Adjustable Shelves?

Are any of the shelves in the refrigerator adjustable? Are any of the door shelves adjustable as well? Are the door shelves deep enough for gallon jugs?

Can the internal water filter be bypassed if you have a external filtered system in your house ? Also, if you can what happens to the change filter

Asked by: Jims
You do not have to install a water filter. There is no change filter alarm that I'm aware of. Instead you're supposed to use a date sticker (supplied) to track when to change it.

We've only had our fridge for two weeks as the original order was lost by Samsung, then the second order was lost on the shipping dock for a week. Samsung was only somewhat helpful in fixing our order problems. Now that we have it, we have a very loud buzz that has developed. The repairman today said that there is a problem with the sealed unit so I guess we'll have to wait even longer to get that fixed or the fridge replaced. Needless to say this has been an unpleasant experience so far, both with Samsung and with the fridge. It's quite disappointing since, if the fridge was functioning properly, it looks like an exceptional unit. Counter depth, lots of shelves and storage, and very bright inside on both the freezer and regular sides. So while I'd like to recommend the product, the company has been too hard to deal with and a brand new fridge should not have such a serious problem. Samsung did offer some cash to offset all the problems we've had with the order but two weeks later and nothing has shown up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good refrigerator so far I purchased this right before Thanksgiving for a second home. I spent lots of time researching refrigerators. I was replacing an old side by side in a small kitchen. I wanted the counter depth and hubby did not want the french door which we have in our primary home. Also did not want to spend an arm and a leg on a refrigerator. The main problem with all of the frigs seemed to be the ice maker. The ice maker is very slow when dispensing the cubes. This one was on sale and had adequate reviews. Looking at the online reviews even the highly rated reviews seemed to have a fair number of negative reviews. The stainless does seem to spot more easily than a Kitchen Aid that I have. We were away for about 5 weeks and even without leaving much in the frig when we first opened it there was a slight odor. We removed a few things that we thought might have contributed and it seems to be ok. As long as it doesn't require any repairs in the next few years I will be happy. So far, so good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great refrigerator so far. Love my Samsung fridge. It had the clean look I wanted at half the price of European models. The LED lighting is bright and even. Cold air is ventilated across the entire back so packing a shelf full won't block circulation. My only gripe would be that the ice in the maker can lump together, but that's mainly due to lack of use. If I have people over I can dump the ice ahead of time and it works just fine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy a Samsung refrigerator Read the reviews on Consumer Affairs and the class action lawsuits first Their fridges don't last past 5 years, they don't honor their warranty and their customer service department is a nightmare. The compressor on my fridge stopped working after less than 5 years of owning it. After 6 weeks of dealing with their service dept., we gave up and bought a new fridge. This time a Whirlpool. My last one lasted 18 years at half the price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Samsung is a big company that makes some great products. Sadly, this big ticket item isn't one of... Samsung is a big company that makes some great products. Sadly, this big ticket item isn't one of them. It exhibits poor design and low build quality. It has failed several times in the two years I've owned it. Samsung appliance customer support is all but useless - the attitude (both in and out of warranty) comes across as "Tough luck, you're on your own". They twice refused to send a repair truck for serious in-warranty failures. I'd be hard pressed to recall all of the problems I've had. Here are a few, in no particular order: *Very uneven cooling in fridge and freezer, even for a single-compressor unit *Erratic and extremely slow ice dispenser *Compressor failed twice - once in warranty - but Samsung wouldn't even send a repairman. *Drawers too small and don't open wide enough to be useful (can't put a stalk of broccoli in) *Goes in to "Demo Mode" erratically - meaning, the lights work but the compressor (and all cooling) stop. Samsung claims we are doing this through touch panel controls. If that's true, it should NOT be so easy to do accidentally. Ridiculous. We've lost food to this three times - even after becoming aware of it, it still happens. If you read the threads, this problem is common to many Samsung fridge/freezer units and has been for years. Samsung must have known about for years. *Lousy build quality. Just a couple of examples here. 1) The "stainless" steel in the water/ice dispenser rusts terribly, creating a porous/unsealed surface that captures mildew, mold and grime. 2) The panels don't line up evenly. For example, the cover plate for the water dispenser has begun to poke out and won't go back in - it catches on clothes and skin and is hazardous. *The water filter is crazy hard to change. It doesn't want to "catch" so it can be turned into the fitting. You have to press VERY hard - I'm a weightlifter and it's extremely hard for me. I damaged two of the $50 filters trying to get them in - the plastic is soft and when it doesn't "catch" it bends out of shape. Yet if I press harder, I worry I'll damage the fridge itself. (I finally figured out to remove all of the shelves and all of the food and press straight up, HARD, from directly below, then twist. That works most of the time, but it's still a pain). *Water leaks from the ice/water dispenser. We have to keep a dish rag on the floor under the unit all the time. Seriously. (And yes, I made a warranty claim and Samsung refused even to show up to look). I'm generally a fan of Samsung and will continue to buy other Samsung products (after careful research - but I won't buy any Samsung appliances because no matter how good they might be, in practice, they do not come with a warranty). I can't remember all of the problems I've had with this unit, but the above are enough. My advice is NOT to buy this. I would also be extremely wary of other Samsung units that may share elements of this design, parts and may come from the same factory. If you do buy this, purchase a third party warranty so you don't have to go through Samsung to get repairs. If you only have the Samsung warranty/support, you really have nothing at all. Caveat Emptor!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor interior layout The interior layout is badly designed. There are no shelves in the main section that can take a gallon container or typical juice container. A shelf has to be removed or the shelf that slides in half needs to be used at half size. Either option reduces storage. A shelf on the door can handle gallons and typical juice size but it is limited to what it can hold. I prefer the larger items on a main shelf where it's colder and where it is easier access for kids. I prefer smaller items on the door where they are easier to see and don't get buried in the back of a shelf. Another poor design is that the drawer stop allows the drawers to be pulled out half way. It's a counter depth fridge so the drawers are shallow anyway. Usually have to pull the drawer over the stops to really get inside the drawer for something the size of a container of strawberries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I wanted This fridge fits into my tiny (100 sq. ft.) kitchen just right. The fact that I could find a 22 cubic ft. fridge that was counter depth (true counter depth, only the doors extend past) was wonderful. I left an opening 36 in. wide and it slid right into place with about1/4 in. to spare. It looks sleek with the smooth doors, but fingerprints could be a problem if you have little ones or a messy husband . The inside is bright and I love having a drawer for fruits and another for veggies as well as a nice sized one for meats and cheese. It has only two issues that I've found, one would be my husband's fingerprints and the other is the loud whistle when the ice tray is filling up. When the tray was filling up the bin for the first time it was very annoying, but now that the bin is mostly full, we only hear it occasionally and it's not so bad. One of those things that I think came from moving the entire icemaker into the door ( and I love having the extra freezer space). No buffer like when it's in the very back of the freezer. I have to say I'm very glad I bought it!

