunshine ligustrum should do well in a planted pot. There are to many other variables to consider to give you a more definitive answer to your question. Keep an eye on the water level. The soil should be most but not over wet and not too dry. I advise 1/3 cup of water a day for smaller container plants.

                    Perfection from start to finish
I have never ordered plants from Home Depot online before. I was apprehensive. I shouldn’t have been. The 4 plants arrived quickly in 2 boxes, which were sized perfectly for the plants. Plastic secured the containers so that almost no dirt fell out. They arrived still moist, not a twig bent, and full and healthy. I am so happy with these 4 Sunshine Privets! And you can’t beat the price! Thank you!

                          Unfortunate difference in product
Our family installed a row of Sunshine Ligustrums this summer and were very satisfied with the numerous plants bought in store. Another family member had to order one of the plants online since we bought all that was in-store. The plants bought in-store have larger and denser foliage with a striking combination of yellow and green. The online purchased plant has small foliage that is not near as dense with coloring that is a low contrast pastel yellow and green. The result is a much different looking plant in our front yard lacking the characteristics that caused us to buy them in-store in the first place. Attached with this post are pictures of the two (looks far more different in person). I'm wondering what to do about this. We verified that the correct product was ordered online and the plant tag was correct.

                            they arrived looking beautiful
I ordered 3 Sunshine Ligustrum and they all arrived looking really good! I had ordered Three Oakland Holly bushes previously and they also arrive looking great so I was hoping that the Sunshine Ligustrum would also arrive looking great as well. I was not disappointed! They are packed in such a way that even with some rough handling they still came out unharmed! Ligustrum have much more delicate leaves then the Holly bushes, so I was a bit concerned but it turned out they were fine!

I LOVE ❤my plants, but the deers ate them. I am trying to bring them back to life now. I'm so in tears. I have pictures of my beautiful driveway, and now I also have pictures of my destroyed plants. I still love my plants. Have a great day and thank you.

I waited almost a full year to review, in case my fears came true... WELL they did. These bushes have completely died for no apparent reason. I followed instructions to a T. And yet, I still have about 7 hideous dead spriggy bushes in front of my house. Wish I could get a refund - do NOT recommend.

This was an experiment. I needed these for a full sun area when I purchased them. Not much can grow here with color except succulents and cactus. They were not that great in 113 degrees heat with California mountain winds. I continued to care for them and this first spring has given me a reward for my efforts. If you are in a hard to grow area and have some patience, this one is hardy enough to grow in its first year without being green thumb gardener. It is difficult for me to grow many things in a garden because I only want to water and mulch. Watering more frequent in the middle of the summer desert temperatures is a must for any garden. It helps to add mountain rocks. I added the Paprika Rose (Rosa) Live Shrub next to it at the same time with much more success. See image.
