Asked by: JUDYBOB
Yes you can use it on top. I seeded the bare spot and put the thin layer of lawn soil over it. Of course some of the soil was on top of the already grown grass.

Does this work well on a hill ?

Asked by: AnthonyGA
I found it held up very well on a hill in my yard. Even after a few heavy rains, it hadn't moved much.

I would say no, as it has compost in it that would clog the spreader.

First off, I was leery after reading the reviews about foreign objects in the product. I found it in my local store and felt the material through the plastic bag and it felt ok. I wished there had been a clear plastic view window on the packaging to give me a better "preview" of what I was buying. I need it to "fix" a lawn area that had been seeded by someone else. The seed had just been scattered on top of hard ground without breaking the surface up or raking the seeds in. I used four bags, roughly 120 lbs and hand spread it it. I mean that literally, my hand was every bit of the soil. I used a large plastic colander to spread it evenly in some areas. In all 4 bags I found 2 pea size pieces of something hard maybe gravel and 3 small pieces of wood chips. The wood chips were no bigger than a wood chisel shaving and broke up under finger pressure. I thought it worked very well and got excellent results especially considering the fact no surface soil prep had been done.

There really ought to be a regulation regarding the use of the word "soil". This is yet one more Scotts product not worth the plastic bag it comes in. If you like rocks the size of walnuts, bark/wood pieces up to 2" wide by 6" long, twigs, assorted pieces of plastic, wire, gravel and a little peat moss, all of which are supposedly forest products that may have been "composted" ( maybe overnight), then you'll love this premium priced product. In fact the cheapest "top soil" that Home Depot carries is somewhat better. The same negative review also applies to Turf Builder Triple Action. It is supposed to help fertilize, kill weeds and, prevent crabgrass as an all-in-one product. In reality, it does none of those things very well. My lawn did much better on the less expensive single function Vigoro products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Quality Control Having bought cheaper soil at Home Depot, I thought I would spend the money for a better name and a better product.. My thoughts were wrong! I bought four bags and returned three of them. After opening the first bag, I sifted it through a screen and ended up with 15 lbs. of stones, twigs and bark. If the bag weighs 60 - 75 lbs,, that's 20 - 25% of unusable product. I can't think of any other product where a company takes pride in selling something so bad! Thank goodness they don't sell cars! Congratulations on buying your new car...80% of it works, but you can't use the radio, AC, cruise control and power windows. In all of the other poor reviews of this product, Scotts has a response about how sorry it is and that it takes pride in its products and here's how you can contact them. How about screening the soil before you put it in the bag and sell the customer something a lot close to 100% of what they are buying instead a bag with stones and twigs! Scotts, please do me the courtesy and do not reply with your rubber stamped response!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made the bare spot overseed I did POP Used this along with Scotts grass seed and it was excellent! Filled in a bare spot in the lawn with nice thick grass and seems to hold the moisture in for the seed to take hold quickly. Very good soil product. Rated 1 out of 5 by from Full of debris Purchased 3 bags of Scotts Lawn Soil yesterday. Very disappointed as approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of the bag consisted of rocks, mulch, and a 7 inch by 2 inch diameter tree limb !! I had to screen all three bags through wire hardcloth mesh instead of returning as I was trying to complete the reseeding prior to rain coming that night and lasting a day or two and wanted to get the area done. If I didn't need to do small areas I would have been better off buying screened loam from a local garden center. Half of my seed would not have germinated due to the debris if I did not screened-wasting my money, time and effort. Scotts does not say on the bags of the soil had been screened but a good size tree limb? This is the second issue with a Scott product in the past few weeks. Not good.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too Much Debris Have always used Scott's products in the past with no issues until now. Bought 3 bags to patch some parts of the lawn and was surprised how much mulch and twigs were in it. Even found a couple of larger pieces of wood in the bags. Had to sort out some of the large pieces but used it anyways. Didn't look too bad until the next day. It wasn't windy yet noticed that some the dirt blew away exposing even more twigs, debris, and, a lot of the grass seed exposed. The dirt left was also more dust than anything else. Ended up using a spare bag of top soil laying around to cover the patches up. Not sure what happened Scott's but definitely need to look at your QA.
