Overview

The DH5MA is an uncoupling and waterproofing membrane designed to secure Ditra-Heat heating cable in place. Ditra-Heat provides uncoupling to neutralize shear stresses between the substrate and the tile covering to prevent cracked tile and grout. The cut-back stud structure of the Ditra-Heat membrane holds the heating cable in place without the use of clips or fasteners. It also eliminates the need for a self-leveling compound which minimizes the assembly thickness and allows for quicker installation.

Questions & Answers

Does it plug to the electrical outlet? And can it installed to the laminate floor?

Asked by: Rhet
This is intended to be wired into an electrical box with a floor heat thermostat and sensors installed. It is not simply plugged into an outlet. Installation under ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tile is recommended. Laminate is not recommended over ditra-heat.

Does the membrane add insulating value or provide moisture protection?
Asked by: Bubba
Absolutely no insulating value. It is a plastic material but I'm not sure it would work as a moisture barrier.

I plan on installing this in a bathroom. Do you have to cover the entire bathroom floor, including the shower area with this sheet or can you just cover the areas where you want to heat? Just want to see if if will create floor leveling or waterproof issues if not using this membrane in the entire bathroom.
Asked by: Min
You can use other schluter membrane, such as kerdi, to transition into ditra-heat. If overlapped and installed properly there should not be a waterproofing issue. As long as you transition in an appropriate spot (shower curb, pan, etc) then it should be okay and height differences wouldn’t be an issue. Though, it may be easier to use ditra-heat throughout to maintain the uncoupling benefits.

membrane sheet not adhering well to cement board

Applied thin set over clean cement board but is loose in several areas. Can these sheets be screwed down? Is there another, more permanent way to attach it to the cement board?
Asked by: DJ
It could be an issue with the type of thinset mortar you used. It was, and still may be, not recommended to install ditra-heat over cement board. Sounds crazy right? Apparently there were lots of issues with it. However, if you do, as many people have, I would recommended wiping down the cement board with a damp sponge just prior to putting on the thinset mortar. Also, it is difficult to get a good answer on whether to use unmodified, or modified between cement board and ditra-heat. Research both manufacturers and form your own opinion. If yours didn’t work the first time, maybe try the other type.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best product for heated tile floors. Prep work is key. There are no mortars on the market, modified or otherwise that are rated for applying Ditra on plywood or OSB. If you read the labels, they all want an underlayment like Durock, which defeats the whole purpose of using Ditra! Schluter says it's okay to put down their product using polymer modified mortar over plywood and OSB. Who do you believe? I guess I'll see if I just wasted a pile of $$ once we walk on this floor for a few years. I sanded my OSB with 80 grit sand paper on an orbital sander and carefully cleaned all dust before applying a polymer modified mortar and setting the Ditra. It seems to have stuck very well. Make sure your mortar is not mixed too dry or it will not soak and adhere to the fiber backing on the Ditra. All in all, easy to cut to size and install. Prep is key. Would like solid answers from Schluter about plywood and OSB applications.
