Questions & Answers

is the lenght (96 IN.) adjustable? I can shortened the lenght?

Asked by: Anonymous
The lateral dimensions are fixed, and while Home Depot.com only carries the 4'x8' size, the Saferacks website has 2', 3' or 4' by 4', 6' or 8' sizes, with drop-downs from 12" to 45"

Garage Interior is not finished with drywall, paneling etc. can hanging vertical rods/bars be adjusted to keep shelf horizontally level. ?
Asked by: HowMan
I think so. The bars can be moved as you want but they do need to be secured against your studs. But having the drywall also gives it more stability now thinking about when you are loading/unloading the rack - it is secured against the stud but the rest of the bar is "secured" against the drywall in order to avoid it to move. It could work but I am not sure if it will be a 100% installation to your satisfaction.

can the rack be install to RC . the garage all ready has drywall and Rc channels?
Asked by: Dc
I am not sure what Rc channels are but I installed them in a finished garage that was sheet rocked and painted. I used a stud finder and then a small nail to ensure l located the center of the studs. Not hard, justhe time consuming. I installed two in a two car garage on both sides of garage door opener. Plenty of room.

The most difficult part is finding studs to anchor the main brackets. Once that is done, the rest is easy. We were trying to make space to park our two cars in our 2-car garage. We have several metal floor shelves that are 6 feet high, 4 feet wide, and 2 feet deep. One of them we were trying to get rid of so we could park a second car in the garage. However, it was holding our Christmas decorations, which also spilled out onto the floor. I looked into buying an outdoor shed, but those are not bug or dust proof and are rather expensive (the cheapest and smallest I could find was around $400). I bought this overhead rack and found it held ALL our Christmas decorations! (everything on the shelf and everything that was on the floor next to it). I then bought a second one to handle our miscellaneous items, like Halloween and Easter decorations and empty containers. And success! We can now park both cars in the garage and we don't have to pay for a storage unit, nor did we have to buy a backyard storage shed, which would take up backyard space and look ugly. I am VERY please with this product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No more tripping over stuff in the garage! The storage rack came in 2 large boxes, totalling 84 lbs. Both of the boxes were torn at the ends, so better packaging would be desirable. The rack itself was in good condition, with only a few chips in the powder coat. I installed it by myself in about 3 hours. There's a helpful installation video on the manufacturer's web site. I took my time measuring for the ceiling brackets, which was the most critical part of the installation. There were the exact number of required nuts, bolts, and washers. Eight 24" vertical posts are supplied, which allows for the rack height to be adjusted between about 22" and about 42". I set my rack height at 34" - the lowest I could set it and still walk under it. An addendum to the instructions and 8 plastic plugs were included. These are used to lock the shelf support beams so they can't be dislodged if hit from below. The plastic plugs are pretty fragile and I broke a couple of them trying to insert them. A nut and bolt can be used to substitute for the plastic plugs. The wire shelves are study and the grid is fine enough that I had no difficulty sliding bulky items to the back of the shelf. The rack overall is very sturdy and well thought-out and executed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Product, have a helper Ordered this a few weeks ago and put it up over Memorial Day weekend. Awesome product. A little tricky to install. I'm average handyman skill, so I would rate a 6-7 out of 10 difficulty. Went to the website to see if there was any help and found an installation video and updated instructions compared to what I got. Well worth watching. Take your time measuring to make sure that you're square on the ceiling, once the ceiling brackets are up the rest goes together in a snap. Got it over the minivan. Tons of stuff on it, very sturdy. All the decorations, camping gear, and old kids clothes are up. I can finally see a good chunk of the floor. Probably get a second one before the end of summer. Definitely recommend. Get some pizza and invite a handy friend over, and you're set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sturdy SafeRacks - Great price for DIY from Home Depot If you are not afraid to do this yourself then purchase here at Home Depot, you'll save some cash! I found the measuring at the ceiling the hardest part and took the longest because you want to be sure you're finding the ceiling/floor joists. Then once you do you have to measure from that point over to the next brace point and make sure you're not off by a few inches. I put two of these up back to