Questions & Answers

Can i use this to sheet a roof

Roof
Asked by: Daniel
My house was roofed with this 15/32" plywood in 1981. I've heard that it's still "code" for roofing. When I walk on my roof it seems OK as far as able to support my weight, but I'm only 130#. I've seen a few places that seem to be sagging a little between the 2' spaced rafters. I was hoping to find a good CDX plywood with a sliver more thickness just for a little overkill. That's why your question caught my eye.

Does this plywood have a rating such as "CDX" or other rating? What is the "ply"? such as 4 ply, 5 ply, etc. Plywood I've looked at from other stores are described as e.g. 1/2", 4' x 8' CDX, 4 or 5 ply.
Asked by: homedepotcustomer
I have worked for over 35yrs in the lumber business and worked for GP a manufacturer of products similar to this. CDX means it is a "C" face Grade and a "D" grade veneer for the back. The X just means that the inner ply's meet the minimum grade for voids, # of knots and size ETC and a exterior glue is used. Be aware this grade is for exterior use but not exposed ! People who leave this product exposed and just painted then complain when it falls apart shouldn't complain. You have to go to a minimum CCX and even then it shouldn't be direct exposure to the outside. As for the glue all of it is Exterior glue. The mills run millions of sq ft of plywood and they can't afford to stop the production line to change out the glue.

Is it 5ply???
Asked by: 1gearrider
Hi the number of plys will vary by manufacturer and you would have to contact your local home depot to see what they carry of that in stock. Or if not if they may be able to special order it, as not all products are available at all stores. and the selection of what they carry is also determined by location and availability. So it is what your local home depot's distributor carries that determines what is available.

HD is not selling CDX, but this instead. At least in this store, they no longer have an exterior rated plywood. This is rated "exposure 1". It should take some short term moisture. It is just a very cr---y excuse for plywood. I carried mine home in my pick-up in a very light mist. The plywood was not soaked but was barely damp on one side. I unloaded it into a dry shop. By morning, The plywood was dry but every piece of the cr-p had de-laminated and swelled. The glue is either inferior barely there. Good thing that I did not use it. I will not waste my money again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from oops. bad instore cuts. replacement? The cuts of the plywood were done wrong by your associates af your saw. Should have been 24 inches was actually 23.5 so half of cut plywood is unusable. Two of four sheets need replacement. Can you do that exchange? Ill cut them myself this time. Thanks!

They were not made to “industry standard” .We were under a time restraint and the job location was 65 miles from the store. The CS rep did give us a satisfactory credit. Sheets are overpriced by 20%!!!
