Customer Reviews

Scotts Turf Builder 10,000 sq. ft. Southern Lawn Fertilizer with 2% Iron is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 373.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Give your lawn winter nutrition and spring thickness. I really enjoyed using the Scotts Winterguard lawn fertilizer. I applied from October through March in the front yard where the lawn gets only a few hours of sun during these months. In the back yard I used it from October till February. The results were very impressive, especially in the front yard where the grass became healthier and thicker in the spring time. The added nutrients in the winterguard formula make buying this product an easy decision. It will keep your lawn healthy and replenish the root system during the cold months while keeping it green and protecting it from frost. The extra thickness in the front yard crowded out all the weeds and I still haven't seen crabgrass or any other invasive weeds show up. The back yard is a newer lawn so it will take more applications before I get the same results. However, very very impressed and I think this product definitely benefits the lawn in the spring time by replenishing its nutrition in the fall/winter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best stuff ever! I started using only Scotts products on my lawn about 3 years ago and it really has made a big difference. I never changed the frequency of applications or anything else other than just the brand. I follow all the application instructions per the bag even though there are some conditions I can’t control - such as if the weather isn’t what was predicted - and my lawn still looks better than it ever has.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The results of using this product are WAY worth the costs, which are not bad. I moved into our house after we rented it for 5 years to a non-lawn caring individual. It was covered in years of old leaves and the grass was in small patches and dirt. Bad shape to say the least. I tried using cheaper products and had no luck with them. I started using all Scott products and within 2 weeks I was visually seeing huge growth and new St.Augustine grass coming up. My lawn will never see any other products, except from Scotts! Thank you Scotts team of engineer's!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best stuff on the earth Great product!!! Scott’s is the best product for your lawn on any season of the year. I actually started to use Scott’s products for my lawn just two seasons ago. Scott’s product gives the best results compared to stuff I used to use, and I tried everything. From scale (0 to 10) it’s definitely 10 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OUTSTANDING RESULTS - BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS!!! I have a cabin in the Adirondack region of NY State and recently had a new lawn put in. It survived the dry summer, but was weak and very light green in color. After consulting with a Scotts representative on the phone who took the time to research what's best for the area, she recommended Turf Builder Winterguard be applied. Even though I'm a 2nd generation loyal Scotts product user (my father ONLY used Scotts products), I was a bit skeptical that I would ever have a nice lawn in such a mountainous region with harsh and an extremely short growing season. The result 2 weeks after application: nothing short of spectacular!!! The entire lawn has turned a dark rich green color, thicker, and much healthier than I could have ever imagined. I'll wait 6 weeks when I applied it and put down one more application before we get our annual 10'-20' of snow over the winter :) Again, couldn't have asked for better results. Thanks Scotts - as always!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product has kept my lawn greener than any other in our subdivision. I moved to southern Texas from Idaho with no knowledge of the grass types or how to care for them. The house I bought had St. Ausgustine in the front yard and a combination of St. Augustine and Bermuda in the back. Early on I had a commercial landscaping company come in and work on my sprinkler system. I asked how I could keep my lawn green with the summer's heat. He told me to use Turf Builder every month at a reduced rate of application rather than just once every three months. He stated that the heat caused a lot of stress on the lawn and that a lowered but steady supply of nutrients seemed to work best for keeping a southern lawn green throughout the season. I've been using Turf Builder for Southern Lawns for five years now. He was right. My lawn is the greenest in our subdivision. Since my lawn is small (2,000 sq. ft.) I can get 4 application from the bag designed to cover 5,000 sq. ft. I couldn't be happier with a product than this. I go out at the first of every month and then wait for the neighbor's compliments to start coming in. This stuff works great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Lawn in the neighboorhood Thank you Scott's for a truly wonderful product. Our house was built last year, and the lawn was put in by seed in the spring. We opted to try a nationaly known lawn care company for the maintanance once the lawn was established. The lawn looked great, and we agreed to let them maintain it again this year. We quickly learned that their first year of service includes all the bell's and whistles of lawn care, in order to get you to sign a contract. Once we did, we were at their mercy, they came spuradically, and the lawn started getting weeds and crabgrass. We fired them, and turned to Scotts. We used it faithfully and now our lawn looks even better than last year. The weeds are gone, and it looks like a golf course lawn. We watered it sparingly in the summer, and now, in early fall, looks like a million bucks. We still have one more winterizer to go in October. We are the envy of our neighbors!