Questions & Answers

can i use a spreader with this product and will it grow if it is just spread on top of the ground

Asked by: Action
I would not try to grow this or any grass seed by just throwing it on top of the ground. Rake the area, lightly break up the soil, and spread the seed. Then when it rains or when you lightly spray it with the hose the loose soil will become muddy and will cover the seed with a light layer of mud. I think that's the secret.

What is best height to keep this grass looking perfect

I guess different grass looks better kept at different heights
Asked by: coolie
The best is to mow on the highest setting mulching no more than one third of the grass blade height. This may require more mows but will create a great look.

10 days back i reseed my lawn and now i am seeing tiny white flowers every where. What is it and what i need to do?

When will i see green grass and when i can mow my lawn.
Asked by: Gg
Do the white flowers look like the ones in the attachment? If so, it's clover. Weed killer will get rid of clover but I wouldn't use it while the lawn is still young.

I laid a small area with about 3 lbs of seed and yet to see results after two weeks, am I doing something wrong?

Followed all steps and watered daily with no results. I did not lay any hay as I made sure to water and not let the seed burn. I previously power raked the whole yard with my zero turn mower and made sure it had a nice clean surface to adhere to
Asked by: Dbeis
I say wait another week. I don't remember exactly how long mine took to come up, but I'm pretty sure it was longer than 2 weeks... longer than I expected.

It appears that it takes way longer to germinate than they advertise. However - without much care on my side - grass is growing and looks great.

Warning; you MUST water at least once a day. You cannot get by with just spraying the dirt with your water hose for 30 seconds until the dirt darkens up a bit. YOU NEED TO GET A SPRINKLER ON THIS EVERY DAY for a good 20-30 minutes. If it rains steady for a day even better. Otherwise your going to get frustrated. It needs a good SLOW yet STEADY saturation. I got a Gilmore sprinkler with a 3 arm rotation head on it. Grass looks great. I got a couple bare spots that I will pepper with more seed every week or so till it fills in nice and plush.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The proof is in the pics The proof is in the pictures. First pic is on Day 0, after prep and application. Second pic is at 2 weeks. Third pic is after 4 weeks. Scotts works perfectly, but you need to put in the time and prep correctly. There is no miracle seed that allows you to just "throw down seed" and water. This is the third time I've planted a lawn (or major portions of one) and the trick is in the prep. 1. Loosen the soil where you will be applying the seed. Make sure soil is loose at least 2" deep... not just the very top. 2. OVERSEED. Put down so much seed you do not see dirt. This is the one step I deviate from the "bag instructions". I believe more seed is better. 3. Work seed into dirt. This step is not included in the bag, but I believe it makes a huge difference. Working the seeds into the dirt provides cover and protection from the elements (sun, water, etc.). Don't work in too deep. Just a gentle mix. Yes, there will be seeds on the top of the dirt that aren't fully worked-in. It's ok. 4. WATER!!! For the lawn in this picture, I watered twice a day... once before work (say 500A) and once when I returned home (say 430P). I watered for about 15-20mins each time. Just until it was damp. The lawn pictured required this much water, since it is in direct sunlight all day and the top of the soil was dry by the time I returned home from work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product doesn't grow Regraded my backyard due to water issues. Hauled in 6.5 yards of premium compost from a local nursery and spread over a 2000 sq ft area. Spread Scotts Water Dumb Sun & Shade, covered with rolls of straw matting to control erosion and watered twice a day. It's 9 days into this project now and there is not 1 single blade of new grass growing. This seed is very frustrating and waaaay too expensive for what you get. Especially since this is the 2nd time I'm seeding this area because the first time it completely washed out from 3 solid weeks of torrential down pour.

This stuff is harshly infested with Nutsedge (a lime green grass looking weed). At least this grew, I used the contractor's mix and that didn't grow except a few blades, what a waste of money. I used the whole 3 pound bag of this, so I don't think I can ask for my money back, but I WILL NOT be buying any type of Scott's grass seed in the future. I used Scott's lawn soil where I dug dirt out so they can't say "when you disturb the soil that can happen" It was all Scott's products and I won't be wasting money on any of that again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great results but need to do the work! Over the winter, our lawn completly died and was dug up by the plow. We corrected it all with scotts products! Every where we went merchants said scotts had the best product on the market! So, we did a soil test, added lime to balance ph, raked dead grass out, added scotts top soil, scotts lawn starter and scotts lawn seed. After that, we watered the lawn twice a day for 3 weeks! Results speak for them selves! In just 3 weeks!

This seed has had an uphill battle from the beginning - there was powdered concrete and contractor sand in location I could not get rid of regardless of screen or tilling. So we are still waiting. There are also 3 other types of seeds in there and the conditions are alkaline (not good) I watch, baby, fiddle, etc like old mother hen in there. Will not use lawn mower on her, only shears and should wait until next year. I am out there at 5:00 am checking progress. Insanity, I guess.
