Saijo Persimmon Tree

$ 59 56

Overview

The Saijo is an astringent, self-pollinating persimmon tree that produces a yellowish-orange, sweet fruit. The fruit has very few seeds which makes it ideal for eating fresh. The persimmons ripen in mid-fall and are oblong fruit with a yellow flesh. The Saijo tree also produces white-pink flowers in the late spring or early summer before it fruits, and it boasts of fall foliage. Another attractive quality of the persimmon tree is its high pest resistance. The Saijo has a moderate growth-rate and reaches around 15 ft. to 25 ft. high with a width between 10 ft. to 12 ft. Plant in full sun or partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. We graft the Saijo persimmon onto native American persimmon root stock.

You are in USDA Zone 10a. The Saijo Persimmon is zoned for 7-9. We do not recommend planting this tree in your area.

They came in very good condition and grew well. However, in 2018 when the trees finally made fruit, I discovered that one of the trees is NOT Saijo - it is some non-astringent variety. The non-astringent tree makes small fruit that is slightly sweet in taste and is crunchy, which is not what I wanted. The other tree vigorously made branches and leaves but bore only a few small fruits which do taste like Saijo, but are one third the size of the ones to which I am accustomed. This seller should ensure that the correct plants are shipped, rather than sending plants of different varieties than what the customer ordered, especially considering that, by the time the plants bear fruit, the warranty period has long since expired.
