As long as the incoming water source is 1/2” and the connection to your dishwasher is 1/4” sure, but I seriously doubt the water line into your dishwasher is only 1/4”, that’s usually the size going to ice makers.

You are going to need to have at least one end the pipe to move abit. First you are going to have to have the two ends of the pipe be able to spread enough to fit the length of the fitting. Then insert one pipe end into the fitting, then be able to push the fitting back in... So if you you don't have any play in the pipes, you won't be able to fit the fitting in if you just cut a gap in the pipe to accommodate the fitting when installed; or, if you cut the pipe to accommodate the fitting between them it will be too wide to connect both ends into the fitting. In the past I've had to remove pipe hangers far enough away or enlarged holes where pipes when through a floor to get enough flex in the pipe to install the fitting.

A great, and very easy solution to connecting my fridge water line to the 1/2 main. It's also much cleaner and I believe less likely to leak than using the saddle valve connector. I have nominal experience in these matters too but my best friend has been the mini pipe cutter.

Product went onto the 1/2 pipes rather easily, however the 1/4 inch compression nut cracked upon installation, luckily I had another handy from a different project. It would have been a real pain to have to drive all the way back to home depot to get replacement.

Had a HVAC company install a humidifier in 2013 and they cheapened out and used a saddle valve for the water line. Two and a half years into the install, the saddle valve failed. I called a plumber out and he said $200 for a new saddle valve or $600 to install a new fitting with a 1/4" compression valve on it. I decided to try and fix it myself. I watched the sharkbite videos and for $65 in parts (copper pipe cutter, sharkbite valve, sharkbite deburr tool, sharkbite disconnect clip and copper pipe to practice on), I fixed it myself in just about 30 minutes (to include clean-up). Sharkbite fittings are one of the best plumbing inventions in a long time and thanks to HD for carrying the product.

i replaced an old saddle valve for my ice maker line. the last homeowner conviently tapped in the the 3/4" line and not a 1/2" line so i had to special order this. feels good to have some peace of mind and be able to shut off the water line. was easy to install. cut the old pipe. slide on and it lock in place. then you can even rotate it to get the shut off where you want it. love the flexibility.

Best valve for new fridge ice maker

Our new Maytag fridge required a higher water flow than the kits that "tap" the copper pipe could provide. This SharkBite valve solved the problem and was fairly easy to install. The closest supply line was 3/4" copper pipe so the 1/2" SharkBite ice maker install kit would not work. If you need to tap a 3/4" copper supply line for your refrigerator, this is the way to go.
