Answer This Question

A:  I believe it recommends modified underneath and an unmodified on top.

A:  DITRA can have tile set using Schluter branded thinset products. Please review page 21 of the DITRA Installation Handbook which goes over acceptable thinset requirements. https://sccpublic.s3-external-1.amazonaws.com/sys-master/images/h28/hef/9377062715422/DITRA%20Installation%20Handbook.pdf

      Answer This Question

A:  You shouldn’t need to. There are other products available for wall waterproofing and you don’t need uncoupling properties on walls.

      by|Feb 20, 2023

A:  No. You should use a 1/2” cement board that can be fastened to the wall studs in order to support the weight of the wall tile.

This product performs as advertised. It makes a good uncoupling membrane, easy to install. I put it on a plywood subfloor. Be sure and follow instruction as to what type thinset you use, with wood subfloor you use modified on floor, then unmodified thinset to set tile.

Michigan weather torture-test proven! We installed Ditra on our concrete slab of a front porch in July of 2017 as a base for tiling. Our pipe-dream was that the tile would not crack or dis-bond during the deep-freeze of Michigan's 6-months of winter. If you're not familiar with Michigan weather, it has the most-extreme temperature swings of any place on the planet; sub-zero in the winter, approaching 100 degrees F on some days in the summer. Our tile has survived the worst that Michigan weather can bring and there has not been a single issue. No cracked grout, no cracked tiles. I am impressed. Follow the instructions as I did, and this product will live up to the claims.

Fairly straight forward to use and very easy to maneuver and install. Follow the directions. Biggest miss for us was mortar curling up along the edges. Needs to be flat thought and through

I laid marble tiles on my second bathroom with HardieBacker, it look nice and has the strong feeling when walk on it. I came across with the Ditra with all the good reviews, so I tried the Ditra on my master bedroom because it's lighter and easy to cut. But I am not happy with the result, due to the second story wood subfloor, the marble tiles are not evenly level and feel weak on Ditra when walk on it.

                    shower walls with ditra
taking apart an existing non-functioning shower to the studs, i re-built it with ext ply (instead of cement board), fiberglassed the bottom 1' walls (and shower pan) then covered the walls with thin-set, applied the ditra, then thin-set the tiles. method was far more flexible, easy to use, cut with just scissors. tiles adhered perfectly. Not the 'contractor method' i know, but then neither was the tiling.

Great product if used correctly. Highly recommend if setting large format tile over a plywood floor.