The outside is very difficult to keep looking clean. If you wipe it with a wet or soapy cloth it streaks. A dry cloth does not get streaks and smears off- even those from a clean wet cloth. Stainless settle cleaner makes it look great, until someone touches it, and then it looks smeared or spltched. The drawers of the refrigerator and freezerdo not open more than about 5 inches and it is difficult to get most things into or out of the, or even open them to look for things. The drawers are each made in three pieces, which do not come apart, and food gets between the pieces, making the drawers impossible to clean. The manual says put all food in the drawers in airtight packages, which is great for a single obsessive adult, but if there are children around, things get spilled and put away imperfectly. I will never buy another Samsung refrigerator and deeply regret buying this one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Total failure after only 9 months We bought this unit in early 2014 and it was more than 2 grand. It's now 9 months later and it's not cooling whatsoever. I am calling Samsung factory service tomorrow and I hope they will be able to fix it quickly as going without a refrigerator is a bear - and it's Thanksgiving week no less! I am really disappointed that we are having this problem on such a new appliance. We typically keep our appliance for a decade or more. Our stove is 22 years old. Washer and dryer are 14 years old. Our last fridge was about 14 years old when it failed. Seems like appliances are just not built to last like they used to be. This is my first major appliance from Samsung - and I think it will be my last. Anxious to see how they handle the repair - that will be help me decide for certain.

