Questions & Answers

What kind of grass does this seed grow, and does it continue to grow in the summer and winter

Asked by: Babycakes
Scotts sell a tall fescue mix for sun and shade and there is a different bag that sells a mix of creeping red fescue and rye with some bluegrass. Just read the label. On this Home Depot website they seem to be combining all the questions and answers for Scott seed products into one Q&A. You go to review one seed product and it ends up posting in a different seed Q&A so my advice is not all these answers are applicable to the product you are asking the question about!

can i use a spreader with this product and will it grow if it is just spread on top of the ground

Asked by: Action
I would not try to grow this or any grass seed by just throwing it on top of the ground. Rake the area, lightly break up the soil, and spread the seed. Then when it rains or when you lightly spray it with the hose the loose soil will become muddy and will cover the seed with a light layer of mud. I think that's the secret.

I am in Zone 5 in Massachusetts- Is it too late to seed? We could have our first frost in about 20 days.... Thank you-

Asked by: MJ
For best results you will want soil temperature to be between 75 falling to around 70 and or approximately 30 - 45 days before soil reaches 55 when it will go into winter dormancy. You were likely a little late in your area.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This grass seed did not grow in good. I planted these seeds in my backyard end of April 2019. It did not grow in fully, leaving many bare brown soil spots after two months went by. Then just recently in July 2019 we had a heat wave with temps in the high 90's degrees with real feels of 110 degrees here in NYC area. The Scotts sun and shade grass is dying out now turning brown. What gives? My yard is small and mostly shaded by trees with some sun. The grass was green and seemed to be filling in well during June, but now end of July the grass is dying!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looked Good For aAwhile Purchased 3 20 lb. bags last summer/early fall (2018) to sow a new lawn. Germination was excellent and it looked amazing until the summer of 2019. The grass is doing better in shade to partial shade areas, but in full sun the grass is dead or dying. It can't take the summer temps (usually 2 months of temps in the high 90's into the triple digits). Scott's Turf Builder Summerguard did not help. I plan on spraying herbicide and replacing the entire lawn with St. Augustine grass.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from nothing happened I purchased above product and starter fertilizer and planted it on Aug 28,2019. I also covered the seed with 8 bales of straw to help the ground stay moist. My neighbor planted a different grass seed a week and a half later than i did. My grass at best today is one inch high and very thin and my neighbor's is 4 inches high. Our soils are the same but he did not use a starter fertilizer or straw. I was very dissapointed with your product as I have started 3 lawns in my yard and have never had a problem in past years. I have used Estate sun and shade seed on my yard starts in previous years and have had good results. I have heard your commercials about having the best yard in the neighborhood, So I used yours. I am sorry I changed to your seed as all the yards I planted I did it the same way as I did this year.

I planted these sun & shade seeds this year to fill in bare spots in my back yard. This was at the end of April 2019. By start of June 2019 the seedlings were starting to grow but in patches leaving many brown soil bare spots. As the summer came and hot weather started with several days in the 90 degrees range, this grass seemed to stop growing and started turning brown and dying! The bares spots I originally wanted to fill in are again all brown soil and dead yellow grass! These seeds either were old and weak or Scotts claim is false. Do I get my money back for the 3 ibs bag I bought? I am attaching pics of before and after how it looked and looks now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product I used a hand spreader to apply this to my bare yard for initial seeding and it worked quite well. I had to apply a second bag after a couple of weeks due to bare spots, most of those spots are filling in but I still have some work to do, considering this seed is not meant to fill in a brand new yard I think it did a great job. I live in a brand new neighborhood and I was the only person to not do either hydro seed or sod and my lawn looks as good, if not better than others who hydro seeded, plus it was less expensive. Seeding in my area of the country is not easy considering the high winds and inconsistent weather. One day it will be 35 degrees and the next it can be 85 degrees but I still managed the seed to grow with reasonable expectations. I have to mention that I did follow the directions as closely as possible, I had a fence up to block any wind, my sprinklers ran on a timer with no dry times/spots and I applied it during early spring when it didn't get overwhelmingly hot.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wasted Money ! After reading more than I care to about grass seed , I thought I would try Scotts Turf Builder grass seed . It had been years since I had planted any grass and the local produced seed was no longer available . It was called Northwest Playground mix . When I used it I did almost zero prep on our glacial gravel except for removing larger rocks . And I watered it occasionally . I had to mow it in just over 3 weeks . This time I prepped by triple tilling down about 6" and then putting a top coat of 3 way top soil down . After over seeding and raking it in , I watered twice a day for the first 3 weeks and then went to a early morning soaking . Temps were perfect with highs between 60-85 . I am now about 6 weeks since I planted and other than some volunteer grass , only a few of Scotts seeds germinted . The only good thing is that the blue color kept most of the birds from feeding on it . Now I "get to" start over with someone elses seed , not what I wanted to have to do .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked for Me This product worked well for me. I chose this for an overseeding project because I wanted greener, fuller looking grass. The pictures are 12 days apart - starting the project in July. First, I cut the grass real low and dethatched the dead grass with an electric dethatcher, raked up everything the dethatcher brought up, used turf builder soil to fill in some spots that looked the worse, generously applied the whole bag of seed everywhere, lightly mixed the seed in the dirt with a rake, and watered twice a day (every 12 hours). It’s not perfect, but it sure has come a long way in a short time.
