Q:Can this be spread with a fertilizer spreader?
by|Jun 4, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Hello, Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil is best applied by using a shovel and rake to spread around. Common spreaders are not designed to spread soil, compost, peat, vermiculite, sand, stone, or mulch. Some are too heavy and may damage the spreader. Vermiculite, peat and perlite are very light and may stick to the hopper with static.

A:  Scotts Lawn Soil should be used with new seed or sod. An application of a Lawn Fertilizer preferable Scotts Starter Fertilizer for New Lawns (or PHO-Nitro) should be made approximately 4 weeks after using the Seeding Lawn Soil. Weed controls should not be used until the new seed has been mowed 4 times.

After poor results using standard Top Soil products, I decided to try Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Soil. Yes, it is expensive compared to basic Top Soil. Our yard, however, was seriously lacking in quality soil for the installed Bermuda turf grass. I purchased 28 bags of the Scotts Lawn Soil. It worked very well for lawn leveling. With the added fertilizer, the results were apparent within 4 days of laying it down. I highly recommend this product.

          Won’t buy this again.
Not sure what I achieved buying this product. I spread it liberally in blank patches on my lawn and used Scott’s grass seed but it has been 4 weeks and I’m still waiting for seeds to germinate. I water regularly (in ground sprinkler system). When I look at the Scott’s soil I purchased, there’s a lot of bulk such as wood chips which I don’t think qualify as soil. I purchased 30 bags, used 22 and returned the rest. Btw, some of the soil in the bags had a white residue which I think was fungus. I considered returning the soil but once you start the process you continue with the hope your efforts will pay off. Unfortunately it didn’t and it cost me $7/bag X 22 bags ~ $175 with taxes. I didn’t intend on spending my time, money and energy on experimenting with Scott’s products. Very disappointed.

Martin, we are sorry to hear of your disappointment in Turf Builder Enriched Lawn Soil. While small pieces of bark and twigs are intentional components of our growing media including potting soil, garden soil, lawn soil, and topsoil, you should not find large pieces of wood or bark. We do our best to screen out rocks and larger pieces with screens however, holes can open in our screen and debris may get through before the issue is discovered. Most of our soils especially potting mixes and garden soils are made of composted forest products. Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction. Fungal spores are a natural part of soils. Under the correct conditions, spores can develop into fungus or mold. Our growing media products are not sterilized and may contain microorganisms such as fungus. Mold/fungus usually occurs in the packaging, especially if it has been stored outside or in humid conditions for a period of time.

            Too much mulch
Was expecting almost all dirt/soil in this product. After 2 bags, I realized there was too much unwanted mulch. Maybe I just got some bad bags, but I returned the rest. I would use this if I was prepping for sod to be laid, but not for top dressing.

Soil is full of debris and mulch
Bought 15 bags of this soil to patch areas of my lawn while reseeding. After dumping all the bags and when spreading it out, I realized that a great deal of this product is mulch and wood chips, with very little actual soil. Now I have chunks of wood and sticks spread all over my lawn, which will take ages to remove and looks bad - not to mention the grass seed I wasted at the same time. I see from the reviews that I'm not the first person who has had this issue, But I shouldn't have to investigate reviews to understand if a product called "lawn soil" is actually, lawn soil. I shop at Home Depot a lot and this is not the quality I expect from them. They should stop carrying this product.

                Disappointed, 80% mulch/20% soil
I bought 18 bags and proceeded to spread throughout my bare spots before reseeding. I notice there was quite a bit of mulch mixed into the bags. I did not think twice due to the Scott’s reputation. Now that the soil is settling, all that is visible is the mulch. After looking through the reviews, I felt compelled to post my experience. As I said, I am only one week into spreading, but I am concerned with the product.

                  Order was short
I paid $35 dollars for dilivery of the following: 8 bags of soil and 8 bags of mulch, the delivery person took off the bags of which half we ripped open and 1 bag of soil missin after i counted then and had the driver confirm. The driver spoke NO english. Not what i expect from Home Depot.

                    Cutting corners, or lower standards?
I have boughten Scotts Turff Builder LawnSoil in the last week and it was more of a mulch than dirt, and some of the wood chips I could see what looks like a finish on wood furniture. I had boughten Scotts Turff Builder LawnSoil in past years that was actually dirt but something is clearly different this time. Are they cutting corners?

                      Over-priced garbage
Way too much debris and the debris pieces are too large (see pictures). It has to be filtered before using, which I didn't know until I dumped it on the ground. Then I had to rake or pick up things by hand. On item was metal and sharp...dangerous. It was impossible to seed without gaps. I used two bags and they were both poor. A bag of cheaper brand soil had much less (but still some) debris than this premium priced stuff. I will not be buying this product again. And now, to be fair, this review is based on a September 2022 purchase. Is it possible that the quality control has improved? Sure. But I'm not going to take that chance.

Of all the products I’ve used for my soil . This is the best yet . Just laid 12 rolls of sod , mixed this product in with my soil for preparation and it’s starting to root after just one week. Use it for all my shrubs and flower beds. Best product out there.
