Product Overview

The DH5MA is an uncoupling and waterproofing membrane designed to secure Ditra-Heat heating cable in place. Ditra-Heat provides uncoupling to neutralize shear stresses between the substrate and the tile covering to prevent cracked tile and grout. The cut-back stud structure of the Ditra-Heat membrane holds the heating cable in place without the use of clips or fasteners. It also eliminates the need for a self-leveling compound which minimizes the assembly thickness and allows for quicker installation.
  • Made of polypropylene
  • Sheet dimensions are 3 ft. 2-5/8 in. x 2 ft. 7-3/8 in.
  • Covers 8.4 sq. ft.
  • Designed for use with Ditra-Heat heating cables
  • Sold by the sheet
  • Membrane is 1/4 in. thick
  • Installs with thinset

I wouldn't do that. Fastening with screws would not let the top layer of the membrane to float freely from the bottom layer. This is the concept of the membrane.

How is the Ditra mat secured to the plywood. What type of adhesive do you use

Asked by Dave October 4, 2018

I was at work when the mat was put down. I am not sure if adhesive was used or not. It appears that they applied it over the existing floor covering. I am very satisfied with this setup, and it works very well. I would recommend this set up. I would also recommend the installers. They were wonderful and very efficient.

Does the membrane add insulating value or provide moisture protection?

Absolutely no insulating value. It is a plastic material but I'm not sure it would work as a moisture barrier.

It would be easiest to use this mat everywhere and only install the heated cord where you want heat. The mat is not heated. It is designed to hold the heat cord.

Does it plug to the electrical outlet? And can it installed to the laminate floor?

This is intended to be wired into an electrical box with a floor heat thermostat and sensors installed. It is not simply plugged into an outlet. Installation under ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone tile is recommended. Laminate is not recommended over ditra-heat.

NO, you will have buckling. Thinset is the warranty installation method and you must apply evenly so you do not have buckles. One of the reasons that heated flooring costs so much from contractors is that it must be installed correctly. Imagine installing all the wires, underlayment, and tile only to find that it does not work when you turn it on?

The Ditra-Heat membrane sheets are great to work with. Since there area I was using it was smaller, it didn't make sense to purchase an entire roll. One benefit I found in the sheets was that they are relatively flat and you don't have to worry about them uncurling from the floor while I imagine a roll may have that issue on the ends. The membrane was easy to cut to size, I just used a utility knife and a straight edge. I was able to do cutouts for the toilet flange and the floor vent without any issues. It installed over plywood great. It makes installing the heating cable a breeze as well. The length of cable I purchased ended up being just shy of what I wanted to use, but I was able to reconfigure it a few different times to figure out the best pattern to maximize my heating area. The thinset goes on easily over the membrane and you don't need to worry too much about damaging the cables with the trowel. Lastly, when you use this with the Kerdi-band, you have a waterproof floor, which is fantastic for a bathroom. I will definitely use this again for any future floor heating projects.

Product was shipped nicely and arrived fairly quickly. HD was not the cheapest out there but they are about half of amazon for some reason. The product is fairly easy to lay but very tough to get them all to line up perfectly if you want to use the grids to ensure your tile is remaining straight. Better to use other means to ensure your tile job is running perfectly straight. The slight misaligning was no trouble for the heated floor cable.

Great product!
This worked extremely well for my floor heat wires! Provided a puzzle like pathway to run the heater wore with worrying about nicking the wire with your trowel! I would recommend to anyone putting in a heated floor on backer or concrete.

Some of the sheets had a slight curl and wouldn't lay flat. I used some plywood to hold them down until the thinset took hold.Other than that great invention.
