About This Product

Grow a lawn that can withstand tough conditions with Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix. This mix of Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass grows long roots to access water deep in the soil, and also self repairs to fill in bare spots. Use this grass seed mix to seed a new lawn or overseed an existing lawn. For best results, apply this lawn care product when air temperatures are between 65°F and 85°F. To seed a new lawn, prep the area by raking to loosen the top layer of soil and remove any dead grass or debris to ensure seed-to-soil contact. To reseed or overseed an existing lawn, mow the lawn at the lowest setting and bag the clippings. For new lawns and overseeding, apply grass seed using a Scotts spreader at the recommended setting listed on the label. After application, lightly rake the seed into the soil to ensure seed is covered just beneath the soil surface. One 10 lb. bag of Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix has a new lawn coverage of 1,665 sq. ft. or an overseeding coverage of 5,000 sq. ft. of lawn.

Directions say to water daily for up to 3 weeks. How many minutes should I water each day? I live in Sacramento in zone 9B.

      Answer This Question

Thanks for your question about Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix. Water the lawn immediately after sowing grass seed. Keep the soil continually moist for the first 3 weeks, or until the seedlings reach 2 inches in height. We recommend watering at least twice a day (morning and evening). If temperatures are high, you may need to water 3 times (morning, evening, and afternoon).

Hi Mark! Thanks for your question. Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix should be used to seed or overseed Bluegrass, Ryegrass, or Fescue combination lawns only. This product requires full sun to light shade with at least 5-8 hours of direct or filtered sunlight per day.

          Answer This Question

Depends upon where you are, but normally you would seed when outdoor temps are between 58f-78f degrees, any lower it won't emerge, any higher and the seeds will just lay dormant and become bird food. Water heavily each morning AND late afternoon EVERY day

Will this grow in eastern Tennessee?
            ByOct 29, 2025
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Hello Randy and thank you for your question. The Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix may not germinate if the air temperature is consistently below 60°F (15°C) or above 85°F (29°C). For the best results, your soil temperature needs to be between 55-60°F (13-15.5°C). Your seedlings need about 4-6 weeks without any frost to get established. Watch out for heavy frost or freezing temperatures before your seedlings are established, as this can kill them off.

Can you use this product to dormant seed?

                Answer This Question

Hello! Thanks for your question. The best time to apply Scotts Grass Seed Drought Tolerant Mix is in the late summer to early fall when the air temperatures are between 60-80°F (15.5-27°C). In fall you need about 4-6 weeks with no frost for seedlings to become established. Frost prior to the seedlings becoming established will typically kill the seedlings. The second best time to seed is the spring. In the spring, do not apply until soil temperatures are above 55°F (13°C). In the spring it takes 2 weeks with air temperatures consistently in the 60-80°F (15.5-27°C) range for the soil to warm up enough for the seed to germinate. Soil temperatures need to be at least between 55-60°F (13-15.5°C) for seeds to germinate.

                  Not worth the price
I bought this seed on May 16, 2026, spread it and it germinated great. Looked great for about a week and then it all died. It was not from lack of water as it rained or was watered daily. To expensive to not last.

This is a good product. Considering the severe drought conditions here in Colorado this spring, it is very helpful to have grass that tolerates drought due to restrictions on watering from our HOA/Town/County.

                    Not worth it
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Easily spreaded around the yard, but overall the product didn’t work. Still had to run my sprinkler every day even though it is suppose to promote drought resistance. The bunny loves it.

We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. Germination
The seed has been the fastest to germinate out any other seeds I used before. Most germinated within a week or less.

Fast growing and very easy to care for!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We were lucky enough to get to try this amazing grass seed. You would think that it wouldn’t be so exciting, but when you see how beautiful the grass is after it’s germinated and growing, you would easily be as excited as us! We live in a high desert plain, which usually suffers from drought and water restrictions so when we tried this with the hope that we would save money by conserving water and still get to enjoy a beautiful lush green lawn, we were so happy with the results. The bag covers a very large amount of space And we were so surprised with as quickly as this began to grow. Very hardy and soft. We liked this so much. We’ve already gone out and purchased more to do our backyard. I can’t recommend this enough!

I just spread this seed last week, and it's already growing. Mid-June is not the best time to start a lawn - but since the forecast was for cooler and wetter weather I tried to repair some bare spots. The results look promising so far.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We used it to reseed some bald spots in the grass. Just follow the directions and you’re good to go! We have been getting rain where I live, which may have helped it grow!

                            Quick to grow
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used the Scotts Drought Tolerant Mix in a problem area of my lawn where grass had mostly died off, especially around a tree. The spot gets full sun most of the day with some shade from the tree, and this seed mix made a noticeable difference. It was easy to apply, had a nice texture, and the germination was impressive—new grass started coming in quickly. The area is now looking much greener, and the new grass is blending in really well with the rest of the lawn. The color is healthy, and I’m seeing consistent growth even in the tougher, drier spots. The bag was generously sized and had plenty of product for my lawn. Overall, I highly recommend this to homeowners looking for a reliable, easy-to-use seed mix that performs well under sun and drought conditions.

Good coverage. Nice to walk on.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I like this Scott’s grass seed. I used it for bare spots in my lawn. I followed directions and it had a fairly fast growing time. It filled it the spots well. It is also not too picky to walk on, which is important to us.
