Asked by Rick August 14, 2020

2nd gen may actually work properly as a smart device. I would try another brand tbh.

Does this have to be installed indoors?

Yes, unless you have an enclosure to place it in outdoors.

Yes, you can turn zones off using the GroConnect app by selecting the on/off slider for that particular zone.

My entire sprinkler system is a Toro System. Will this sprinkler timer work with my system?

Asked by Trit April 4, 2020

The Torro system is not on our list of approved or incompatible sprinkler systems, so we cannot advise otherwise. In general as a jumping off point, relays designed to drive larger pumps (> 2 hp) are less likely to work with Gro.

I have a pump for watering. Can this system be used with a pump.

Asked by Steve April 3, 2020

Thank you for your interest in Gro. Our system is compatible with most pumps. In general, relays designed to drive larger pumps (> 2 hp) are less likely to work with Gro. More information can be found at We would be happy to assist with any further questions at 855-382-5077.

All zones set to the same start time!

Whoever approved the design was not paying attention. “Changing your watering time will be applied to all zones”...are you for real? The whole reason to have more than one valve is they can be customized started at different times! That is job one of any timer!! The water pressure would not be nearly enough to support all zones simultaneously, let alone leave sought pressure for any water use in the house. Fix this!!

One BIG flaw in it’s design.
Customer review from logo
This is WIFI ONLY. Bad idea. If your GRO hub looses internet connection for a brief few seconds it typically will reconnect to the WiFi. If you loose internet service for say 5 min. It times out and will not reconnect wirelessly. And will not water anything unless it has internet connections to the server. You can not reconnect the hub unless you are standing next to the hub with Bluetooth. So let’s say you leave town for a week. The hub looses internet connection because of an internet outage. Your plants will not be watered. All of this could be solved by having the ability to connect the hub via Ethernet cable (hard wire). The hub has no Ethernet port. Issue 2: If you have set up a guest network on your wifi that should support a 2.4 connection and the GRO hub drops and other devices can connect at a faster speed the hub may not reconnect. All of this would be resolved with an Ethernet port.

It's great. Except when it's not.
I purchased this product over a year ago. I installed it, the irrigation system with controlled valves in a day or two for both my front and back yards with multiple zones. It was incredibly easy to do. This system has been wonderful with the exception of 2 things. 1. This system is wireless only. This system would be far more reliable if I could hardwire it into the router via CAT cable. The Gro hub has no ethernet port, which would seem like a no brainer. 2. The wifi is reliant on a 2.4ghz signal. So you have to know that if you only have one signal and want that signal to be strong and fast. This hub will slow your entire wifi system down and force the system into a 2.4ghz shorter wifi signal range. This issue would be eliminated with the solution pointed out in point #1. I had to open up a guest network on my wifi router since that will prioritize 2.4 devices. And the gro controller can drop the connection and have a hard time reconnecting. Other than these two issues (but important ones) this system is pretty awesome. I would still recommend the Gro. But the two issues should be pointed out a little better on the box. And if they ever have an ethernet plugin model I would like them to replace my hub for all my frustration with getting this to connect to the 5ghz network not knowing that it needed the 2.4 network.

Replace the sprinkler's controller
Really worth to replace it by WiFi using from my mobile!!! It's best one since I don't have to remove the boxes for change program or change time start!!! I glad that I bought it from Home Depot!!!

Super easy install and works great
After reading some reviews I was skeptical but I tried it out and everything works perfect for me. My router is only about 20 feet away so I don’t have any issues with that. The install was very simple and this unit has its own power supply so no low voltage wiring needed. I upgraded from an older timer to this one. Very easy set up on thr app also. It sets up all the zones without any programing. The only thing I changed was to water in the morning instead of the sunset default setting. If your upgrading from older timer take pictures of wires so you know how to set up new one.

Love this controller. When I bought my house it comes with a sprinkler system. The controller has a very ancient interface and confuses me all the time. I am very glad to find this modern controller. Very easy to install. Now I can remotely control watering via my smart phone. Perfect little tool to have during my summer getaway.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
I don't know what to say except I'm really disappointed. The Gro Controller 7 arrived full of promise. The instructions were clear and well written. The installation couldn't have been easier. It is a very attractive product. AND THEN.....Instructions were given to get the Gro Connect App from the App Store or Google Play...”the app will walk you through connecting the Gro Controller to your WI-FI NETWORK......” After about twenty confusing minutes, the app was downloaded. Unfortunately, the only option given was to connect to Blu-tooth. There is a big difference between Wi-Fi and Blutooth.. Wi-Fi is mainly used to provide wireless networking and Internet connection between wireless devices with bigger coverage and high bandwidth (such as wireless network to share Internet connection), whereas Bluetooth is normally used to provide ad-hoc voice/data transfer between mobile devices within short range and low bandwidth (voice transfer between wireless headset and cell phone or data transfer between PDA and laptop). Usually just over 30 feet. Which trashes the claim that it could be controlled from anywhere at anytime. Had the wi-fi option been given, we could probably be enjoying what this product has to offer. I don't know.

Nevadalady, we are sorry to hear of your disappointment, and apologize for any confusion. The Gro 7 Zone Controller does connect by Wifi, and can be controlled using the app anywhere you have a connection to the internet. The Gro 7 Zone Controller requires the use of Bluetooth for the initial setup and pairing of the controller only. Once the initial instructions are established over bluetooth the controller uses wifi for connecting and controlling. We would love to discuss this with you further to ensure you get the most use out of this product. At your convenience please contact us so that we can help. 1-855-976-5315 scotts

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
This is my first Wi-Fi sprinkler controller and I am very satisfied with all the features. It is a very small device and it is very easy to set up. Label all the wires on the existing controller before disconnecting and then connect the wire on the Gro 7 to the proper zone. After connecting all the wires to the device, plug the power supply. The last step is downloading the App, which connects the Gro 7 to your wife and allows all the setting. It is great to have control your sprinkler from a phone for easy management and especially when you are away on a long trip. The app will turn off your sprinkler if it knows that it will rain soon. This device is great during drought and water restrictions.

Seeds Program Review
(What's this)
Easy install and nice to know it is making decisions to water based on very local rain totals versus 'city' totals. This is a big benefit when you live in a location that has very localized rain totals. I can get a downpour but friends a few miles away might only get mist. So having a system that can use very local details and even add-on moisture monitoring devices puts me at ease. It took me 20 minutes to pull out my old original irrigation timer. The install of this system was a matter of tagging wires with included tags, removing the old, and installing the new. Then setting up the app on my phone and tablet. The app is where I remove a star. Its the only way to manage the system, but it does not always work correctly. This is concerning because its the only way to manage things. The setup was fast but when you want to go in and make changes sometimes it takes the change and other times it seems to keep the original value. Even killing the app and starting/logging in again proves the 'save' didn't correctly log itself with the cloud servers. It watered correctly this weekend but I will continue to keep an eye on it.

Dont bother with this particular Scotts Gro product. I am entirely for automation but Gro Connect watered during or after rain but also skipped "based on weather forecasts" during the hottest driest part of my season. It works in reverse. Help desk was no help. I changed settings as they requested and it became more and more frustrating to use. Smart Watering literally works in reverse. Not smart.
