I used these screws to assemble an outdoor swing set in Pittsburgh PA. Still rust-free after 3+ years.

I used these in a variety of applications with pressure treated wood and cedar. I have noticed no corrosion or other issues.

Answer

This would probably work if you're going through the 4" side and into the 6X6. You'll have 2.5" of thread. An 8" lag might be better though or even go with a bolt if you can. You could probably use an 8" bolt and a nut if you counter sink an inch on both sides.

Is the HCR coating OK to use against aluminum?

Asked by imdjay June 13, 2019
1
Answer

The answer to this depends on the application. Carbon steel and Aluminum will create electrolysis between dissimilar metals causing the aluminum to deteriorate and erode. If this is a short term application, the carbon steel fastener will work (regardless of coating). If you are looking for your project to have longevity, we recommend a stainless steel fastener. Thanks for being a SPAX customer!

Can these be used to attach decking floor framing. Meaning a 6x6 attached to a 2x6 for a deck outer framing?

Is a pilot hole required?

A pilot hole would help, but if you have enough torque you can get these in without. If joining two pieces, you will want to drill through the top piece large enough to clear the threads so it draws into the bottom piece.

Will this item work for securing a railing to a balcony? How much force will it need before pulling out or breaking?

I discovered these great lag bolts several years ago when building a deck and have used them many times since for applications needing high corrosion resistance and ease of driving such as reattaching the skids on my dock float and sistering a 3 x 8 timber on the dock ramp. Both of these are situations that required awkward positioning and driving with a battery powered impact driver. The special threads self drill and reduce driving difficulty and the hex heads handle the driving load with ease.

Did exactly what I needed it to do. Used to join a horizontal 4x4 to a ground flush cut vertical 4x4 to replace rotted garden border. Pre drilled, counter sunk and filled with wood putty now ready to stain. Because of flare no washer needed.
