Hi Vick I would recommend using a patch to cover the hole first the using the compound.

What is the drying time for sheet rock easy sand

Asked by: kensteel
Setting time depends mostly on temperature of the air, temperature of the water you add, and how long you mix it and how fast. You can adjust the setting time based on these things (use hot water if you want it to set faster, use cold water if you want it to set slower.) Drying time is about the same as regular premixed joint compound, and depends on temperature of the air, humidity, and how much air is blowing. As you can imagine, if you have a small patch to do, you can speed up drying by applying a hair dryer over the patch. Thick coats such as the first embedding coat of paper tape takes the longest - allow up to 24 hours. In cool, damp weather, such as an unheated house or a garage, might take even longer. The final, thin coat could take as little as an hour to dry.

How about cleanup
Asked by: Cookie
Clean up is easy and fast as long as you don't let the product dry your tools. Sanding is fast but dusty. Great finish with a fine sanding block.

Customer Reviews

18 lbs. Easy Sand 45 Lightweight Setting-Type Joint Compound is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 157.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'll never used pre-mixed again I'm a professional contractor and started doing a lot of drywall work lately. The first time I used this in my own house I wasn't that thrilled with it. But I recently used it for some sheetrock repairs for a customer. Once I got the hang of the proper consistency, I couldn't be happier with it. Yes, it is harder to sand than pre-mixed, but that's ok because it prevents you from over-sanding. Once I got going with it, I could put down this stuff so smooth (and without bubbles!) that you could almost get away without sanding. All I needed was a light sanding and it looked flawless. I have to say that I've done a fair amount of drywall work so I have much practice. If you're a beginner, you may tend to find it a little difficult to work with. But believe me, practice and you'll think this is the best product. I'll gladly pay a little more for less product (as opposed to pre-mixed) because this product has such awesome characteristics.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from sets faster than advertised We used this for filling in a 4x4' area where we removed a cupboard, leaving a deep gap in the ceiling finish work, as we have wires embedded in the ceiling for electric heat. This fast-set mud clung well, and set quickly enough that we didn't have to worry about it sagging and falling off. The setting interval must be a maximum. We mixed with cold water, and the deadline still snuck up on us early. It may as well ring a bell or start buzzing. When the deadline hits, you sem to have about 60-90 seconds in which you watch the consistency go from "starting to stiffen" to "crumbling and useless." We didn't dare use it for the finish coat for fear of it going bad as we were troweling it. Keep the bucket close to your work - you cannot afford the extra time to walk to it. There were several lumps we found in mixing the powder which would not dissolve. The bag must have gotten wet before we bought it, so we had to dig those out before starting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than premix- especially for paint prep. This stuff is great for two reasons. You can make up as much or little as you want and you can make it to your preferred consistency. When I'm filling large gaps, I mix it thick; when skim coating, I mix it thin. Be careful. When mixing an amount to fill the bottom of a mud pan, the difference between too dry and too wet is about a tablespoon of water. With a bit of practice, you'll get it right. It lays on so smooth that I rarely sand. I just lay on 3 or 4 thin coats and run a damp sponge over it after it's totally dry. They make this in a 20 minute version, but I find this works best for me. The 20 sets up quickly, so unless you are really fast, it sets up in the pan. Oh, it's also more durable. I've used it like spackle to fill small holes in wood. Not it's intended purpose, but it works. I'm sure there is an expiration, but I've kept bags in my garage for years and haven't had an issue. Probably would be a good idea to not put it on the floor so it doesn't soak up water. I think the only time I'd ever use premix is if I need a full bucket. Still, I think I'd rather use this.

This stuff dries hard, it's like trying to sand a limestone cliff. I had to break out the rotary sander to feather a few of my high spots. Also, you do not have anywhere near 45 minutes of working time. The compound starts to kick after about 20 minutes and stiffens steadily after that. Bottom line: If you are like me and you sometimes leave ridges, divots, and liftoffs in your drywall don't go near these these setting compounds; I recommend the premixed Dust Control. Much easier to work with.

IDK this stuff, in the desert.. not even really hot yet.. it set in 20 minutes inside a bucket and was hard as a rock, it had set solid not just on top.. I added water but it was to late i was breaking it apart but it had set too hard in that 20 minutes. I was skim coating so I had to throw everything away pan and all
