Questions & Answers

IS THISPLYWOOD GOOD FOR KITCHEN SUBFLOOR?

IS THISPLYWOOD GOOD FOR KITCHEN SUBFLOOR?
Asked by: KITCHEN2460
If your house is a trailer or old mobile home, you could use this... I would never use it, it's too thin and real subfloor is tongue and groove... Spend the money to buy real subfloor, and use lots of subfloor adhesive and screw the heck out of it with really good decker screws, preferably the TORX stainless steel 3-1/2 screws they sell at Home Depot. Never cut corners on anything critical, and subfloor definitely is critical. If you don't care that the floor moves when you walk on it, squeaks like crazy and has nails popping all over the place, feel free to nail the thin stuff down with common nails... If you want your house to be nice and solid, spend a few bucks more... It's really not much money, and not much extra time to do it right so that you never have to go back and fix it again.

No, unless you like splinters in your bread. Get a piece of board with a melamine laminate surface.

I recently purchased two 2'x4'x 1/2" boards to make drawer sides for a shop cabinet project. Upon cutting the drawer sides to length and width, I stacked them in two piles side by side. Eight pieces cut from the one board and eight pieces cut from the other. I noticed at least a 1/4" difference in height between the two piles. Not good. When I measured board thickness of the pieces with a digital caliper, the pieces in the first pile measured 0.46 to 0.52 and the pieces in the second pile measured 0.51 to 0.58! All over sized with little consistency. This makes cutting tight-fitting dados for the drawers a real issue. I didn't measure moisture content but I suspect it would be high and the reason for the oversized and inconsistent thicknesses. Both panels however, were flat and free from obvious defects. Next time, I'll take my calipers with me and take measurements before I purchase. Buyer beware!!

Home Depot cut the board to size making my job even easier. The plywood is strong and is paintable. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, because it is a bit expensive for such a small board.
