About This Product

Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sunny Mix thrives in direct sun. This mix contains Root-Building Nutrition, a combination of ingredients that is expertly crafted to help establish deep roots to grow thick, green turf so that you can build a better, stronger lawn from the roots up. Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sunny Mix is designed for full sun and light shade, and has medium to high drought resistance with medium to high durability. It can be used to seed a new lawn or overseed an existing lawn. For best results, apply in the spring or fall when daily average soil temperatures are consistently between 55°F and 70°F or air temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F. We recommend using a Scotts spreader to apply this product (please refer to spreader settings on product label). Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall. Great growth in sun, not in shade
Patched two very small areas. The one that gets a lot of dun thrived, but not the one in the shade. The area that thrived--I've never had such good performance in seed. See photo.

            So far, perfect!!
I seeded a small area (100 sq ft) that I have been having issues with for a couple of years. I removed the old sod, and replaced the top couple of inches with new soil and compost. After seeding, I lightly raked the seed into the soil and then covered the area with a very thin layer of peat moss. Depending on the weather, I lightly watered it either once or twice a day. A little over 3 weeks later, it looks AWESOME. I plan on tackling a larger area in my back yard in the spring.

              Good product. Are seeds sterile?
I laid this down this past summer. It's starting to sprout seeds. Are the seed heads that grow from this product sterile?

Bermuda seed takes lots of diligence and water
I had a septic system started in March 2023. The drain field was seeded with rye grass which was only temporary. The machinery destroyed the standing buffalo grass. I put down Scotts Bermuda seed and it took well in all the bare areas, but I didn't cut the rye grass short enough to get germination. I had to go back and scalp it and reseed. Four 8 lb bags of seed and daily watering in stage 2 restrictions. Lots of hours of hand watering. It is pretty well established now and I am just trying to thicken the thin areas before starting to harden it off by reducing the watering.

                  Meh
The area I seeded gets full sun all day and I'm in southern California so I needed a heat and drought tolerant grass. I seeded the area twice and it grew in a couple square inch patches here and there. Now I've just got weeds. Watered every day. Been about a month. Not certain what happened but seems I'm not the only person who's had an issue with this mix.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-tolerant Blue Mix For Tall Fescue Lawns and appreciate your feedback. Our growing media products undergo composting that kills most weed seeds, however since we do not sterilize our soils some may remain. We chose not to sterilize our soils as this would kill beneficial microorganisms that help the growth of plants. We are able to offer our "weed-free guarantee" by way of our No Quibble Guarantee. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-270-3714 if we can further assist.
                    ALL WEEDS
Hardly any grass and all weeds! Including weedsI I’ve never seen before! My yard has been completely weed free from YOY manually pulling as well as chemical applications… and now that I patched an area with this seed it’s all weeds in that area! I basically paid for weeds and reintroduced them jnto my yard. Last time im buying Scotts!!

                        Grows fast and thick
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] For some reason every year i have bare spots in my lawn so this year I figured I would try this. It did take some trial and error but once the temperatures hit the right temp these grew in pretty fast, sprouts within a few or two, I definitely suggest getting some soil or hay to cover because the birds kept trying to eat all my seed but it came up really well through my cheap top soil and most of my spots are filled in and the rest of the seed I had I used to fill out my lawn which cause it’s to be nice and thick so this seeds works really well.

                          Great grass seed
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great grass seed. I changed my lawn to Turf type tall fescue about 5 years ago. This seed filled in some bare spots very nicely. Awesome germination rate. If anybody gives it a bad review for not germinating, then it’s user error. Not everyone can grow grass seed. Great color and thickness.

I'm expecting good things to happen...
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This review is not as complete as I would like it to be due to the weather in Colorado and the deadline for submitting my review. However, I’m a lifelong Scotts customer and I’ve never been disappointed with any of the products I’ve purchased and I’ve never needed to take advantage of their no quibble guarantee. Because we might still get a frost, I’m only going to do a very limited area of the yard. In two weeks, I should be safe in doing the rest of the yard. For this product, I waited until our weather isn’t supposed to drop below 50 degrees and used a tool to break up the soil at least an inch in depth. Then I used my Scotts spreader at the recommended setting and evenly distributed the seed. When I was finished, I compacted the soil by stepping on it to ensure that the seed made good contact. Then I watered, using a gentle spray to make sure that enough water was used to get the ground moist but not drenched. We had a gentle rain last night, and more at different times today. I’ll ensure that the soil gets moistened again before it gets dark this evening and then repeat the cycle each day for the next two weeks. I’ve included a close-up of the seed in the spreader so you can see the fertilizer and soil improver that is also contained in the package. This seed is advertised to resist extreme heat and at our altitude, the radiational heating is significant. I’m looking forward to seeing the results of this test! My expectation is to see very fine green shoots sprouting soon – hopefully in 10 – 14 days. I apologize for not being able to include a picture, but here in Colorado, our growing season is a bit later than in most of the Country. Based on past performance, I’m rating this product at the 5-star level.
