What is the biggest size of hole in pipe for this fitting to keep working just fine?

Asked by TonyR2040 October 12, 2020

Answer

Use to connect to any combination of copper, PEX, CPVC, or PE-RT pipes Same size fitting as pipe size. 3/4 inch fitting for 3/4 inch pipe. If the pipe isn't one of the ones listed in description (above list) then it will not work. There are other sharkbite fittings that can be used to join different type pipes. For instance will not work on PVC (which isn't CPVC).

how far away from the wall do copper pipes need to be to use couplings?

Asked by gogo September 28, 2020

Answers

If you can pull the pipe away from the wall 1/4 to 1/2 inch, you should be able to use the Sharkbite coupler. You would also need to be able to slide the copper pipe enough to insert it into the coupler. Most of the time, using a coupler to rejoin pipe is because a modification to the plumbing had to be made and the Sharkbite coupler is the quickest and easiest way to rejoin the pipe.

Will this work on galvanized pipe

Sharkbite fittings are not designed to be used on galvanized tubing. Galvanized pipe should be cut and rethreaded or replaced as a section between fittings. The mfg. does not reccomend use on galvanized in its product specs.

This doesn’t fit 3/4” copper pipe. What size do I need?

If RWC's answer about 5/8 size pipe is correct then you will need an adapter to get to correct size. 3/4 in. x 5/8 in. Copper Reducing Coupling would work if the copper pipe you have is really a 5/8 and not a 3/4 inch. You will also need a short piece of 3/4 inch copper pipe long enough for the shark bite fitting to go on and might need a 5/8 coupling (5/8 in. Straight Copper Coupling Fitting) to connect the adapter to the 5/8 inch pipe. Solder all the copper fittings and then use the shark bite coupler. If new to plumbing make sure you don't use lead based solder. Both of these couplings are Home depot items, I copied and paste the names so using same name in search should find those couplings. If you have a small scrap piece of the copper pipe you have you can use that to verify if pipe really is 5/8 inch and that the couplings will fit while at Home Depot before buying couplings and the short piece of 3/4 inch pipe.

Hello, When working with 1/2" SharkBite push-to-connect fittings such as part # U008LFA the pipe will need to be pushed .95" into each end of the fitting. This will leave you with a gap of approximately .1" between the pipes once they are installed into this particular fitting. If you have additional questions please don't hesitate to reach out to our technical support department at 877-700-4242. Best Regards,

Can this be used on a steel or galvanized pipe ?

Asked by mike June 10, 2020

Answer

Hello, Unfortunately, SharkBite fittings are not designed to be used with steel or galvanized pipe. SharkBite brass push-to-connect fittings are approved for use with the below types of pipe/tubing. You also do not want to mix dissimilar metals such as galvanized pipe and brass fittings because once water is introduced corrosion can occur. PEX (ASTM F876, CSA B137.5) Copper (ASTM B 88) CPVC (ASTM D 2846, CSA B137.6) PE-RT (ASTM F 2769) HDPE (SDR-9 ASTM D2737) Best regards,

Kitchen Remodel

The wife and I decided to do a kitchen remodel ourselves because we're crazy. Our Kitchen sink cabinet needed to be replaced because of an old leak from a faucet sprayer line. Our plumbing lines are PEX which at the time I thought they were PVC. Not knowing the difference between the two, I called my local plumber and showed him a picture of what I had and he explained to me that my lines were PEX. Anyway we took out the old lines and put new ones in using the Shark Bites. The old lines didn't have shark bites. they were press or shrink fitted and had to be completely cut out. Using the shark bites made the job EXTREMELY easier for me since I am a rookie plumber. During the remodel I had to connect, reconnect, disconnect again, reconnect again, multiple, multiple, multiple times. The shark bites made that process again so much easier to work with. I thought after disconnecting them so many times that they would for sure leak. NOPE!! On the last time I had to connect and reconnect the Shark Bites, one of the white pieces came out. I thought for sure that it would now leak. I put the white piece back in correctly and no issues what so EVER!! You definitely get your $$$ worth with the shark bites. All my connections are shark bites. Including the shut off valves. As you can imagine I highly, highly, recommend these for a plumbing issue, repair, or replacement of any kind.

I had a pinhole leak in a 90 deg elbow. I soldered together a new elbow and connected it to the existing tubing with a 3/4" coupling and a 3/4" repair coupling. I really like the fact that you can make the repair with no soldering - I did not want to use a torch in the tight area in my ceiling. It turns out that I had more play in the tubes than I thought so I could have used a regular coupling rather than a repair coupling on the vertical tube. God forbid that it happens again, but if it does, I'll get two regular couplings and a repair coupling and return the one I don't use. These are super products that I highly recommend for the DIY'er. Just follow the directions on deburring and cleaning the tubes so the O-ring isn't damaged and can make a good seal. Four years ago, I had a pinhole leak in a 1/2" straight section of copper tubing. I used the Sharkbite repair coupling. Again, fairly easy to use and still holding strong with no issues.

Hello, we apologize for the issue you are having with the 1/2 in. SharkBite Coupling. The main reason for failure is not pushing the fitting to the full insertion depth. The insertion depth for a 1/2 in. SharkBite fitting is 15/16 in. We recommend marking this insertion depth on the pipe before installation to ensure a complete seal. We would be happy to learn more about the issue you are experiencing and help with a solution. Please reach out to our Customer Service Team at 1-877-700-4242 so we can assist. SharkBiteCashAcme

While Sharkbite fittings are generally a bit pricey they are priceless when you need them. Great for emergency repairs or if you want an easy connection with minimal tools between plastic pipes and/or copper. I try to keep a few around as a just in case solution to the unexpected. Although they can be used for a permanent connection, I typically use them regularly in renovations as a temporary bridge between old copper and new pex without interrupting service to the home for extended periods of time. You can reuse them, and if you are going to so I would recommend getting "Push-to-Connect Disconnect Clip" in a given size. They're cheap and do the job of removing the fittings without damaging them.
