Answer

I would only use this product with a pure seed mix. If the seed mix already has fertilizer, this will likely be counterintuitive, and prevent the seeds from germinating.

Is this a 10-30-10 fertilizer?

Hi Ray, This Scotts fertilizer is rated as 24-25-4. Southern Ag makes a 10-30-10 fertilizer.

Hi DIYgardener, This particular product is not for sale in the State of Florida. Environmental regulations prohibit the use of it in your geographic area. Home Depot sells other starter fertilizers such as those from Vigoro that you might want to check out.

If you have spread seeds, I would use the starter, wait until the seeds germinate well, and with good root penetration before spreading additional fertilizer.

Answer

CookiePuss, our WaterSmart Plus grass seed includes fertilizer in the coating so no fertilizer is needed until 2-4 weeks after seeding. If the seed you are using does not contain a fertilizer the Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food For New Grass can be used at the time of seeding.

How long is zoysia sod considered new? How ling should i use the starter and when should i graduate to the next fertilizer and what do you revommend?

Thank you for inquiring about Scott's Turf Builder Starter Brand Lawn Fertilizer. Although it feeds for up to 6 weeks because of nutrient needs of new grass for most areas, reapply in 2-4 weeks. This product contains a high amount of phosphorous which is needed for the initial seed germination and root development. 4-6 weeks after seeding the seedlings are typically developed enough that they no longer need that additional phosphorous. Is it OK to apply this to new sod in the summer, or should I wait until Fall?

Yes apply to new sod or seed as soon as possible. By the fall, you should be able to use the Scott’s Turfbuilder seasonal application. Good luck with getting the new grass thick and green.

Dag, I am no expert but have been using this Scotts starter fertilizer for many years and it works very well on newly SEEDED lawns. I cannot speak to plugs but if the plugs are brown and dried up, you might be wasting a pretty expensive fertilizer. Bermuda grass as a whole is very hearty and might come back, once established it is pretty hard to kill. Good Luck!

I applied it when I seeded. How long until I should fertilize again?

The starter fertilizer was purchased to apply to some new sod that was laid in the yard recently. It was easy to apply. I needed to get a quick application prior to the growing season. The grass is looking good, and I wanted to make sure that I applied the fertilizer so that I could get it going before the growing season so that I could get the grass established. It is still early in the growth season, so I didn't expect to see quick results.

Incredible
We used this on our yard in mid September when we aerated and seeded our yard. Our grass currently looks incredible! Our neighbors grass is starting to turn brown and ours in greener than ever. It is so thick and lush. We were so impressed that yesterday we but down Scott’s Winterguard Weed & Feed. So excited to see how that works - especially since chickweed started to creep in a few weeks ago!

Success so far...
I combined the Awesome and Tough Grass Seeds, applied on August 30, 2020 and along with a combination of the Scotts Starter fertilizer and Scott Turf Builder Root-Trients, fertilizing August 30, September 13 and September 27, 2020; using less than the recommended amount of fertilizer resulting in no burns; photo on the left August 30, 2020 and photo on the right October 12, 2020. The true test will be next year summer to see if this turf will hold up.

Not too shabby...
I put down Scott’s grub control the same day I put down Scott’s starter fertilizer. I am currently growing grass in my back yard and thought why not try to spruce up the front yard. I watered every morning for over 2 weeks. I am noticing greener grass even on the sod on my devil strip. This summer in Ohio we had multiple days with 90 degree days and I was able to grow grass. I gave this a 4/5 because honestly, it didn’t work fast enough in the heat and I had to water it for a few weeks.

Very disappointed. Less than half of the seed has germinated. We followed the label directions to the letter. We contacted Scott's regarding the guarantee and have not heard anything back. We would not recommend this product at all.

I planted this grass 17 days ago. On the bag it says, grows 70% thicker and 35% quicker. I made sure to water it daily. The grass has still not germinated even though the bag says it will, within 10 days.

We are sorry that you did not get the results you expected from Scotts Turf Builder Starter Brand Fertilizer. This product does not contain grass seed, it is just a fertilizer to use when seeding to help the seed germinate better. Get Ready To Mow
Maryland had an excessive amount of rain in 2017-2018 which led to a lot of soil damage and grass damage. My usual fall planting with soil amendments worked OK but in Maryland you get used to planting seed every fall. I saw Scott's Turf Builder Starter for new grass and gave it a try in the fall of 2018. Results were good but winter set in and growth stopped. I then went out on a limb and tried a winter sowing along with an application of Scott's Starter food. I didn't expect much of a success rate but as soon as Spring showed up, my grass growth exploded. Grass grew where I thought is was impossible and grew it did. I don't know what Scott's secret is but this stuff works, almost too good. I usually mow once a week but now have been mowing twice a week. Expensive but it sure delivers.
