Does this kill off crabgrass ?

Asked by Todd July 14, 2020
3
Answers

No. This is strictly a fertilizer (with an insecticide.). Eliminating crabgrass this time of year pretty much requires a spray (which most often has to be repeated). My best suggestion is to wait it out, let them die off in the fall, and then apply Halts at the appropriate time in early spring. You'll take care of the crabgrass almost entirely in a year or two.

How soon do I need to water this in? If applied in evening, can water wait till morning?

Always water after applying feed. This way it won't blow away.

What is the shelf life?

Asked by Newbie June 26, 2020

Answers

I've found it stores fine for a year. Keep it off the garage or shed floor, though. Even though the package is plastic, it will still pick up moisture and clump up. Put it up a few inches from the floor, and it'll be fine next year. I always use leftover stuff in more hidden or least used or seen areas just to be on the safe side.

Is it required for the lawn to be mowed before applying this product?

I think it is on the instruction to do so. What I usually do is mow the yard, apply, water right after not to soak and I get great results.

Will this burn my lawn?

Asked by Shells July 30, 2019

Answers

Here's a basic list of suggestions to avoid fertilizer burning: Follow label directions exactly. Water it in within a couple of days (either rain or your own irrigating). Don't over apply it (either on the overall lawn or by having too large of an overlap). Be sure the spreader is working properly. Don't apply it during a drought or if the grass is dormant. Fill the spreader on the driveway so nothing spills on the lawn. Don't back up with the spreader engaged. And be sure to put a pass first on the sides you walk toward in order to get a consistent stopping point. These are all very easy to manage. Then walk at a normal pace, paying attention to how far the spreader sends it, and you should be fine. Shoot for an overlap of maybe 12" or so.

Seeding the entire lawn

I would seed firsr and fertilize after. Not sure on the wait period, but the bag instructions usually indicate that. Unfortunately I threw my bag away. You may want to look at Scotts Seed Starter fertilizer, if you are newly seeding your lawn, instead of the Summerguard. It's specially made to be applied at the time of seeding. It promotes germination and growth.

Incredible results at such a bargain price.
Customer review from scotts.com logo
I live in Texas where the sun tends to keep my yard looking dry and yellow. I wasn’t sure what to do so I did some research online and came across the Scotts Turf Builder. I also purchased the automatic spreader and it worked amazing. I only needed one bag to cover my front and back yard. I’m just a few weeks my lawn looks amazing. I changed my sprinkler to water two times a day (6am and 6pm) for 15 (~3 min per zone). I’m elated with the results and will be using Scott’s products all year round.

KILLS YOUR LAWN!!!!!!!!
Customer review from scotts.com logo
Unfortunately I did not see the newer reviews about this product when I purchased. I looked at the reviews but they had the oldest and best reviews listed first. After I used the product and started getting brown patches all over my lawn I researched again and then found the newer reviews stating this product leaves burnt patches in your lawn. There is no excuse for this when it is suppose to protect your lawn but instead kills it. After maintaining my lawn and spending money on keeping if healthy and green this product comes along and kills it. Will never use AGAIN!!!!! What is worse is Scott's is aware of the problem and are still selling this product. Read Less

We apologize that you were not thoroughly satisfied with Scotts Turf Builder SummerGuard Lawn Food with Insect Control. When used according to label instructions the product does not damage the grass. While there is a safety factor built into the product, too much product can cause damage. We recommend a watering program of 1/2" of water every 2 to 3 days. Follow this watering plan for at least 3 weeks following the application. Most lawns will recover given time. We offer a guarantee that extends to all of our products. If this interests you, we ask that you contact us at https://tinyurl.com/y8nvfsca.

Awful damage to lawn even when used as directed
Customer review from scotts.com logo
We went from a nice green lawn to yellow and brown hay in a matter of days. We spent much of this Spring fixing patches that had died since the lawn was seeded over two years ago. Tons of time spent and it was finally perfect. No patches and all strong green, healthy grass. Decided to be proactive and give it an extra kick before late Fall weed n' feed. Chose the product because it explicitly states no burn possibility. Weather hovered around 80-88 over last week when this was applied - package states that can be applied June -Aug (which in most of the lower 48 states will always be above 85!) and definitely in the mid-Atlantic region where we are). Large burn patches began to appear within 48 hours. We have had a wet week - some to a lot of rain daily. But still it gets worse! See photos - one of the bad areas and one of an area of lawn that I did not put product on because I ran out prior to getting to it. Looking to the 'bad' photo you can also see the other neighbors across street whose lawns looked similar to ours PRIOR to application. I should add that the massive number of patches in the one photo are accumulating more daily and they are getting wider every morning since application

We apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced with Scotts Turf Builder SummerGuard Lawn Food with Insect Control. Burns grass
Customer review from scotts.com logo
i tried the summer gaurd product on my beautiful lawn for the first time in 4 years ive owned my home. Reading it wont burn grass and keep lawn green in summer months. Well i never should have, in staed of having lighter green grass like i usaully have in summer, its not burned up, dead and will take alot of work to redo. I used this scotts summer gaurd end of may, seemed fine, i redid end of july and now my whole lawn looks camo of dead grass, yellow and brown dead grass. Used exactly as directed, watered as recommended. 2 weeks and a few days later i have a ruined lawn. Tons of my money, time and hard work wasted. APPLY AT YOUR OWN RISK

Use the 4 step program
Customer review from scotts.com logo
I started using the Scotts 4 step program at the beginning of the season, finished the 3rd step a few weeks ago, and the difference is way beyond what I thought was possible. I had a horrible looking lawn, now it looks professional. Highly recommend.
