Works. Here’s why.
The people who write these off as 1 star reviews likely never tested one and apparently don’t understand that big industry relies on this principle.
The stronger the magnetic field, the longer the water flows through the magnetic field, the more pronounced the effect.

Expensive but worth it
I installed the Scalewatcher 4 in about 30 minutes with no problems. I just followed the instructions. Because the unit was installed approx. 36” from my pipe coming from the well, I was able to make more wraps than the required minimum and I understand this could increase performance. The unit is located in a weather protected pump house.
This is not like a regular water softener that uses salt. There is no slick feeling.
The minerals remain in the water- they just don’t stick to plumbing and appliances. Our house is a new construction and we have been using the well water since May 2019. In that short time there was a heavy build up of calcium and lime on every faucet, shower head and water using appliance. In November I cleaned everything with white vinegar before installation and have not had any build up since. I do have to wipe a clay like residue from inside my tea kettle but that is better than the crusty build up that I had before. I plan to add a whole house sediment filter in the future to see if that helps with the residue. But IT IS NOT forming a crusty build up so I am happy with this device so far.

There is no scientific basis for this item. Magnetic fields do not affect ions in water.

This process uses electrical current to convert calcium and magnesium ions (the foundations for scale) into harmless molecular clusters that are too large to bond with other molecules, such as soap and other substances, in the water. As a result, minerals can’t cling to surfaces as they would with untreated water.

I'm a 35 year master plumber , this is a total scam and will not do anything for your water hardness or anything else but cost you the price of this gimmick item. RUN!!!

This is a snake oil scam
Magnetic fields do not affect minerals in any way. Minerals don't stick to a magnet, they have no interaction with a magnetic field. You'd be just as well off painting a cross on the pipe, it would do you as much good. People who think this works are suffering from "I can't have wasted all this money, it must work!" It doesn't and it can't. A magnetic field around a copper pipe will induce a current in the pipe, but all that will do is warm the pipe a tiny amount. If that removed minerals then you'd have no problems with limescale in hot water pipes. Home Depot should be ashamed of themselves.