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Clumps of fertilizer makes it unusable This is not my first bad experience with Scotts fertilizer but it will be my last. Previously I bought a bag of fertilizer and upon opening a fair percentage of it was clumped together so with gloves I broke it apart prior to using. This year I carefully checked bag for punctures before buying and found none. I got it home started pouring it into rotary spreader and numerous large clumps were in the bag. This time the clumps were packed hard and responded like clay when trying to break apart. They wouldn't break into individual grandules. In fact all the fertilizers could be squeezed into clumps making passing through a rotary spreader impossible presently I'm attempting to dry the fertilizer out on plastic in my driveway. Fooled twice, not again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from yes lawn seems better already. Im following the "my Scotts lawn care plan" online. I used winter weed and feed, then Scotts halts crabgrass preventer, prior to this I have done nothing with the lawn, just moved to this house 2 years ago. Don't know if its this or the halts, but lawn is looking nice and green much better then ever.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product when used at a lower setting I love Scotts products. They are consistent in quality and are a better value than many of the big box store brands. I purchased this last February to start the season off for my St. Augustine Lawn in Central Florida. I found that the grass was growing too fast at the recommended setting (I water as per the county extension guidelines) and was afraid this will stress my beautiful lawn and open it to pests and/or infections. I was mowing every 5 days and this kept me busy through the growing season. The 2% iron really made my grass green and the envy of my neighbours but they did not see the work i was putting in with the regular mowing. I would recommend using a lower setting to reduce the nitrogen content and feed it again mid season to prevent fast growth and also the chance of burning the grass. I gave it 4 stars only becausethe product had clumps and i had to break that up so it does not clog the spreader. I am sure that Scotts would have provided a refund or some other way to make me happy. They have great customer service as well so call them if you need advise. Overall a thumbs up, you cant go wrong with this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product has been the very best for my lawn in the winter When I first started using Scotts Winterguard, many years ago, I would apply it in late Ocrtober. One year the leaves clung to my trees until the end of November and some into the first od December. So I waited and applied the Winterguard after I scraped the last of the leaves. It has worked like magic every since and so I don't apply it until say mid-November or early December, according to the leaf drop. Also am very pleased with all Scott products. Have used them faithfully for many years and get so many compliments on my thick green lawn. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Yellowing grass I bought this product to help my yard grow fuller. It’s my first time using this product. Three days after application my grass started yellowing and it seems to be getting worse. I’m praying that my grass doesn’t die. I followed all recommended instructions but am very disappointed at the results. I wouldn’t recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lawn food = good looking healthy lawn. Last year I decided to do something about my lawn. I've struggled with it for years and it was only decent looking. Last summer I started using Scotts Southern Lawn Food on a regular basis along with Scotts fall and winter fertilizer products. What a difference! My lawn now looks thick and healthy; in one year. Visitors and neighbors have commented on how good it looks now. I tell them what I have done and they are surprised at how much of a difference a little fertilizer applied at regular intervals makes in the attractiveness of the lawn. I'm going to keep doing this because it's easy and cost effective. My yard has actually become low maintenance. I water, mow and feed; that's it. The best yard I've had since I became a homeowner over 30 years ago. In short, for my review, these are wonderful products and I recommend them highly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too good at retaining moisture The materal clumps so bad, it will not come out of a broadcast spreader, even when I set it two number above the recommend setting. I ended up just having to spread it by hand. I live in central texas, and stored the unopened bag in my garage. Maybe if you store it in your home with the AC it will keep the humidity out of the material, but even as I was spreading it it seemed to suck the moisture out of the air and stop up the spreader.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EASY TO USE, EXCEEDS EXPECTIONS, NOT MESSY, PRODUCT IS CONSISTANT AND SO ARE THE RESULTS i HAVE A FESCUE LAWN SO FALL IS A BUSY TIME FERTILIZING AND SEEDING FOR NEXT SPRING. THIS YEAR I PUT DOWN TURFF BUILDER WINTERIZER WITH WEED KILLER. I FIGURED IF I KILL THE WEEDS NOW THAT MUCH LESS TO DEAL WITH IN THE SPRING. I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED. THE PRODUCT NOT ONLY GREENED UP THE LAWN AND FEED IT AFTER THE DROUGHTFUL SUMMER WE HAD BUT THE WEEDS ARE DYING AND THE LAWN APPEARS LEE STRESSED AND THICKING VERY NICELY. USING A BROAD CAST SPREADDER WITH THIS PRODUCT HELPS CUT DOWN ON MY SPREADING TIME AND MINIMIZES THE NORMAL MESS ASSOCIATED WITH FERTILIZING. THEN AGAIN THIS PRODUCT HAS VERY LITTLE "POWDER" ASSOCIATED WITH IT DUE TO THE FACT ITS GRANULAR SO NO DUST ALSO THE GRAINS SEEMS TO PROVIDE EVEN CONSISTANT "GREENING" OF THE LAWN WHERE EVER IT IS SPREAD. I'M REALLY PARTICULAR AND THIS PRODUCT TURNED OUT REALLY GOOD RESULTS. .

