Questions & Answers

after leaving, how do you lock the door?

I want to put this lock on a gated area at the rear of our building. after people leave this gated area, will the gate lock behind them? or is some action needed to lock the gate? It seemed that other said you have to manually lock. I am afraid that the residents may not bother to do this, which will defeat the purpose of having a gated area. Is there a model that just locks behind you? We have one on our front gate, but I don't want a handle or knob, since the rear area is off an alley, and we have had some trouble with vandals applying downward pressure on knobs to break and gain access.
Asked by: redrobin
Yes, you have to manually lock this model. Press the Schlage Key and turn bolt. No need to key in code

does the keypad require a battery?

Asked by: Doris
Yes a 9 volt. accessed from the inside. I have a 2 yr old unit. It "chirps" when battery needs to be changed, to avoid a lock-out.

BUTTONS WEAR?

Has any reports been submitted about the buttons being worn from constant use so much that it is possible to guess the code?
Asked by: Tanya
I have purchased three of these locks and the two that are protected show no wear. The one in the Arizona sun no longer works and needs to be replaced. The buttons curled and required several tries to get the door open. It lasted for over 5 years.

Under "Specifications" - what does backlit mean?

Numbers on key pad do not light up; it is difficult to enter the code numbers in the dark since the numbers don't light up. I am not certain if the key pad is supposed to light up when the code numbers are pressed.
Asked by: Changeup
When the key pad is touched the numbers light up.

This lock was easy for me to install, I had to bore out the door a bit for better clearance. I also had to re-key the cylinder to fit my existing locks this was a bit more challenging but not impossible, if you need this done I suggest you take the lock to a pro. The instructions are easy to follow, install was fast. Lock works great. I do not recommend this if you have small children that like to play with things like this! I like everything about this lock. I don't carry keys when I am working on the property, my house is always locked, this is nice for when I need to get in the back door. This lock exceeds my expectations.

In fact I had 5 of them between my daughters house and mine. I bought a new house and googled the best rated door lock and I had just put this type in another lady’s house a year ago and never had to go back for any reason. This is a much better lock because the only thing you hear is the sound of the inside mechanism for 1 second. The rest of the lock is manual. The other is totally dependent on the battery. Yeah it is a little easier but if I get so old that I can’t turn a very simple handle, I’ll be living somewhere in an assisted living home. PERFECT!!!!!

This is my 5th one installed and purchased and all have been great except for this one seems to not fit solidly, It still functions but I cannot screw in the screws tight and the cover is loose.

The code works fine and you can easily add or eliminate them. After 4 wrong attempts it deactivates for about 30 seconds, but still doesn't unlock. Great lock!

Looks nice and works great.... no more keys to get lost (we have kids and dog sitters, etc) ! The finish looks very high end. We definitely plan to get the matching hardware/handles to go with it now (you can see our old nobs and handles...yuck), once we paint our doors. The metal piece in pic is from a previous issue with our door, it does not come with item. The whole piece fit right into the space left by the bolt lock that was there and was switched out and working within minutes. We Love it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Rubber Buttons Warn After 1 Week I installed this a week ago. Installation and function is great. The problem I have is that the rubber buttons are already warn and cracking. This was installed for my 85 year old uncle that continuously drops his keys and can't pick them up or fails to actually lock the door so wind would blow the door open. So far switching to a dead bolt only and key pad have solved those problems. I will likely be calling the manufacturer for a replacement set of buttons.

You only use the key as an emergency tool, if the batteries were to die. SO, you only enter with the code, which means you have to keep the key with you or leave it outside somewhere. The rotating thumb knob is to lock and unlock the deadbolt, after you have either entered the code (unlock) or hit the "code" button (lock). As long as the deadbolt lines up with the hole you should be good to go.
