Questions & Answers

Textured Walls?

Does this work well with textured (spray-on) walls? Given the low price may just buy it and try it.
Asked by: Jim
Just finished painting a bedroom...didn't put blue tape anywhere...just used the paint edger around the baseboards, ceiling, entrance door, closet door, and windows. This thing works brilliantly once you get the hang of it, and it's not as as slow to use as some videos make it seem. This is far faster and more effective than taping off everything. Some tips...lightly set the pad on the surface of pain in a paint tray... don't get paint on anything but the pas of the tool. Keep the black edge guides up while loading. When you place it flat against the wall, start about two inches away from the edge (baseboard, etc.) and move the pad toward the edge. Right before you get to the edge, lower the black edge guide, then draw it along the wall using even, moderate pressure. Reload and repeat. Be sure to keep those black edge guides clean, including underneath. Great product!!!

Is it better to apply paint with brush than dunking it in the tray, Most people say you make a mess dunking it?
Asked by: Mike
Yes, you must apply the paint with a brush, and make sure you don't get paint too close to the front edge of the paid (where the wheels are). Otherwise, overloading the front edge will result in paint spilling over the front side, getting on the wheels, and eventually getting paint where you don't want it.

I notice that the edger can pivot. Is there a way to prevent that by "locking" it in place? My crown molding is not high enough to effectively use the wheel guides.
Asked by: Nate
Found no way to lock the swivel, which made it difficult here to use, nothing on on product directions. Had the older one that does not swivel that worked better actually.

how thick does the trim need to be for the wheels to stay along the trim?

Asked by: KURat06
about 3 mm minimum don't apply too much pressure you'll dirty the wheels and transfer the paint to the trim. Alternately go conservative on paint and lift the wheels up. Have a clean wet sponge near at all times.

4.75 in. x 3.75 in. Edger Pro is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 460.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wish I bought this sooner! I had already painted the bedroom and dinning room at out new house when i bought this. I had it for the painting of the living room and spare bedroom. What a life saver around baseboards and windows! As long as you remember to put the load/paint switch in the load position when dipping it in your paint, be sure to wipe of the excess paint on the edge of your paint tray, and ensure the wheels are facing toward the baseboard or window seal it will work EVERY time! I didn't even need to tape off my baseboards or windows! You may have to go back and forth a few times but it typically has enough paint to cover. You can see the great straight line under the window and above the vent in the picture i included! I still preferred to cut in free hand at ceilings and corners, though this worked for that to it splattered little droplets on the ceiling and neighboring wall (i think this was because the walls were textured and the corners more rounded then on perfectly flat walls)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Straight line I am a pro painter. Pros: I save alot of time using this edger, thing that I learn from using it. Buy your self a smaller size paint tray so you can easily carry it around. Just dip the front half of the edger into your paint tray, just enough paint, gently wipe off excessed paint on the grits on your paint tray like you do when using a paint brush. Rolling it slow so the plastic wheels don’t put the black marks on the other edge. Slide the edger away from the edge to smooth out excessed paint, like when using a paint brush. Cons: it is a bit challenge when using this edger with a pole attach, it could make a mess, with the long pole attached, you can’t really tell how much paint you just dip from your paint tray. I walk on a pair of Stilts so I dont have to use the pole. Use a step ladder if you can’t walk the stilts! Have fun painting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best money I have ever spent! This product works great, all you have to do is review the comments and follow them. In my experience I do not overload the pad, loading straight from my paint tray and only use in one direction making sure not to back track. You need to watch the hard line the back edge will leave so I suggest you do one wall at a time and either back brush your lower hard line or use the edger to blend down into the wall. As long as you roll the wall while the blend is still wet you have a great blend. It is also very important to wipe the edger arms after every line you cut as paint will build up and transfer...make sure to check the wheels too. All in all, I don't cut lines anymore this product works great and will save you a great deal of time. I clean the pad and can usually reuse it 3-5 times before disposing of it...after a couple of cleaning's the bristle's become softer and the application and coverage is more even. Available in store regularly and the refill pads are always stocked.

The one that you held with your fingers. This is TO wiggly. It is impossible to cut a straight line. The design makes it nearly impossible to not to goop paint on to the wheels. Also drips off the bottom. Fortunately I found my old one. It worked like a champ. This version-- it faster and more accurate to use a brush. If I could rate it zero stars, I would.

It does not attach to the extender pole securely, it does not angle horizontal and it flops around. Unable to use. The older model, with our the side removal tabs is so much better. You have more adjustments and it will stay in position. DO NOT BUY THIS. Six dollars down the drain and repainting the areas I used it. Thank goodness I saved the old one.

I was originally dubious about this tool, however having used a similar type pad on our deck and liking it a lot, I decided to try it. The Home Depot worker admonished me to check the edge and wheels before each use to be sure they are clean of paint. It took a little trial and error to learn to load it *enough* but not *too much*, and to get used to the swivel head. The edger is tricker to use on shallow trim, but that was at baseboard level, so I held the sides instead of the swivel head for better control there. The true test was edging at the ceiling in a stairwell. For 10 years I was dreading trying to figure out a ladder configuration to get up there, but with this tool I just needed an extension pole. I was extra careful loading and wiping the edge and wheels in this area, and had no trouble getting a nice edge from the safety of the floor. Oh, I also had no trouble getting the corners done, I did not need the corner specific version of this tool. I'm actually looking forward to painting the cathedral ceiling portions of our home now, and wish I had painted years ago!!

The pad starts falling apart with in 10 minutes. The pad edges unravels leaving fluff and string in the paint. I found countless fluff balls in the paint making for extra work to get the it all out. I bought 2 extra pads and all of them unraveled. One of the pads kept coming off the edger and falling on the floor and hitting the baseboard making a huge mess. No matter how hard I tried to keep the edge clean on the tool, it would get paint on the edge I didn't want paint on. I followed the directions and practiced on an area to get the technique down but I couldn't do it consistently.
