Questions & Answers

What color is this? Dark brown, medium brown, black?

Asked by: curious
The product stocked under this code by Shaw is a smooth fine-grain dark walnut brown. On the current Home Depot listing it is nothing like the first picture, a scraped finish with a cool gray tone. It does matches the third picture.

Does this require a underlayment

Asked by: MICHEAL
For a second story or higher floor, you might consider a sound reducing material, like foam or waxed paper, to prevent squeaking and reduce noisy footfalls. If it’s a first floor, I’d strongly recommend a moisture barrier. There a foam types that also serve to reduce moisture getting under the floor.

Appling Caramel 3/8 in. Thick x 5 in. Wide x Varying Length Engineered Hardwood Flooring (23.66 sq. ft. / case) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great price for the quality of this flooring. The top photo in this listing is an exact match for... Great price for the quality of this flooring. The top photo in this listing is an exact match for the flooring color as you look across a wide expanse of the floor. When looking straight down at the floor is looks much more like the bottom photo, slightly less deep/dark. Overall, it is a medium dark chocolate brown with maybe a very very slight tinge of grey. No complaints here. I liked the fact that the vast majority of planks were full size planks with some boxes having slightly shorter planks. It made installing 650 sqf. on a concrete stab faster. The flooring fit together perfectly with little effort or glue, using a professional tapping block and rubber mallet. I have to tell you, I was very pleased with this product. It went down easy, was straight, with only 1 or 2 planks out of hundreds of planks that were slightly warped. Far exceeded my expectations. I was really surprised when I left several cut pieces (scrap) outside on a work table over 2-3 days when it rained and the water didn't cause the pieces to warp, delaminate, swell or bleed their color. That was impressive. I'm not expecting to get that much water on the floor but it was nice to see it preform that well when exposed to that much water/dampness.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the hardwood floors you will love in your home This flooring sounded too good to be true, considering the price. We were looking for rustic, nail down flooring in 5 inch width. As advertised, this flooring is nail down, float or glue. In reality, it is too thin to nail down. It would work well for a small budget and is one step up from pergo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feels great, looks even better! Because of it's depth, I was worried it would feel like a laminate - It DOES NOT! The engineered hardwood feels like a hardwood floor, looks beautiful and went in fairly easily (says the contractor). So happy with my Shaw floor.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from so far so good The finish is very matte, which is what we wanted. The micro bevels are pretty non-existent. The floor looks almost completely smooth. There is a bit of texture due to the grain. It looks great. I might recommend it to others, but there are some caveats... Here's what I have to say about Shaw in general: 1.They did back up their warranty on a different engineered hardwood when it was found to be defective... That line is now discontinued. It took about a year of negotiating, but it was ultimately done, with a lot of help from the HD claims department. 2. Their engineered hardwood is not solid wood. It has fiber board as one of the three layers. It is also kind of thin. 3. This is not click lock flooring. If you decide to float it, you have to glue EVERY seam while laying it down. We did this on the first round and glued the entire floor down instead of floating the second time. If you don't get the boards just right with floating, you risk the seams splitting. Gluing the entire floor to cement is much easier than floating, but is best done by a professional. Gluing is somewhat more expensive because the adhesive is pricey and they charge more for the installation because it can be a sticky mess. 4. This finish looks like wood. I have seen engineered hardwood not look like wood. 5. Before you buy, consider other brands where all layers are wood. I think Bruce has flooring in this price range that is 5-ply real wood all the way through, but I have no idea how the finish looks.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Description is misleading Since there is no sample available (seriously?), I ordered a box of these to check the quality and here is what I learned. The description states that is is 3-ply engineered hardwood, which I assumed meant plywood since all the other HDF/MDF floor products from other manufacturers say so in the description. This is not the case.. It is in fact HDF core which I did not want. secondly, of the 6 pieces I pulled out of the box, 2 of them had smudges in the finish that looked like someone smeared their thumb over the stain before sealing with finish coating. I promptly returned them and instead went with the teak huntington 1/2" engineered from home legend. A little bit more expensive, but in my opinion worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful flooring and prefect for the Ceiling! We decided to convert our 3 season porch to a 4 season. We designed it ourselves. We gutted the room, added insulation, vapor barrier, heat, new floors, ceiling, sheetrock, wood trim and, backboard, wall stone tile and mortar. We embedded a mirror to give added depth the the room. The room draws compliments all the time. All materials purchased @ Home Depot. Some before and after pics

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great floor This floor is really beautiful. I've had it for 1 year and it still looks like brand new. I love the pattern of the wood. The color is just right, not too dark, not too light. It doesn't show dust. Cleaning is so easy. I'm very happy with this floor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good choice! Beautiful coffee colored hickory flooring. Was looking for a darker wood than what is typically sold in local stores. Ordered online and shipped to home. Product was well packaged. Installed as a floating floor in a home office using tongue and groove glue and cork underlayment which was available at our local Home Depot. New floor looks great! Note: There is a similar "click and lock" version of this product also available so be sure to select the correct product depending upon the type needed. We chose the standard tongue and groove (glue) product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not grey This "winter grey" looks grey in the online pictures. My store did not have samples. When it arrived my contractor called me to the site before they unloaded, as it was not grey at all. It was a very dark brown. With several sets of eyes, we did not see any grey to it. I was able to return it for a refund but this was an inconvenience and I had to start all over in a flooring hunt.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So much better than the pictures The reason that I gave the overall rating only average is because of the variation in the size of the random lengths. We covered about 600 square feet with this flooring on a cement slab. Each box had such different sized small lengths that we ended up using the longest boards and cutting so that it would look more uniform. If we hadn't it wouldn't have looked as good. Other than that, each piece connected well together with no glue.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not happy The description of your product states random lengths. The pces were all the same size which add extra day of labor between layout and all the extra cutting
