Questions & Answers

Can ultra light be used on a ceiling?

Asked by: usgtest
I personally strongly advise against it. I used broad drywall anchors, they tore straight thru. Wouldn’t hold a towel rack. I didn’t see how they they will hold their own weight in a ceiling application.

can this b used in bathroom? is it like blue board? moisture and mold resistant?

Asked by: DIYer_hodgepodgelodge.dottie
Use green (or blue) board for walls. Use regular (this stuff) for the ceiling. Green board on the ceiling traps moisture and will be problematic.

how many pieces do I need for a 10x10 room
Asked by: stormy
I will assume that the room has 8' high walls. OK? With the sheetrock panels vertical, you will need 2 1/2 panels per wall. That makes 10 for walls. For the ceiling you need 2 1/2 panels wide and 2' x 10' that takes 3 and a piece cut from the door opening. Total 13 4'X8' panels.

UltraLight 1/2 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. Gypsum Board is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1871.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from too much of a compromise. I renovated my entire house with 5/8 sheetrock and although it harder to work with with its worth it .when it was time to renovate my basement I decided to go with 1/2 inch sheet rock however home depot only carried the ultra light so I gave it a shot since i was tired of carrying the 5/8 .well i regret it. the 1/8 of an inch makes a big difference in sturdiness. This ultra light is garbage and a huge company like USG should be ashamed for putting out such an inferior product.this sheetrock crumbles as soon as you try to screw it in.in fact it crumbles as your cutting it. home depot should at least stock the standard sheetrock and not force these on its customers by only stocking ultralight. It is easy to work with and very light but in the end its not worth the strength you lose.

Having hung drywall for various repair/remodel efforts over the years, I'm glad to see this lighter version becoming commonplace. One caution I would have is that, as this lighter drywall is less dense, the screws can pull through the material easier. So, when "sucking" the drywall to the studs over an area that isn't perfectly flat, be careful in driving the screws so that the screw head doesn't pull through. Additional screws may be needed, too, to be safe with these trickier spots.

I will add that I finished with an extra full piece and no room in my garbage so I left it leaning against my garage where it was rained on several times and dried out in between storms. I was cutting it up for disposal and noticed that it still looked usable and I was impressed by that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality material at a great price! This drywall is very easy to work with and is very lightweight. One thing I appreciated about this drywall was the paper. Given a good knife, the paper cut easily and didn’t tend to tear. In fact, I really only had to score it before snapping my cut. I also used a couple of different saws on this material with very good results. My keyhole saw works great for manual cutting, and my dremel saw can be set to cut very precisely because the consistency of dimension is perfect every time. This material was easily lightweight enough for me to maneuver by myself. I could actually pick up two sheets with ease and move them around my shop. For the price, this is a great buy. I highly recommend this drywall for all size construction projects. Home Depot is very competitive on price and this is a quality material that is easy to work with.

Works great, screws also purchased were able to penetrate and not run to deep as long as I kept out of the trigger. It cut with normal handsaw and scored with a sharp razor knife didn't even need my rasp. The only way I see this product being better is by throwing some free labor to hang and finish

I can't think of any reason not to use the product. It's as durable as can be expected for dry wall. This was our first time doing a project of this size and there were no issues at all. We did four walls and boxed out the support beam in the basement renovation.

USG has gone from “first” in the industry to “worst” in the industry ! because of this light weight drywall. The white side of the paper is super poor quality- /peels easily -when rubbed together with another sheet. The core is super Briittle it fractures like glass. used to swear by USG products

We have reached the point in trying to reduce the weight of drywall that it is nothing more than air bubbles wrapped in paper. This stuff is just to hard to work with. Screwing it take great care, corners are too fragile and cuts will crumble under a utility knife. We won't be buying this again.