back and that made it a little more challenging. In the end if you have two people doing the job it runs pretty quick. I'd estimate 4 hours, probably less if you are real handy! This product is very sturdy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid overhead storage rack This is a solid overhead storage rack, however the installation takes time. My garage is finished so I had to start by getting into the attic and verify the orientation of the house framing. Then, installing the L brackets to the ceiling and maintaining the required XY specs is very difficult. I am mechanically inclined so I was able to work through this but for most folks if local assembly option exists for your area you might want to consider it for a $99 fee. This took me 5 hours to finish the job and most important you must hit frame for the Lag bolts. Other reviewers said the Lag bolts busted on them but for me they did not. So, solid unit, make sure to get the L brackets on solid wood while maintaining exact XY specs or you will have problems. Read the enclosed instructions carefully and watch the Video. My comment on the Video is that this is far from an easy install as the Video would have you believe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have for any garage! Overall the SafeRacks overhead storage rack is a high quality and durable product that provides a very meaningful function. Additional units can be purchased to expand the shelving in a somewhat modular fashion. Accessories are also available such as hanging hooks for the side rails. The most critical aspect of the entire installation is the initial measuring to place the ceiling brackets. These can be secured to either run parallel or perpendicular to the ceiling joists. I placed mine perpendicular so that each corner is hung from two joists. If you have a second person available measurements will be much much easier (especially when measuring the 96" sides). Fortunately due to the quality design of the rivets to mount the side rails, the ceiling brackets are allowed to be a little out of line. The use of an impact driver will also make much faster work of the 3" lag screws. The height of the rack can be adjusted as needed (and can be changed in the future). I hung mine to be at a similar height as my garage door track. The size rack is rated to hold 600 lbs and I don't have any reason to doubt it. You need to get this rack!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent space saver. I just bought a new house, and I had the need for some overhead storage space for Christmas decorations and the like. I received this rack via UPS and I was excited to get it installed. I will tell of my install trials, and errors, and hopefully it will be easier for someone else that purchases this rack. First off, I love this rack. Once installed, it has been everything I wanted in an overhead rack system. I didn't weigh all the items I have stacked on it, however, I am sure I am close to the 600# rating, if not over. The rack is sturdy, shows no signs of bowing or failure, and atop everything else, looks clean, organized and nice. I have a relatively high garage ceiling (12foot) so I figured that installing this beauty by myself was the best option. If I had to do it again, I would ask a friend to help me. If for nothing else than to hand me things when I was standing on the top rung of my step ladder (yeah the place where it tells you it's not safe to stand on. I don't recommend this, and if you take unnecessary risks, it's on you and your decisions, so don't blame anyone else.) I first installed the brackets in the wrong direction. The brackets are 27" wide and must pass over two ceiling trusses. My garage ceiling is framed 24" on center, so once I remembered which way the trusses ran, it was no problem. I did hate, however, redoing all my hard work when I found out that it was impossible to install the rack the other direction, because I could not set the brackets at 48.5" apart. There is no leeway to that either... They must be spaced at exactly 48.5" for the down beams to work correctly. Make sure that the down beams are installed the right direction as well, or you won't be able to attach the bottom rails. Also make sure that the bottom rails are in the correct orientation, or you will be redoing that too. I think I redid everything on this install a few times, so I am pretty proficient at it now. I even read the instruction manual before I started... which is a big step for me - as I usually just like to pull the sleeves up and get going on projects without instructions. So after approx. 3 hours, and a lot of words I would never say if my mother were present, I loaded the rack to what I figured was capacity. It is holding up well and feels very solid attached to my ceiling. I will most likely purchase one or more racks to add to my overhead storage capacity. Next time I will have a helper, as it would have saved a lot of time, and my sanity. I'm just glad no one was around when I was cussing this contraption.