Finally the air stopped circulating in order to cool the inside. The cost to fix it was going to be close to $900-1000. Because the space in our kitchen only accommodates a counter-depth appliance, our choices were slim and expensive. We opted to get the newer version of the same fridge. Our hope is that we get 9-10+ more years of carefree cooling with this one as well. We've had it for one month....so far, so good.

I looked and looked for a counter depth refrigerator and this one fit perfect. BUT, after six years the freezer stopped working and then three months later the refrigerator also stopped working. I had a tech come out and he said it was the compressor and evaporator system and it would cost a lot to fix. We ordered the parts, but then they were not correct. After several months trying to get it fixed I decided it wasn't worth it, so I am now trying to find another refrigerator. DO NOT BUY THIS IT WILL NOT LAST.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good and bad points As a point of comparison, we bought this to replace a 12-year-old GE side by side that stopped working. The Samsung fridge temperature is usually higher (on the bottom shelf; roughly mid fridge) than the set temperature. We had to decrease the fridge thermostat two degrees (to 35) from the default to keep it less than 40 degrees Farenheit. It seems to swing 4 or 5 degrees. We left energy saving turned on. During initial cleaning (per recommendations) I dropped one drawer an inch onto the sink and the corner broke into several small pieces. I was able to keep using the drawer until Samsung sent a replacement (kudos to Samsung). The drawers are made of a clear, brittle plastic that's not as tough as the old fridge. Our fridge has a slight paint chip under the dispensing area. I don't know whether it came that way or happened during cleaning. Samsung would not send touch-up paint and said the paint isn't warranted. This was on the day we received the fridge! They said I could send the fridge back to the store. This part of the customer support experience was very poor. The ice maker works notably better than the old fridge. The maker is in the door and is vertically oriented so the ice appears to flow out more easily than our old fridge. In addition, you can lift the ice container out of the freezer to dump it into another container or a cooler. (I did this when disposing of the required two loads of ice before use, before I discovered pieces of plastic and metal in the ice chute. I guess you're supposed to run the throw-away ice through the dispenser to clear it. Still, I recommend checking the chute before using ice the first time!) We have a counter 12" from the right side of the fridge that prevents the fridge door from opening 180 degrees -- it opens about 135 degrees (which seems like plenty except for the drawers). This prevents the drawers from opening all the way, although we get about 4.5" of access. The fridge has three drawers instead of two in our old fridge. We're still adjusting to this. The fridge is white on the front, sides, and top. The sides (and top???) are textured. The front is glossy. It looks nice, but we're afraid to put anything on it (like fridge magnets) or brush against it because of apparent paint frailty. I would really worry if we had kids or pets. The handle is glossy white, which is easier to clean than the textured finish on our old fridge's handles. I can't really speak to the energy efficiency. Our electric usage hasn't increased, but we're in the non-cooling, non-heating season, so it's hard to compare. It doesn't sound like it runs as much as the old one. Overall, there's good and bad points compared to the old fridge. At twice the price (of our old fridge), it doesn't seem like a good value, but value should be judged relative to comparable current models, and I'm not really qualified to do that. As to recommending this product: I would recommend it to someone willing to accept the shortcomings. Knowing what I know now, I might still choose the same fridge -- the choices of side-by-side "counter depth" fridges in white was limited.

