Questions & Answers

the opening i need this for is 34 3/4. can the sides be shaved down to fit without ruining the door? Can this be done in the store?

Screen Tight Hampton 36 in. Wood Unfinished Screen Door Model # WHAM36
Asked by: hdcono
I did attempt some sanding to reduce 0.25", however, your necessary dimension may required sawing as it does not respond well to rasping or filing. Reducing the width of the frame (if feasible) may be a better solution. See my comments on the door itself. Paul

The instructions say the door must be sealed, can this be accomplished simply by painting the door? Or do you need to use some kind of shellac and then paint over it?
Asked by: Bill
Any primer and then paint is fine. You can use latex or oil primer and then latex or oil paint. Make sure you remove the metal screen frame and prime and paint entire door including top and bottom to seal door. Screen Tight RM

Went back 8 times to adjust hinges and or trim door. Door fell apart hanging in place, with no use at all. I've been a carpenter/general contractor since 1985. This door made me look bad. Waste of my time, and money. I can't get a hold of anyone at Home Depot who cares, and I can't figure out who makes the door. These photos only show 1 joint that fell apart. They all came loose. Plus there were other cracks and defects I caulked during installation.

Door literally came apart before it was hung or even panted. No glue in several of the finger joints (door rails) or in dowel pockets at tenons. Knew that at this price point the door would not be of highest quality, and that it might require some reinforcement with plates in corners, but lack of glue in joints shows a serious manufacturing flaw & lack of quality control

Installed this in lieu of more expensive wooden door from door company for customer. Poor quality in the millwork - routing on door panels very bad - a little work before painting needed to hide the mess. Wood joints failed within 6 months - rebuilt and added screen-door crossmember to fix. You get what you pay for.

By the very next morning it had sagged to the point where it no longer even closed. It's so weakly constructed it can't even hold its own weight. HD should pull this item from its stores immediately.

Not just a couple, but most of them all the way around the screen. Not worth the money or the time! If I wanted workmanship like that, I’d have had my husband build it.

First two I tried were so poorly finished that no amount of wood filler would repair the joints and shoddy milling work. Packaging does not allow to fully inspect the product, particularly the lower base portion. Brought those first two back and settled on one after stripping a portion of the packaging to determine its condition. I meticulously stained and sealed the door as it was to receive some outdoor exposure. Following a rain event about two weeks later, the door frame buckled and warped so severely that the joints became exposed and the frame was no longer square (1" deflection over 36" width of door). The door was no longer able to support its own weight. If I was to identify one positive feature, the screen was taut. I understand the premise that you get what you pay for but this goes well beyond the extreme: $69.95 worth of kindling. Run as fast as you can.
