Questions & Answers

can this be mixed in water first then sprayed or is it better in it's original form

Asked by: oscar
Best applied in granular form and then water it in. I always try to apply when I know it is going to rain the same day or that night.

Asked by: ksgirl
Thank you for inquiring about Scotts Turf Builder Winterguard Weed and Feed. Once the ground is frozen it is too late to apply fertilizer. Applying fertilizer to a dormant lawn can cause serious damage. We encourage you to contact us at 877-220-3089 if there is anything else that we can assist you with.

Customer Reviews

Turf Builder Winterguard 14 lb. 5,000 sq. ft. Fall Lawn Fertilizer Plus Weed Control is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 281.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money and time Applied winterguard weed and feed to my lawn (East Texas) last year in early October and meant to leave this review sooner. As most reviewers on here say as well, I followed the directions as stated and conditions were allegedly perfect, per the recommendations on the bag. Luckily, I didn’t have any of the problems with burn spots others reported, but it didn’t burn the weeds either. Not at all. I’d honestly like to have what’s left in the bag tested to see if it’s even remotely close to the chemicals and concentrations Scott’s advertised. The only difference I’ve seen after applying this product is a lot more weeds in my yard over the last few months. It’s honestly hard to explain how thick they have grown. I have to wonder if the people with positive reviews are lucky enough to not have a bad weed problem to begin with. My yard was laid with Bermuda sod two years ago and had looked amazing. Half of it is a clover field now. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste the little time it would take you to put this product out. It’s not worth it!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of time, money and my lawn I've used Scotts products for the last 20 years always with good results. I applied Turf Builder / Winterguard in October, following all the instructions on the bag. I just raked up the sticks/leaves, etc which had accumulated over the winter and my lawn in coming in clumps - the entire area I raked looks burnt - it's horrible. (I have before and after pictures.) I will have to spend a ridiculous amount of money to basically re-seed and fertilize the lawn. I hope the lawn will survive. This product is horrible and I would never recommend it. I have attached before and after pictures.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I emailed Scotts to say the following: On the bag, the directions say to set your rotary spreade... I emailed Scotts to say the following: On the bag, the directions say to set your rotary spreader to 3 1/4. This barely made a dent in the fertilizer. Since I have 5000 square feet, I should have used up all the fertilizer. After sending a message to Scotts, I poked around their site and found a link that finds the spreader setting for you if you enter the name of your spreader and the bar code of your product. For me--I have a Scotts 3000 rotary spreader and for the product I entered the code from the bag of Turf Builder Winterguard Fall Weed & Feed. The suggested setting is 6. So there is a big difference. The next day, I got a pleasant reply from Scotts that suggested I had somehow made a mistake, but if I wanted a refund, they would give me one. I replied that they have conflicting information and that they should take the time to compare the information on the site with the information on the bag. In the meantime folks--find that link so you get the setting right the first time and don't have to wait for a 24 hour period of no rain to reapply the fertilizer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not reccomend! Last summer we killed weeds, raked out dead weeds and grass and used easy seed lawn repair. Lawn was beautiful by end of summer! We were so happy. Applied winterguard in fall. All of our new grass (and hard work) is dead and brown. Very disappointed and frustrated!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Seeing crazy Nutgrass after application I had a leftover bag of Scotts winterguard from last fall. Used this in late Feb. Immediately after applying my green fescue turned brown and Nutgrass/Nutsedge has taken over my backyard now. Horrible product, wont be using again. :(

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The product says it covers 5000 sq. ft. I have used it for years because it is good for my lawn. ... The product says it covers 5000 sq. ft. I have used it for years because it is good for my lawn. However, I use a Scotts spreader and the recommended settings. My lawn is about 1300 sq. ft., which means I should only use less than 1/3 of the bag. Invariably, it takes at least 2/3 of a bag to get the job done. And I am pretty OCD about the way I follow instructions. My complaint, then, is against the advertising hype. It doesn't seem to really cover 5000 sq. ft. as advertised.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved my lawn I had a brand new lawn installed when I moved into my house 5 years ago and it was beautiful. In the coming years the lawn deteriorated into a weed patch. I tried many products and nothing worked to revive the lawn. I was on the verge of replacing it with artificial turf but decided to try this product in the Fall in hopes of finally having a decent lawn in the Spring. Well, at least where the grass outnumbered the weeds any way. When Spring came I couldn't believe how green and lush my lawn was. It looked even better than when it was first installed. This photo was taken at the beginning of April 2015. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