Bought this exact same fridge 2 times, and each time it stopped cooling entirely. First time was outside of any warranty. Second time we bought it again because the Sealed System (system that cools) had an expanded 5 year warranty, so we decided to risk it. NOT worth it. No authorized repair in our area (though we live in a very large, populated, area). Told to pay out of pocket for repair and they'd reimburse us. To do the full repair on the order some line items are apparently not covered under their limited description of a "sealed system". So... unless you want to risk not getting fully reimbursed for the repair, and dealing with months without a fridge (ordering parts takes FOREVER), do NOT buy this or any other Samsung appliance. I am really really frustrated with the company and the situation. We are out $400 without any recourse since they don't cover diagnostic fees, sales tax, or the handful of parts that were part of the sealed system repair but not covered. Really really unhappy overall. Awful that you get told to get the repair and they will reimburse you, and then after the fact they can't do anything about only reimbursing you for a partial amount. UGH. NEVER buying a Samsung product again and recommend you don't either!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Precise cold, digital inverter compressor, but vibrates badly. This is a product with too many features and some design flaws. But it does keep food very precisely cold, and the lighting is great, as are the shelves and storage. Best of all, it fits the hole I had-- a counter-depth install with a door arch on one 29-inch deep side wall. I do wish it had more shelf positions. The ice maker creates noise but no worse than any other fridge I have owned. The drawers do only pull out 5 inches, but you can lift them up to get them out more so you can get a head of lettuce in. The ice maker does seem to deliver crushed ice when you have selected cubes but it works after stopping and restarting. There are internet reports of this fridge stopping cooling while displaying set points instead of true temps after it gets a brief power outage. I have had a 2-second outage and this model seems to keep working fine. The stainless front really shows fingerprints and I will probably take a roller and latex paint to it. Get white. It does fit next to the counter but was an inch too high so I have to hack up the top cabinet that it interferes with. Only when it was on the way did a Samsung representative call and note that they recommend keeping it 2 inches from the rear wall. Heck, nothing will fit in that case. Sides are bowed out. The biggest design flaw is related to a very important feature, their digital inverter compressor. This means they can run the compressor at different speeds to vary the amount of cooling. Unfortunately the thermo engineers never bothered to tell the cabinet engineers, so some of those speeds make the entire fridge vibrate and hum. I got mine to quiet down by shoving the side hard against the counter top. The vibration would fill the whole house, and was much worse with the freezer on “boost” mode. It got better when the ice-maker filled up. They also have a default “eco” mode that must run the compressor slower. Well, they warn you that if there is condensation on the doors, you should take it off eco mode. See, that way they can get a low energy usage rating with marginal cooling in the eco mode, and then to get an actual refrigerator you set it to power-sucking mode. I took it off eco mode immediately. There are enough bad reviews of Samsung refrigerators, 1402 on one site, that I figure it is best to keep this thing in its high-cost comfort zone. The real concern I have is reliability. There is that internet site that has 1400 complaints about Samsung fridges. Even worse, after I had bought this fridge, an article came out in the NY Times, “Relying on Product Reviews? Knowing How a Company Treats Its Customers Is Just as Valuable”. This was a horror story about how Samsung apparently does not care about its customers. I knew something was up when I told the installer that I thought Samsung had good engineering. He had that look that said “I think you are an idiot but I don't want to hurt your feelings.” He mentioned a lot of problems with Samsung ovens, like the NYT article, and said that for refrigerators, Maytag and GE seemed OK. So I am going to make two big Styrofoam wedges to jam this Samsung into the opening and keep it from vibrating. Then I will just wait. The ice maker seems to work, and I love how precisely cold this thing is. If it lasts 5 years I will call it a victory and pray that goes 10. If it starts to have problems, I will suffer through a fix or two, but once it starts to be a disharmonious conflict heck-ride, I will just junk it and buy the cheapest top-freezer that GE makes. No features, no problems. What I wanted was a top-freezer fridge with no ice maker, but dual evaporators. None of them are counter depth, and all of them seem to have the same architecture as the Maytag that failed. None have dual evaporators like this Samsung. I had a Maytag in a previous house that had the ice maker just start to spit cubes on the floor. Then it died, but at least it was 15 years old. I did a lot of research before buying this refrigerator. The Maytag in this house was only 5 years old, would run all the time and not get below 44 degrees. It also made horrific banging noises as the metal evaporator tray expanded and contracted against the plastic freezer interior. So I would not buy Maytag or their parent Whirlpool or Kitchen Aid. Consumer Reports say Electrolux has a 45% repair rate, so they are out and so is their brand Frigidaire. Really that only left GE, Samsung, and LG for me to look at. Bosch was out since my dad fought in WWII, and Bosch seem to have complexity problems as well. Kenmore is just a re-badge of a real manufacturer, but you can sometimes see what they really are. All these modern fridges are feature-laden, so expect them to last 5 years. Complexity is why Space Shuttles blow up, and complexity is why your fridge will fail in 5 years. An ice maker halves the reliability and any chips or computers halves it again. This Samsung has Wi-Fi to talk to your Smart Meter. I would rather it work for 20 years than be Astroboy. All we want is a box full of cold and instead we get more programmer puzzles and over-engined monstrosities. If you really want to punish yourself, buy one of those French door refrigerators with an ice-maker in the door. That is a complete absurdity. Good luck with your fridge, I will let you know how this one holds out. Home Depot was fantastic and well worth the slight premium over getting a fridge from a well-known outlet store online. Samsung called twice and Home Depot did as well. Over and over you see reviews where people complain about the fridge but praise Home Depot for taking it back. Installers were contract workers, but nice guys that did OK. With modern appliances, you want a good relationship with a local store, even though I bought this online on the Home Depot website. It came in only three days.