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't trust the negative reviews Read through a bunch of reviews and saw the bad reviews and thoughts they were either one offs or wouldn't happen to me. I was wrong. Had a lawn that was doing great coming out of winter and wanted to give It a little boost. Two weeks later lawn is yellowing and thinning out. We have gotten plenty of rain so it isn't lack of water. Sucks as I had high hopes for the backyard this year. Guess I'll hope next year is better. Believe the negative reviews. I can and will happen to you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ended Miserably Had the nicest, greenest grass in the neighborhood once we moved in during July. Decided to use this product to get me through the winter. Ended up with horrible, yellow dead spots all over my lawn less than a week later. I'm a lawn novice to this stuff, but can honestly say I'm disappointed that I not only overpaid for lawn fertilizer to get Scotts compared to other brands that I was told would work just as well, but now I literally have no idea what steps to take to even begin to remedy the situation. As a new homeowner, am just heart broken that it came to this, and feel flat-out awful/like an idiot in front of all my neighbors that I could make such a nice lawn a complete eyesore. Thanks Scotts, much appreciated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product I started using WinterGuard last fall and happy how good my lawn looked in this spring. It seemed thicker and less weeds. I did a search of winter lawn fertilizers and found great article from Colorado State University said the most important nutrient for fall fertilizer was nitrogen and to use a concentration such as 25-5-5 or something similar. WinterGuard is 32-0-10 so it has the perfect blend of nitrogen for my bluegrass here in Colorado.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dissapointed with product results I have been using Scotts products for over 20 years , unfortunately this past usage of fall and winter fertilizer was a flop, to say the least. My lawn in large part went from green to brown. I've always used Scotts spreaders and recommended settings . I can only hope that they will make good on their guarantee and help me to restore my lawn to an acceptable shade of green.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed lawn! I recently applied this product to my lawn, following the directions to the letter. Previously the product worked and my lawn greened up as advertised. This time, within 5 days, my lawn completely died! I am going to have to replace my lawn because the damage is so extensive! Your product completely ruined my lawn! I won't ever recommend this product to anyone!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not work! Bought this product and applied it over a month ago and the only thing that it did was feed weeds. I had a beautiful Bermuda yard until I used this product, which really let me down because I've always spent more $$$ for higher quality, so I thought. Save your money and try something else. Very disappointed!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I do not like this product This product I bought during June and followed all instruction, though my lawn was not bad at all before applying this product, after applying with instructions and label etc, now my lawn became straws all over and died, i need to figure out to redo this again with the help of experts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Central Texas Lawns Year after year I apply this in the spring. I prefer to not use much fertilizer and this does the trick for 1x a year feeding. I have Zoisia grass and part St. Augustine on my neighboring property. It mutually benefits both and keeps things green through our harsh Texas summers.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is impossible to use When I brought this product home and opened the bag, the fertilizer appeared to be extremely moist and had large hard clumps in the bag. I tried to break up the clumps and attempted to spread it with a Scott's Speedy Green 3000 spreader. The fertilizer was still too moist to spread and kept clumping up in the spreader. I put the fertilizer in my house with air conditionibg, hoping to reduce the moisture. While this worked, when I took the fertilizer back out a few days later, it still clumped up and immediately sucked up moisture from the atmosphere. I did get the product on my lawn, but I kept having to stop to unclog my spreader. This product might work in a dry climate like Arizona, but it does not work here in Georgia. I'm very disappointed in this fertilizer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for the Carolina Summer I read the Almanac and saw where we were going to have a long, dry summer. So on 18 May 2014 I spread the Scotts® Southern Turf Builder® with 2% Iron, heat and drought control. Up until the last week, 25 Aug 2014 my yard has been one of the best looking and greenest. I water twice a week (in-ground sprinklers) at 5 a.m. for about 10 minutes on each section twice. I get twenty minutes of water when I think it is the best time to water. I'm backing off now as it has been very dry and I need to conserve. But my centipede will come back even greener. The turf builder has worked very well and several neighbors have asked about my lawn. I told them I use Scotts' products all year and they can see the results. Excellent product.
