Q:Are these good for oudoor use? Specifically, for use in a planter box build?

    Answer This Question

A:  No. These screws are not designed for exterior use. You do not want to use zinc screws in the elements. The exterior screws linked below. They come in 1 1/4 inch as opposed to 1-inch. https://www.homedepot.com/p/SPAX-8-x-1-1-4-in-T-Star-Plus-Flat-Head-Interior-Exterior-HCR-X-Screw-230-Box-4191670400326/206677141

A:  We do not recommend a Zinc coated screw for exterior applications. Check out our HCR-X coating that is High Corrosion Resistant and approved for pressure treated lumber and outdoor applications. Thank you for being a SPAX customer.

A:  I wouldn't want to rely on fasteners alone for a planter--I would also use exterior-grade wood glue--because screws tend to pull from end-grain connections unless they are very long. That said, these should be able to withstand the elements indefinitely. The zinc plating on these is good.

saw these at local HD across from the bargain packs of screws. mounting an infrared light for a security camera outdoors I needed something to drill through siding and wood. the key here is that the light is 3lbs and needs to absolutely not sag (screws not firm in the wood) because it will change the illuminating angle and to fix it might require more holes in my siding or it simply won't work illuminating what it needs to. these screws are actually cheaper per piece than the HD bargain screws and cut through siding and bit into the wood like butter. don't hesitate to buy. these are fantastic!!

Although I meant to get the Pan Head Full Thread this was fine since the screw holes were small enough that the base was pulled into the hole.

Used for drawer fronts - good and bad
We used the Spax #8 1" wood screws to attach drawer fronts to drawers. The good is that you don't have to predrill the drawer fronts. We were skeptical - especially since the fronts are 100% cherry. However, they actually work without drilling the holes with no splitting (yet). However, the combo square drive / phillips drive is a bust. When heavy torque is applied (as in attaching the cherry drawer fronts), the heads consistently stripped out. We went through a lot of screws that ended up being thrown away before we had the fronts attached. If these were available with just a square drive, they probably wouldn't have stripped out. Also, they are pretty expensive if you don't really need their special ability to skip pre-drilling - especially given the weakness of the head. I would only recommend them in special situations.

Solid fastener with the option of using the far superior Robertson bit (square) instead of the mediocre to downright aggravating philips head. Another winner from Spax