Very disappointed in the interior design of the unit. The plastic components are cheap and inferior. Unless these components are some type of space age plastic, we fully expect some cracking and breaking in the future. The biggest problem are the interior drawers. Not only are they cheaply made, they only open halfway. That became apparent when my wife tried to insert a head of broccoli and it wouldn't fit. She had to cut it in half before it would go in. The bottom vegetable drawer comes off the track nearly every time its opened. Some of the positives are the exterior display and the very nice integrated ice maker. We also like the LED lighting. It's bright and illuminates the entire interior. It also runs very quiet, which is expected. Unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positives. I would not recommend the product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible product, horrible service, horrible company. We have had this fridge for 2 years, and it... Horrible product, horrible service, horrible company. We have had this fridge for 2 years, and it broke - it stopped cooling things completely. That is bad enough - for a $1600 fridge, you would really hope it would last longer than 2 years. What is worse is that Samsung doesn't actually service these units even if they are under warranty - they contract out those services to third party repair shops around the country. Therefore, if this thing breaks, you are at the mercy of the service center that they pawn off your unit to. That service center is responsible for having someone out to check out the unit within 48 hours. Not to actually fix it, just to come take a look at it and diagnose it. At that point in time, they assess what parts/service/tools they need and will schedule a time to come finally (hopefully) fix it. They do not work weekends - therefore, if your fridge breaks Friday night like mine did, no one will get to it until Tuesday, at which point they will diagnose it and tell you that they have none of the parts or tools they need to fix it. So you can expect that whatever food you have on the fridge will be spoiled, and that you will be without a fridge for almost an entire week. If you think that calling Samsung corporate will do anything - it won't. They completely wash their hands of these issues and blame the service center for everything. The reality is that Samsung is cheap, negotiated a poor service level agreement with their service centers and as a result, you will have a unit that will be broken for a long time before someone fixes it. I would give this 0 stars if I could, but that is not an option.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible product - DO NOT BUY!!! Samsung doesn't stand by their products. This refrigerator broke down after less than a year after purchase. It was a nightmare trying to get it repaired. Just two months later, it's broken again. And again it's been like trying to lift heaven and earth to get it repaired.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful fridge! We have had this fridge for 5 years and I love it! It is stylish, sleek, very quiet and roomy. Others have had problems with the drawers not opening enough, but they do extend beyond the initial drawer catch ( that's how you are able to take them out and clean them). The ice maker is slow to refill but that is my only complaint. I am very happy with this purchase and would purchase Samsung products again.
