Questions & Answers

Textured Walls?

Does this work well with textured (spray-on) walls? Given the low price may just buy it and try it.
Asked by: Jim
Just finished painting a bedroom...didn't put blue tape anywhere...just used the paint edger around the baseboards, ceiling, entrance door, closet door, and windows. This thing works brilliantly once you get the hang of it, and it's not as as slow to use as some videos make it seem. This is far faster and more effective than taping off everything. Some tips...lightly set the pad on the surface of pain in a paint tray... don't get paint on anything but the pas of the tool. Keep the black edge guides up while loading. When you place it flat against the wall, start about two inches away from the edge (baseboard, etc.) and move the pad toward the edge. Right before you get to the edge, lower the black edge guide, then draw it along the wall using even, moderate pressure. Reload and repeat. Be sure to keep those black edge guides clean, including underneath. Great product!!!

Is it better to apply paint with brush than dunking it in the tray, Most people say you make a mess dunking it?
Asked by: Mike
Yes, you must apply the paint with a brush, and make sure you don't get paint too close to the front edge of the paid (where the wheels are). Otherwise, overloading the front edge will result in paint spilling over the front side, getting on the wheels, and eventually getting paint where you don't want it.

I'm having trouble on base boards because edge is so small and wheels won't roll along. Keeps slipping off. Suggestions?

How do you load paint edger with paint

Asked by: Greg
Hello Greg! In order to assist we made a short video tutorial that you can find located here: https://vimeo.com/218705690 We've also heard from customers who have found it helpful to load the edger using a paint-brush so that they don't accidentally dip too deep. I've found that once you have the pad initially "loaded/saturated" with paint it takes less time to reload. The key is to not dip so deep that you get paint on the wheels and to ensure that you wipe off excess before applying to the wall. I hope the video helps!

I am pretty good cutting in the ceiling lines after 40 yrs of practice, but this is perfection. To use this item, so that paint does not get on to the two rollers and thus the ceiling, I rolled some paint onto the ribs of my tray with my roller and then dipped the applicator into the paint and then onto the wall. One long swipe with this gadget one way and then back again, and all is covered and I have a perfect straight line. Just be sure to either immediately start your rolling onto the wall, or feather out the outer edged of the swipe of paint so you don't get a tiny ridge caused by drying paint.

I used this at the end of a long extension pole to do the cut-in on our 17'-high entryway walls. It worked beautifully! Very clean edge at the ceiling line and not a single bleedover. I did not dip the pad into paint, I used a brush to load the pad -- you can control how much goes near the edge of the pad that way, and I got better results. Also be sure to clean the guard and wheels every time you load it. I used very short little strokes, and you have to get the angle of the extension pole right to get it flat on the wall. I only had to go up the ladder a couple times in the corners to finish by hand, but I did the vast majority from the ground, which was a major bonus. Where has this thing been all my life?

When tilted, drips paint all over everything. Leaves paint lines and unpainted areas. Edger handle threads do not fit standard painting pole. Instructions on edger and pad say to be sure to load pad with pad notches towards the top of Edger, put there are no notches on pad. Pad keeps sliding on Edger while painting. Edger leaves thick paint line farthest from edge which is impossible to roll out. Avoid. I do not know what professionals use for edging, but it is surely NOT Shur-Line products. Very disappointed.

It was supposed to come with a shaped pad, mine was rectangular. At the base of the edger where you can attach a pole is two long openings. When you load the edger, paint goes up into these holes and then drips down everywhere. See photo for problem.

I was originally dubious about this tool, however having used a similar type pad on our deck and liking it a lot, I decided to try it. The Home Depot worker admonished me to check the edge and wheels before each use to be sure they are clean of paint. It took a little trial and error to learn to load it *enough* but not *too much*, and to get used to the swivel head. The edger is tricker to use on shallow trim, but that was at baseboard level, so I held the sides instead of the swivel head for better control there. The true test was edging at the ceiling in a stairwell. For 10 years I was dreading trying to figure out a ladder configuration to get up there, but with this tool I just needed an extension pole. I was extra careful loading and wiping the edge and wheels in this area, and had no trouble getting a nice edge from the safety of the floor. Oh, I also had no trouble getting the corners done, I did not need the corner specific version of this tool. I'm actually looking forward to painting the cathedral ceiling portions of our home now, and wish I had painted years ago!!

There's a line at the ceiling, one at the baseboard, all around every window, and at the built-ins. You could tape around them and use a brush but that will take a lot of time and tape. So you see this gadget, the Shur-Line Edger, and you are saved! A short-cut to perfection But every time you load it with paint, the paint gets on the rollers and the guides. So you use less paint, but then you don't get coverage. Soon there's paint on the ceiling, paint on the baseboard, and not a clean line in sight. So you throw it into the trash, where it was always destined to be, and you start again, using tape and a brush. You are humbled, and you are out $5 and some time. When will you learn? WHEN?
